I will admit to having a special bit of hate in my heart for the Hokies, ever since that damned Peach Bowl in the late 80s (1987?), when VT faked injuries and took a dive (drawing a phantom pass interference call) to set up the game-winning FG. Followed nicely by their kicker giving our fans the finger. Plus, the neverending saga of the fun-loving Mexico brothers. You stay classy, Blacksburg.

Anyway, remeber last year – when the all-ACC first team was comprised of one guard and 4 PF/C types? The 2006-07 Wolfpack might have won 5 or 6 in that league. Unfortunately, the ACC guard renaissance is in full flourish, and tonight’s opponent is led by…you guessed it, another outstanding guard tandem – Zabian Dowdell and Jamon Gordon. Both of these guys merit at least 2nd team all-ACC status, and should lead an end-to-end ass kicking tonight. If you want hope, then pray that VT overlooks us much the way UNC overlooked them, in a nice bit of cross-state non-rivalry reverse karma.

Anyway, I’ve taken my Xanax for the evening, and I’m ready to take what’s coming to my beloved Wolfpack. Who’s with me?

9:27 – No sucking so far. Atsur playing well, and if McCauley had hit the wall, he’s blasted through it tonight.

9:31 – I don’t like this Vasallo guy. He’s going to kill us, I fear. I’ve had hemmorhoids (sp?) more insightful than Cliff Ellis. Can’t say enough about Atsur and Big Ben so far.

9:36 – 2 fouls on Vasallo. Sweet. VT playing 11, but not trapping us. Weird.

9:39 – Costner seems mad tonight. He plays better that way.

9:41 – I noted this hypothesis awhile back, but we really have played much better on the road in our ACC games. In every home
contest, we’ve sucked.

9:47 – What a stupid-assed play. Grant doesn’t hold for last shot, VT gets 4 point play. Instead of 6+ point lead, it’s 2. Stupid freaking Grant.

10:15 – We are showing character by the ass-load. If we played like this at home, we could be a .500 ACC team.

10:30 – OK, I guess Grant is making up for his lobotomy moment. Need to finish this one off. No matter the stat line, Atsur is the player of the game, IMHO.

10:35 – Grant got mugged there. Could be a big turning point.

10:39 – We are going to blow it.

10:48 – Being wrong (hopefully) never felt so right.

11:12 – Sorry for the late/sporadic posting – too damned giddy! Wife also wouldn’t let me jinx with a happy post down the stretch. Final score: NC State 70, VT 59. Every player in the top 7 had a vital play in securing this win. Whatever Sid said to Gavin at the half…I hope he remembers to say it again. Pack does what Duke and UNC failed to do (hell, Duke couldn’t even do it at HOME), and we are now tied for 8th.

And the last shall be first; or the last shall beat the first; or whatever. Great game! Best defense we’ve played all year. Best game we’ve played all year.

Coach Lowe said on WPTF yesterday that he thought the team could build from their defensive effort against Virginia. I guess he was right!

CONGRATS COACH LOWE & THE PACK!

WOWeeWoWeeWOWe! I loved it when Fells made that dunk and the announcer went nuts. If we can beat VT we can beat anyone! But (we have to play like we did tonight) and (the other team has to play bad like VT did).

  11. beowolf 01/31/2007 at 11:12 PM #

Also, a Carolina fan friend had said to me today, “Looks like y’all will get killed tonight in Blacksburg.” I had replied, “Hey, just because y’all couldn’t win up there doesn’t mean we can’t.”

Of course, I wasn’t really expecting the upset — but I sure am glad to see it!

    Ellis & Hogwood = WORSTEST 🙂

Nice game Gavin Grant. Way to keep your head in the game, guy. Played under control and had an EXCELLENT game.

Hahahahaha…serves the VT coach right…I heard him on the radio last year talking smack about Pack fans and their expectations.

    Aw, come on now!

The Pack is Back – A sign of things to come, baby!!
A GREAT game plan by Coach Lowe! Completely took their guards out of the game-if you can do that, and kept feeding it to our BIGS! Great game by all – esp. Big Ben and Brandon!!!!!!!!!!!!
    GO PACK!!!

  16. TNCSU 01/31/2007 at 11:29 PM #

^^Grant is a yo yo. He makes a good play and then he turns it over. He’s a human turnover waiting to happen. We have better chemistry when he is not in the game. He tries to hard to make a play. Is it to late to deport him.

I was thinkin’ the same thing, but the guy stepped up when it mattered! Who the heck knows??? GO PACK!

Wow… It’s really weird how well Lowe has prepared this team for the Wake Forest and VT games on the road. I think most of us are shocked just because of our now constant state of cautious optimism with a team that might be lucky to make the NIT.

Anyways some good things I saw in the game for sure.

Gavin Grant stepped up in a HUGE way. VT was poised for a run and he just went off and hitting some clutch free throws. I was very impressed with his game tonight.

Ben McCauley. What more can you say.

Brandon Costner is a rebounding machine. I love how him and McCauley seemed to have learned from the ACC competition and have gotten in the habit of tipping balls. That led to a lot of offensive rebounds in our direction.

Courtney Fells for having a huge slam while i was in mid-criticism of him. Kind of shut me up for a while.

Bryan Nieman had a few good minutes in there. I’m always afraid he’ll get completely outmatched in the 2nd half but he usually quietly does his job.

And finally Sidney Lowe actually knows how to GAMEPLAN. This guy is so much unlike Herb Sendek. He can adjust mid-game, gameplan, and won’t wait until the other team has gone on a 40 point run to call a damn time out.

Great game all around. GO PACK!

We are actually tied for seventh. Bet you never thought that would sound good huh? They are starting to click in the system, so let’s hope they can build on this and take the Holes at least 30 minutes before they fall out. Gutty performance. and at last some shots fell.

Just saw the intro to the Stanford/Gonzaga game and the mentioned the blue collar players at 2 “white collar” universities — hey, we’ve got 2 of those white collar U’s in the Triangle, too. But, we’ve got the BLUE COLLAR U AND, we’ve got our BLUE COLLAR MONSTER, BIG BEN!!!

    A VERY APPROPRIATE WOLFPACKER!!!!!

This shows the need for some heady play (as in Atsur). The team has grown a lot over the past couple weeks – notice how much better they handled the press.
Still a long way to go but I do see progress.

  21. VaWolf82 02/01/2007 at 1:17 AM #

Just in from the game and need to wind down.

With the exception of the four point play, Fells played good defense on Dowdell. At the 3 min point in the game, I remember looking at the score board and saw that Dowdell only had three points in the second half.

During one of the timeouts, Fells was grabbing the back of his leg. But there were no signs of strain on the hammer jam he laid on the Hokies. Did Lowe have anything specific to say about Fells in the post game comments?

great game, great win, great night for wolfpack fans

  23. Jeremy Hyatt 02/01/2007 at 2:09 AM #

when VT was making their push at the end, how about Brandon Costner stepping up and hitting that three. During the game I was just thinking on my hope that he would step up this season when put on the spot.

I hope Fells can gradually hone his game as he is a tremendous athlete. Defense is a great starting point. McCauley the workhorse as usual, but got help tonite.

And Gavin was feeling it in the 2nd half, good to see that, now that he is in a more natural position.

We had some interior pass fumbling in a couple series in a row at the end that was concerning, don’t know what happened there.

There are some nice comments in cnnsi’s article, Atsur made a comment about the team growing up tonite..

i still cringe whenever anyone on our team touches the ball, because of the turnover proneness, but less tonite. good game, and needed win. congrats Sid.

I don’t know how the team will fair against the wave of players UNC will throw at us Saturday, but hopefully we can feed off this.

Mentally, this was our best game of the season. I was very impressed (except for the first 2-3 times VT ran it) with how well we beat the press. we played solid defense except for a 3 minute stretch in the 1st when coach had to call a TO just before the break and he blasted the team. I love how he calls time outs before the other team gets 3-4 baskets.
We also played well with a fairly good crowd to work against all game and even showed some poise after giving up the lead. We passed the ball much better tonight. There was much progress in this game. Considering there is an entirely new structure, offense and philosophy we should have expected it to take this long for it to start coming together. I also liked how the team gathered around the FT line on dead balls tonight. First time I have seen that this season.

VT missed a lot of easy shots in this game that would have made a big difference.. much like Ben has done the last 2 games. But we still played solid. The refs were ‘letting them play’ but were very inconsistant. I would say we got the benefit of the calls overall.

Ben… great game.. He did a great job of immediately attacking the basket or passing and not holding the ball and letting the double team come. He had been getting trapped in the last few games.
Costner great rebounding. If he gets the ball near the basket he will NOT throw it back out. I think he could be more effective by giving the ball up. He will learn.
Gavin.. never forced it and stayed focused. Yes, he had a few TOs, but I could live with them. What a great second half.
Fells.. solid game against good competition. One day it’s gonna just all come together.. I think it might be sooner than later.
Atsur- I guess we are better with him afterall (roll eyes). He played like a senior and did a lot of coaching on the floor. I bet he is relishing playing for an NBA coach teaching him about the PG position before he goes back overseas. His shooting made the defense open up a little more for Ben.
    Neiman.. played Neimanish
Horner.. His worst game of the season. Honestly I think his new ink was hurting hm. Near the end of the game he was on the bench and it seemed to be burning him and he didn’t want to touch it. I hope I am wrong.
    Ferg…. keep plugging!

You have to be encouraged by the adjustments Lowe is making not only in game but as the sason has progressed. I think he will be a fine coach.

By far the best the game of the year we have played. Gavin played the best he has played all year in the 2nd half and he deserves tons of praise for coming through in the clutch with so much pressure placed on him all season long.
