Frank Haith Gets It (Updated with Video)

In case you missed it, Miami coach Frank Haith was ejected from this evening’s basketball game at Carolina following a 10 second sequence of no less than 3 bad (if not flagrantly) missed calls. It was nice to see a coach stand up for his team and declare that he was not going to turn the other cheek to the corrupt officiating that has infested our once great conference.

Thanks to the N&O for this blog entry. They have turned our attention to the following YouTube video from last night. We TOLD YOU that the ACC is going to hate the internets!! Folks, this is only the beginning of a revolution.

In the span of 28 seconds, this is what Karl Hess, Michael Kitts and Bob Donato missed:

• A goaltending on Brandan Wright
• A push on Tyler Hansbrough
• A dead ball call
• An insult-to-injury three-point play after the missed dead ball call
• A no-call on Hansbrough and defending Brian Asbury

Now, even with every call, Haith wasn’t going to win this game. Heck, Ol’ Roy, Psycho T and the three freshmen could all get bounced and Miami wasn’t going to win. That’s not the point.

There should be more consistency by the officials, regardless of location and regardless of which coach is on the sidelines. Clearly, that’s not the case here.

“There should be more consistency by the officials”

They are. They are consistently bad. At least when the Pac-10 had the ref issues in football this past year, they had the guts to suspend the crew.

Herb would have stamped his foot very hard.

  3. choppack1 02/01/2007 at 3:35 PM #

Yep Beo – that’s one thing I like about Sidney – he’s giving it to the officials. We saw what proceeding the gentlmanly route got Herb.

I actually saw him get tee’d up for having the audicity to yell at the ref:
    “What’s the difference?”

He didn’t even curse..It was unreal what little respect he was given. I know he did the complaining by the book. However, as Coach K demonstrated, it’s not enough to send tapes to the league office. COACHES FROM SCHOOLS NOT NAMED DUKE AND UNC NEED TO COMPLAIN IN THEIR PRESS CONFERENCES AND PUBLICLY QUESTION BOTH THE INTEGRITY OF THE OFFICIALS AND THE LEAGUE.

    wow that was really bad.

you know the officiating is pretty bad when the blog for the N&O (a paper with an OBVIOUS and long-standing history of pro-UNC bias) criticizes the officiating of ACC refs in defense of Frank Haith with respect to a UNC – Miami game. The real message the N&O/Ram’s Club Cheerleader rag is sending?

“Don’t be so damned obvious we boys in blue paid you fellers off. Everybody else is catching a whiff of the fix. Save the preferential treatment for those close games…”

  6. gopack968 02/01/2007 at 5:31 PM #

Between this and the Clemson-Duke game it would be impossible for the N&O to ignore the issue completely.

Now the ACC head office is a different issue…

“but the continuation shows him taking the guy down with his forearm. ”

Fair enough shell. I think a blocked shot thats clean, followed by contact with the arms (as opposed to the torso) are often let go, but your point is valid.

I will say, if wuffies can watch Tyler with somewhat unbiased eyes (after Sat of course), you’ll observe that he takes an absolute beating inside. Yeah, he gets away with some pushing and the occasional walk, but he gets it back in spades.

… I’m a big State fan for over 30 years, but I respect Carolina B-Ball and what Coach K has achievedv at Duke. Coach K took on Dean and Jimmy V was getting the best of him. By the time V left and Dean retire Coach K was the man. I believe Sidney will get us back where we are competing for ACC Championships and with opportunities to get to the Final 4. I pull for the ACC and I admire the programs at Duke and UNC. Jealously is not a virtue.

You can leave the insults out and still make your point. See? — SFN

Speaking of coaches that were discussed during our coaching search…

Anyone see that Bob Knight gave Rick Barnes his note cards from New Mexico game where he surpassed Dean in appreciation for Barnes’s nice comments about Knight when he broke the record.

I guarantee no coach appreciates Knight passing Dean’s record more than Barnes. 🙂

I left your point in; I took out your gratuitous insults of the entire community.

You’re right about the F-words, but I don’t see them here.

    It’s not personal.

I always love the inevitable person that chimes in with his frustration over folks complaining about the refs “again?!?” … as if hearing/seeing folks complain over and over again is worse than having to put up with piss-poor officiating over and over again.

Statefans is right. The Internet, and specifically youtube, is the ACC’s worst nightmare.

^and thank god for that. it really is gonna force the ACC to hold their refs more accountable. but unfortunatly for DaPacker he might have to hear some bitching and F-bombs in the process. sorry buddy. take one for the team.

All I can say to Frank Haith is…..WELCOME TO THE ACC!!

“If you ain’t wearin’ blue…you’re gonna get screwed!”

  14. DaPackster 02/01/2007 at 7:52 PM #

so much for the 1st amendment rights, I guess I have to be a yes boy and a whiner to get my comments printed. What is wrong with calling Fergie Opie or ronald mcdonald. Are we being a little sensitive. I forgot we live in the United States of the Offended.

  15. gumbydammit 02/01/2007 at 7:55 PM #

The sad part is, that they had the audacity to eject Haith for calling them out on their incompetence. Whatever he did was far less objectionable than their own officiating. By all rights, the officiating crew should have ejected themselves.

I guess this will be “handled internally” as well. The bonus checks just keep on comin’….

  16. PurplePeopleEaters 02/01/2007 at 8:10 PM #

The most annoying part is the UNC fans going crazy when blatantly bad calls are going on all around them.

  17. beowolf 02/01/2007 at 8:22 PM #

DaPackster, if you can show me where in the First Amendment it gives you the right to speak freely on someone else’s private forum, I’ll gladly leave.

Grow up, seriously. Or buy your own site and call people whatever you want.

    Hansbrough takes a beating???

Hansbrough forces contact by bulling into defenders every time he touches the ball. It is literally impossible to play defense against him because the refs don’t call offensive fouls on him when he is forcing contact with defenders standing straight up.

  19. PackGirl 02/01/2007 at 8:53 PM #

This recent rash of biased officiating might actually be a good thing. I know for a fact there were some “inquiries” about the officiating at the State-Duke game. Now with the even more blatant problems at Duke-Clemson and UNC-Miami, maybe things will come to a head and some action will be taken. Let’s hope…

  20. choppack1 02/01/2007 at 9:20 PM #

PackGirl – that would be nice – but nothing will change until these refs are publicly called out – ala what Coach K did to Deano in the 80s.

The coaches and/or ADs are just going to have suck it up and pay the fine. Behind the scenes protests and escalations don’t work w/ ACC officials and Swofford. Public humiliation is the only way to get results.

I’m watching this Duke game and I can’t help but wonder – why have this sideline analysis….Doris whatever her name is is talking about Duke’s 1 and 1/2 defenders. When Singletary drives by Duke’s 1.5 defenders – she states that good offense is better than good D or something stupid like that. What she neglects to mention is that the half defender was responsible for Reynolds – and he had to chose to either stop the drive or defend Reynolds. He actually makes the right decision, picking up Reynolds – and in theory, allowing Singletary to run into more help D…Give up 2 vs. 3 – not a bad decision.

  22. PurplePeopleEaters 02/01/2007 at 11:13 PM #

Haha just saw the best sign in the UVA Duke Game.

    “Sportscenter is Next…

    Unless Duke needs more time.”

    Ain’t that the truth.

  23. Lunatic Fringe 02/01/2007 at 11:34 PM #

^^^LOL…they did need some more time, but unfortuantly they did not get it. Good job UVA. 🙂

  24. PurplePeopleEaters 02/01/2007 at 11:56 PM #

Well duke did pretty much all they could on defense at the end. Singletary is just too good. How do you defend a guy who can still make a shot one handed on his ass with time running down… Great win UVA.

  25. Lunatic Fringe 02/02/2007 at 7:04 AM #

^^…in review of my previous statement that should be “fortunantly”. 🙂
