Championship Sunday Open Thread

I just had a profoundly sad realization – today will be the last day of real football gluttony for over 7 months. Yes, there’s still the Super Bowl, but that’s more of an event than red meat for the hard core fan. Plus, it’s only one game! With the NFL, one game a day is never enough.

First half Bears/Saints thoughts: Rex Grossman is either high, or has a double digit IQ. When your TE has to tell you what the rules for calling time outs are…that’s just sad. Drew Brees is so similar to the man who replaced him (Philip Rivers) that it’s scary. Duece McAllister needs more touches, IMHO. I think the Bears will win (despite the extreme disadvantage at the QB position), and have been predicting Colts/Bears all week long. Too many people are calling for upsets by the Pats and Saints, which is usually the kiss of death in the unpredictable NFL. An enjoyable game to watch since both sets of fans, coaches, teams, and cities are easy to like.

5:09 Update – Or maybe the Saints just need to get the ball to Reggie Bush in the open field. And I’m not really entitled to second guess Sean Payton (who was far and away the best coach in the NFL this season, IMHO), but I think it was a big mistake not to try a safe play to pick up 5-6 yards on 3rd and 10 from the Bears’ 29. Get in FG position, and see how Grossman reacts playing from behind with the home crowd ready to lynch him.

5:26 Update – This is the first snow game I have had the privilege to see in HD…and it’s incredible. Kudos to Fox for having the best HD quality of the broadcast networks. I am thinking the scoring is done at 18-14.

5:43 Update – So much for the scoring being done! Grossman really came through, then the defense got the jugular.

9:09 Update – I don’t care what Phil Simms says, I think that force out call was pretty weak. Fucking Patriots.

Drew Brees is a fav of mine. I was rooting for Rivers for that last two years to become a starter, but I understood the Chargers for sticking with Brees till after the injury. glad to see him bounce back at a team that I cant help but root for.

Saints are getting Owned. It pains me to say this this, GO COLTS. Damn, I hate the Pats

I never thought I would root for Payton Manning but I have to now. First the Panthers didn’t make the playoffs – then the Eagles got knocked out, then the Chargers, now the Saints. Peyton/Payton? is the best of three evils. I hate “DA Bears” and hate the Patriots even more.

    Peyton choking AGAIN…

Damn you Marlon McCree! Bat the fucking ball down and Rivers is winning the Super Bowl this year!

It looks like a wrap in the colts/pats game. Just what I didn’t want to see the Patriots and the Bears in the SB! Any thoughts on the winner of this one?

The NFL now has got NCAA Women’s College soccer. UNX=NE Pat’s.

colts loook horrible. NE defense is looking good. Pats vs Da Bulls could be a sleeper.

I hate the Patriots, and that force out call was weak.

Wow – What a game! It really doesn’t get any better than that. I’m very happy for Peyton and Dungy – pulling for both of them.

Hey TVP good call on Peyton’s Choke job. I got something you can choke on. Losing to the Patriots in the past was not choking. You need to learn the game.

I shouldn’t have doubted the Colts. Dungy coached great and Manning exectued. Should be an intersting Superbowl with Tony vs. Lovey. My pick would be the Colts in a Grosssman meltdown.

“today will be the last day of real football gluttony for over 7 months.”

You’re crazy. The NFL draft is like drinking a glass of football gravy. Nothing but hot stove action, speculation, highlights galore, and you’d think that 32 teams were going to win the superbowl next year.

My absolute favorite weekend of the year. I’ll watch 18 hours of football that weekend.

Fox HD blows away CBS. I have to admit NBC’s HD is pretty good too, but Fox has got it going on.

Great games last night…..good for Dungy and for Peyton to shake that monkey.

I agree, something just doesn’t feel right about one NFL game in a day. Even on Monday (on ESPN).
