Leave it to Woody…

Sometimes we never get amazed at the audacity (and consistency) of some of our long-time rivals.

I can’t post too much of this because it is an INsider article and it is only fair to respect the integrity of such work. (But, ESPN’s INsider is well worth the money.) But, I will post just enough for you to get the gist of it with the tease. Does it really surprise you?

The first inclination that there was a forfeit on Bob Knight’s career record came from the voice of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Woody Durham pointed out last week that Knight has forfeits on his record and Dean Smith does not.

Durham said in an email that Smith was offered a forfeit after he closed his career by losing to Texas Tech in the 1996 NCAA Tournament in Richmond, a win that, according to Durham, would have put Smith at 880. But Durham said Smith said he declined to accept it, saying, “We didn’t win it on the court!”

Well, according to (Gary) Johnson (who handles NCAA statistics), this isn’t possible since “even if a coach doesn’t want them on the record, if the committee on infractions tells me to put them on there, then I have to put them on there.”

Good old Woody. Drinking the kool-aid and obviously emailing people about Saint Dean. (Has Smith really not been elevated to Holy Spirit status yet? I guess he has to die first.)

Don’t ever forget the kool-aid that the ultra-competitive Dean Smith didn’t care one bit about ultimately achieving the all-time wins record. That is why he just happened to retire the year that he broke the record having surpassed it by only three games. It was just a coincidence.

I wonder if any coach will ever get to 1000? THAT would be impressive!

He’s part of the Brokeback Hill organization… nothing more to be said

What would be better is if The General retired and found out later he was three wins shy of the record…and made a comeback. There, he’d be served heaping helpings of humble pie and become a more sanguine, mellower coach whereas before he’d just yelled.

Then at the end, he’d sacrifice his records for the good of the team. And henceforth be known as “Mr. 879.”

It would make a good movie.

    …but we’ve already seen it. Mr. 3000.

Woody sounds like my Penn State buddy: He discounts Bobby Bowden’s 31 wins at Samford. JoePa, in his book, leads by 28.

Well if there is reincarnation I want to come back as Woody!
Think about it. You fall in love with a college, go there, then spend the rest of your life running your mouth about it and getting paid for it!

Woody is just mad that Knight slighted the both Smith’s and his own achievement by calling it one of longevity and not one of ability.

    I agree though.

His perfect season is the better feat.

Pat Summit’s closing in on the 1000 mark. Could reach it by the end of the decade, if she decides to keep coaching.

    My favorite Woodyism….

“Carolina bursts threw the line for an unbelievable 3 yard gain, that kids got talent..wow, did you see that”

NC State tries to run the ball on the stout UNX defense but is crushed for just a 3 yard gain”

    what an idiot

  9. Heels Perspective 01/04/2007 at 8:13 PM #

My two favorite Woodyisms are :

1)The TAR HEELS …………….have won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!! (said it THREE times)

2)And the TAR HEELS will take the short trip back to Chapel Hill from Raleigh after disposing of the NC State Wolfpack (said it too many times to count)

That’s ok Hole Perspective (^). We don’t expect you to be able to count. Science & Math are not what you guys are good at over there on the hole…it gets in the way of theater design criticism, I guess.

I enjoy reading this site and I sometimes comment when the thread is about the Tar Heels. I’m not really sure why all you guys are wasting a thread on your site denigrating Dean Smith and Woody Durham. Dean hasn’t coached in 9 years.

Woody is a homer and is defending the former coach, so what! I’m sure that State Fan would be upset if Wally Ausley didn’t stand up for Sloan or Coach V????

  12. Woof Wolf 01/04/2007 at 9:09 PM #

So, you had to remind us that it’s been that long since we had a coach worth defending.

  13. Heels Perspective 01/04/2007 at 9:23 PM #

Most of Dean’s years were spent competing with Norm and Jimmy V. That was the point. AND worthy opponents they were!!!

SFN: Herb and Les coached longer than Valvano’s tenure and (I believe) right at Sloan’s tenure

  14. Woof Wolf 01/04/2007 at 9:34 PM #

We hope to be a worthy opponent again in a year or two.

I will give Woody credit for one thing. He was the keynote speaker at our local Chamber of Commerce banquet about 7 years ago and during his talk he said he is often asked who was the best basketball player he has had the pleasure of watching. His answer was 2 parts. The best overall basketball player he has seen was Michael Jordan, however he said the best college basketball player he had the pleasure of watching was David Thompson.

Woody is a total homer but he’s a pretty good announcer if he’s not doing a UNC game. They, like the State announcers, broadcast all the games of the ACC tournament and Woody is actually pretty tolerable if he doesnt have a dog in the hunt.
The worst announcer by far is Bob Harris over at Duke–he makes Woody look impartial by comparison. Plus, you don’t know what the heck is going on when Bob calls the game (score, fouls, time etc). Woody does OK with that. The worst thing about the UNC broadcasts isnt Woody, it’s Eric Montross!!
What a stick!! He has the personality of a box of rocks. God what a ZERO!! But you know the TarHoles –“gotta keep it in the fambly..”
……Whenever the Heels win, there is unbridled glee in the Trailer parks and WalMarts in the State……….

As far as Dean goes, of course he was a great coach.
However, almost ANYBODY could have won 2 titles with the enormous amount of talent he had for 20 plus years. In fact, they probably coulda won at least 2 NCAA titles by accident WITHOUT a head coach.
I don’t like Coach K at all. But if he would have been at UNC instead of Smith during that timespan, he would have almost as many titles as Wooden.
I think Jimmy V would have won at least 4 during that time.
Smith was a great coach, but an unbelievable underachiever. I cannot believe that UNC fans don’t feel this way. If I were a Heel I would be royally pissed at how few titles they have won with (sometimes) superior talent.
Also, if Fred Brown doesnt hand the ball to James Worthy and Chris Webber doesnt call timeout. Guess what? Dean would have 0 titles!

Agree with Glen – Woody is surprisingly good when announcing the OTHER ACCT games. I was stuck in the office one weekend, and could only pick up FM (re: UNC network) broadcasts. He was solid.

I actually DO hate it when our broadcasters are overly being “homers.”

I despised some of his tactics, mainly because they worked, but Dean was a great coach and innovative for the powder blue over there. The huge difference is that though Dean Smith may not have reached the ultimate goal as many times as some believe he should have, he did develop his entire roster year after year, and always had great players who went on to be very successful at the next level. Besides being in Chapel Hill all of those years, Dean Smith’s only fault may be one of over coaching great talent. I will give us Wolfpack fans the nod though, if there is a fan base anywhere, that should know about unreached potential, that would be us.

But all of that doesn’t mean I don’t absolutely love the fact that Bobby Knight eclipsed his record and yanked away one of the reasons for an already overly uppity bunch of Heels to stick their noses even further in the air. I’m thinking Dean’s thankful in a way though, it must have been quite a task holding that big ol’ honkin’ snoz of his that high in the air for all of this time anyway.

I can see Woody, probably Dean himself, and a big majority of the UNC faithful, out there over analyzing every aspect of Knight’s record in order to discount it in favor of Dean’s. While Bobby Knight is a great basketball coach, he is an ass too. There’s no trying to cover it up, he knows it, and he loves every minute of it. I’ll bet he just raised his own self to the Crown Prince of Assdom over there in the mind’s of most of Tar Heel faithful when he erased Dean’s illustrious milestone. I think that a very big statement was also made in the fact that the next in line to break the all time record, is one of Knight’s own proteges.

Does Lowe cuss? A LOT? Maybe there’s a class available somewhere.

Heel Perspective, Wally Ausley was the most objective sportscaster I’ve ever heard. Win, lose, or draw, it was just a game.

And you know what? He was a UNC CH grad!

  21. zahadum 01/05/2007 at 2:30 PM #

I know the Les years may have seemed endless SFN, but he did not coach longer than Valvano, and only about half as long as Sloan.

Stats are for losers as they say.

Case in point, Les Robinson had a better winning percentage against Dean Smith than Sloan, Valvano or Sendek.

In fact his 5-7 record against Dean is quite remarkable considering the Heels has an NCAA Championship and 2 Final Four appearances during that stretch. State had nothing more than a glorified Southern Conference roster at the time.

So, those who just want to beat UNC and don’t care about the other games should be singing Les’s praises and clamoring for his return.
