    Judging from the release date (9/28/06), and the discussion of Amato’s coaching history in the last few paragraphs I’d say this was his recruit. The article describes him as a fast, athletic linebacker, w/ somthing that presumably is related to football IQ (my words, not theirs). It reads he was a defensive MVP in 2005 on first glance.

    Looks like a good recruit, if TOB honors that offer (and the player opts to come w/ the coaching change). I’ll see if I can dust off my German/English dictionary and translate the bulk of it (I follow the gist, but my forte lies is in technical chemistry when it comes to German).

    He put together a highlight DVD and was shopping it around. Amato saw it and liked it. O’Brien apparently did too.

    He’s supposed to be really quick for his size. I think he’s about 6-4, 260, so he’ll probably play DE for us.

    Just curious. Since he is not mentioned on Rivals.com or Scouts.com – Are they new to the European market or is this just an oversight?

    I don’t think Rivals or Scouts even worries about the Canadian football market, and there’s always a couple of dozen decent players that come out of there.

    Amazing how much our recruiting changed with Amato this past year. We went from going after top guys and not taking early verbals to taking early verbals from sleeper/less heralded type of recruits.

    Fortunately, the previous staff seemed to do a good job with talent evaluations over the years, so hopefully that remains to be true with this class.

    A 4 star recruit that plays like a 2 star = A no star recruit that plays like a 2 star.

    A 4 star recruit that plays like a 2 star and makes stupid mistakes repeatedly and embarrasses our university with on and off the field antics

    A 4 star playing like a 2 star is playing below expectations. Likewise, a no star playing at a 2 star level is playing above expectations. Considering desire as important, I will go with the overachiever.

    For some reason I lost part of that last post…. it was supposed to read that that 4 star playing as a 2 star making repeatedly stupid mistakes is less than a no star playing as a 2 star.

    I can think of more recruits that didn’t live up to expectations under the last regime than those that overachieved.

    Assuming TOB wins at a rate similar to the success he had at BC…. recruiting will go nowhere but up. I think evidence exists to suggest that recruiting the last few years has been on the decline.

    I’m going off memory here.

    Recruits that I’d say overachieved (based on their star rankings…which I despise):

    Manny Lawson
    John McCargo
    Philip Rivers
    Marcus Hudson
    Oliver Hoyte
    Stephen Tulloch
    Sean Burton
    TJ Williams

    Those were all two and three star players who were not among the top 50 at their position coming out of high school. All of them played at least one year in the NFL, except for TJ Williams and I’d say he had a very nice college career.

    Recruits that were disappointments:
    Tramain Hall (I’m probably alone on this one)
    AJ Davis
    Derek Morris
    Marcus Stone
    Bobby Washington
    Octavius Darby
    That big tall skinny TE from Tampa who never played and ended up moving to WR only to never play

    These were all four or five star players. None of them were ever all-conference players. AJ Davis might get drafted and if he does, he’ll be the only one to do so. Tramain Hall had a couple of nice moments, but he was undersized and relatively slow. He was an average slot receiver for us who had a couple of decent moments. Far, far less than what he was advertised as coming out of high school and JUCO.

    I’m just hoping for a ‘hold it together’ 25-man class to complement some of the skill position talent that currently exists in the program. Hopefully we can then elevate the quality of our in the future from what the last two have produced.

    Just as a note, Markus Kuhn is on Rivals.com listed under NC State with video links no less – see below for that. He has some impressive stats, mainly his speed for a big man, which could very well net him a DE or ML position this coming season. He’ll probably need to drop a few pounds to play ML, unless he can prove his straight line 4.8 forty can translate into the east/west mobility needed to cover the gaps/pass coverage in the secondary in ACC play.

    Noah: Totally agree on T. Hall. He had a great sophmore or junior year, but then didn’t do a whole lot after Philip left. Philip leaving also killed Brian Clark’s production.

    Maybe you would have to put Clark in the overachieving category as well since he made the Broncos this year. TJ Williams did make the NFL, but ripped his knee last year.

    Is it not safe to add “any QB prospect recruited and signed since River’s arrival barring any future improvement on the part of the same?”

    What about Richard Washington? In fact, we’ve had way more busts at WR than we’ve had guys who played up to their promoted potential when they signed with us. Mind you I’m aware that QB issue mentioned above directly impacts the ability of the receiver to produce.

    We’ve got some guys that will be Seniors next year who unless they show me something next year, I would easily put them on the list of guys who haven’t lived up to their hype. I will not mention the specific names of current players, but I think many of our guys have plenty of room to improve their play.

    In that regard, maybe that’s exactly why I’m getting more and more excited about next year. (That’s tempered excitement as to not set myself up for disappointement mind you.) We’ll have growing pains for sure considering the coaching change, but I can’t wait to see what TOB can get out of some of the athletes Amato was able to lure to Raleigh. I’m really counting on seeing some guys “bust out” of whatever funk it is they’ve been hiding under for the last two seasons. We can only wait and see….

    Brian Clark goes in the category with guys like Garland Heath and Miguel Scott and Sterling Hicks…”Did exactly what we thought they’d do.”

    And then there are guys like Yomi Ojo and a few of Cary Godettes recruits that we can put in the category “Didn’t Do Exactly What We Thought They Wouldn’t Do.”

    You expected Brian Clark to make the NFL? He did show that talent as a freshman, but didn’t envision it prior to watching him play.

    What do you think of this year’s class so far?
