Leave it to Woody…

Sometimes we never get amazed at the audacity (and consistency) of some of our long-time rivals.

I can’t post too much of this because it is an INsider article and it is only fair to respect the integrity of such work. (But, ESPN’s INsider is well worth the money.) But, I will post just enough for you to get the gist of it with the tease. Does it really surprise you?

The first inclination that there was a forfeit on Bob Knight’s career record came from the voice of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Woody Durham pointed out last week that Knight has forfeits on his record and Dean Smith does not.

Durham said in an email that Smith was offered a forfeit after he closed his career by losing to Texas Tech in the 1996 NCAA Tournament in Richmond, a win that, according to Durham, would have put Smith at 880. But Durham said Smith said he declined to accept it, saying, “We didn’t win it on the court!”

Well, according to (Gary) Johnson (who handles NCAA statistics), this isn’t possible since “even if a coach doesn’t want them on the record, if the committee on infractions tells me to put them on there, then I have to put them on there.”

Good old Woody. Drinking the kool-aid and obviously emailing people about Saint Dean. (Has Smith really not been elevated to Holy Spirit status yet? I guess he has to die first.)

Don’t ever forget the kool-aid that the ultra-competitive Dean Smith didn’t care one bit about ultimately achieving the all-time wins record. That is why he just happened to retire the year that he broke the record having surpassed it by only three games. It was just a coincidence.

So like Dean – He was one of the more two-faced individuals you will ever find. He was smart enough and probably decent enough to be kind to every day folks when he met them. However, when Dean’s supremacy was challenged or when the way he thought things should be was challenged – especially by an outsider, he showed his fangs.

As much criticism as Knight rightly takes for picking on folks w/out reason – Dean did the same. He could be very petty – and this sounds just like him.

Dean and Woody are both hypocritical and whiny jerks. Peas in a pod.

Whatever, congrats to Knight, congrats to Smith, congrats to K when he does it. Its impressive; that is all.

I just wish Knight hadn’t wussied up and had kept on throwing chairs, if the Knight that I loved to watch was on the court, it wouldn’t have been a tap to the chin of the Texas Tech player, it would have been an UPPERCUT!!!!

YYAAAHHH, YYYAAAAHHH; coach Knight, the Howard Dean of College Basketball

They are the biggest babies in the world over there. According to them no one can be better. stop crying you bunch of losers!!!!!!!!

This isn’t over till the Helms Foundation concludes its “research.”

Has Smith really not been elevated to Holy Spirit status yet?

Isn’t Dean Smith God? How can you elevate God? You mock him by claiming He is only a Saint.

The one thing that shocks me about Smith’s tenure at UNC, is the only NCSU coach he has not coached against, since the inception of the ACC, is Sidney Lowe.

The man coached for a long long time.

SFN, great post but you might want to check the wording on your part of it. I’m not sure it is all grammatical/sensical.

As for Woody, let’s pray he lives forever. My Carolina friends say he is an embarrassment that they are cursed with until he can no longer speak. (Their Jed.) My favorite Woodyism came at the beginning of Matt Doherty’s first year when the EA Allstars beat UNX by what seemed like 25+ points. Woody said that the thrashing could be explained by the fact that teams play their very best basketball in the Dean dome because it is such an honor to play Carolina on their home floor. Yeah right, nothing to worry about, right Woody? I’ve always been amazed that UNX would allow the ongoing embarassment of having him be the voice of the Holes.

I was watching the UNC furman game a few years ago, and listening to the radio at the same time on the UNC station while talegating at the NCSU game. The furman player broke a play around the side, and a UNC player made a shoe-string tackle. On the radio woody said, “and the Swarming unc defense stops the furman wide out” and i was like my god the may is an idiot.

you guys know dean smith personally, yeah right.
no human is a saint, but to compare mr. smith’s behavior to mr. knight’s is ridiculous.
woody durham is hard to take, just like every school’s radio network announcer is hard to take for their opposition.
    Talk about being whiny!

Completely off subject, but Arizona State lost to Davidson in the championship game of the Arizona State Sleep America Classic. Isn’t the title of the tourney a great name for Sendek’s offense.

Sorry for the Sendek bashing but I couldn’t resist.

My favorite Woody line: “He’s a freshman, but only in class.” Once in Reynolds we (HOZE Squad) were able to lure Woody into leaning out of the radio “booth.” We took the opportunity to sing a special song to him. He was not amused. His brief pairing with Bobby Roberts on CD Chesley telecasts was the high point of his career in my estimation.

  14. BoKnowsNCS71 01/04/2007 at 1:07 PM #

Gannon — Lets don’t talk about (he who shall not be named) or his record at that school. In a few weeks the W-L records could be the same or worse.

Just gives me bad flash backs man.

  15. GAWolf 01/04/2007 at 1:29 PM #

The real irony of Woody’s alleged “outing” of Bobby Knight’s record is that it’s not like he wouldn’t break it anyway… surely we’re not talking about hundreds of forfeits even if Woody’s argument held water. It’s just a silly, silly thing to claim. Before Knight is done he will not only surpass Dean’s record, he will likely go significantly beyond.

  16. Pack84 01/04/2007 at 2:01 PM #

GAWolf is exactly right. I mean, let’s say Knight’s record includes (just for an example) 4 forfeits over the years. Don’t you think TT will win at least 4 more games this year, or next? It’s a silly, stupid thing for the Woodster to bring up, not that being stupid has ever stopped him before.

  17. LRM 01/04/2007 at 2:28 PM #

I remember Woody taking some heat years ago because everyone always knew what town a kid was from and what high school he played at, but never what down it was or where the ball was on the court.

But I think it just runs in the business. Listening to Hahn and Haynes is just pure comedy.

My favorite Gary Hahn quote of all time, after cruising to the Hispanic College Fund Classic title last season: “It never gets old winning championships…”

I was listening to Woody this year after Thanksgiving during the UNC-Tennessee broadcast. He told everyone that on the next Monday, at 2:45 PM the following:

Please join us as we introduce our new football coach, Bruce Davis.

    It was just too funny.

  19. wufpaxno1 01/04/2007 at 2:42 PM #

“Well I wouldn’t worry too much about the forfeits Woody, it really doesn’t matter because I am pretty sure that Knight probably plays partial qualifiers anyway.” – CTC

  20. Mike 01/04/2007 at 2:51 PM #

And for all of you who complain about Hahn and his 1st game comment this year that NC State has beaten a #1 team for the first time ever in CF. And after the Apps won again this year, not only did we beat a #1 team but look how much more significant it is that they repeated!

And as bad as that was, still dont think it compares to UNX. The guy they had for football color this year was BY FAR the worst color commentator I ever heard. He added nothing from a color standpoint, only offered to serve more to the WD hierachy. I think he has to ask Woody’s permission to use the restroom.

We always had a running joke about WD. You did not need to know the score because you could tell by the tone of his voice. Carolina by 30 Woody is high picthed screaming, close game he is tense and tight, and Carolina losing he would be soft and monotone. Kind of like the shoestrng tackle cpwolf spoke of. I know several instances simialr to that one, wondering if I was watching the same game. Amazing, and this guy is a legend and hall of famer?

  21. Mike 01/04/2007 at 2:59 PM #

    Thanks Gannon.

If only every radio broadcaster was as first-rate as former Panthers announcer Bill Rozinski (sp?)…

  23. CarnifeX 01/04/2007 at 3:10 PM #

Better yet, if only every broadcaster was as first-rate as the ‘Canes announcers, Tripp Tracy and Doofus McGee (can’t remember his name off the top of my head). These guys are the most biased announcers I have ever listened to, but since they’re for the ‘Canes, its not too bad.

  24. choppack1 01/04/2007 at 3:20 PM #

Yep BJD – don’t get me started on Mick Mixon…

  25. Dr. BadgerPack 01/04/2007 at 3:22 PM #

I’m sure that at least some (if not all) of the forfeits being referred to are related to the fab five at Michigan. If memory serves, they pooched two years because of Webber.

Perhaps there are others, but (as others have pointed out) it isn’t like Knight wouldn’t eventually pass them.

Actually, I’m sure Knight would love to not have the official record. It would give him another bleeping exposure marathon on ESPN for “the real record” chase…
