The Georgia Tech Game – Random Musings

I don’t really have anything profound to add, but I’ll throw some stuff out for discussion, and you can share your thoughts in the comments.

First off, it seems like a good time to play Georgia Tech, coming off an emotional win against Miami and with a virtual 2 game lead in the ACC standings, thanks to tiebreaker advantages over all 3 of VT, UVA, and Miami. History tells us that it is pretty much written in stone that GT must lose 4 or 5 games every regular season. They still must travel to Athens, so I’d pencil that in as loss #3 – but the options for #4 are limited to at UNC (unlikely), home against Duke (really unlikely), or…at NC State Saturday night. If any team was ever primed for a letdown game, it is Georgia Tech.

Of course, that begs the question as to whether the Wolfpack can take advantage of yet another opportunity. As you know, our track record on cashing in is not good. However, we sadly seem to always play better after being eliminated from divisional contention. And if our players want to go to any bowl, a win on Saturday is almost essential. That said, I could just as easily see us completely crap our pants on Saturday night, in which case the typically drunk and surly “C-F night game” crowd will start to grumble (and Chuck better not be on the Jumbotron if that happens).

Speaking again of those wacky ACC standings, take a note of the ACC’s Atlantic Division, and note the Biblical nature of it: “The last shall be first (Wake), and the first shall be last (FSU).” Gold star to the first poster to cite the correct chapter and verse without using Bible.com (yes, there is such a thing).

GT is primed for a let down, and we have had most of our success against the better teams we have played; specifically ranked teams.

I think we’re gonna pull out a win here.

  2. Trout 11/02/2006 at 12:36 PM #

So who are SFN readers pulling for, Wake or BC? I’m going old school ACC, and hoping Wake wins.

It would be nice to beat GT when they are headed for a special season, like they did to us in 2002. Still one of the toughest losses of the PR era, because we came in 9-0, and had the game under control. A delay of game penalty kept a GT drive alive, and Golden dropped an INT in the endzone that would have sealed the game. Still tough to think about it. The following losses to UVA and MD were on the road, so easier to handle. That GT loss still stings (no pun intended).

My father and I are driving in the Homecoming Parade tomorrow. We’ll have 2 VIPs in his 1930 Ford A Model Roadster Deluxe. We either get Lennie Barton and Billy Maddalon (AA ED and President), or Tom Stafford and Larry Nielsen (VC Student Affairs and Provost). I’m hoping for Stafford, because it might be fun to actually get boo’ed during the Parade.

I will be pulling hard for the Deacs. It would be great to see them in the ACC title game, and even cooler if they made it all the way to the BCS. How could anyone begrudge the long-suffering, mostly pleasant Deacon fans one moment in the sun?

  4. RAWFS 11/02/2006 at 1:05 PM #

I’d like to see Wake win.

Then again, some think that Tom O’Brien might be UNC’s next coach, and a loss might help him get eased out of the door up there.

    GO DEAC’S !!!

  6. PackBacker001 11/02/2006 at 1:12 PM #

It sort of shows up several times. There’s Mark 10:31 and Mathew 19:30, but those are descriptions of the same encounter if I recall correctly. I think something similar is mentioned again (though not in those exact words) in another chapter of Mark, but I can’t remeber it and don’t want to cheat (Bible.com). Not bad for a godless heathen, right? This is more my speed. The letter to the Kansas Board of Education is classic.

Now, does that get me a t-shirt or something?

  7. Pack Laddie 11/02/2006 at 1:16 PM #

    Go Deacs!

And Trout, I would boo you, even if Stafford wasn’t in the car. But, I would have to actually be at the parade to do that.

I still think you and your Dad should pop a beer right in his (Stafford’s) face, and tell him you have already started tailgating. And that you have a keg in the trunk of the roadster.

  8. Woof Wolf 11/02/2006 at 1:34 PM #

    Go Deacs!

That race is going to be fun to watch. All of the one loss teams still have to play each and two other conference games. BC gets Duke at home but all the other games could be tough. Clemson is still in it if they beat Maryland tomorrow. The only other conference game they have left is us.

Too bad we aren’t in it.

  9. GAWolf 11/02/2006 at 1:37 PM #

Since we have nothing to gain and all other things being considered, I too will be pulling for the Deacs.

As for our game, I promise to remain relatively sober although likely surly. I’d like to enjoy the whole glorious debacle. Regardless of the outcome, it will be a debacle.

  10. Winston Wolf 11/02/2006 at 1:42 PM #

I cannot pull the Deacs. WF fans = hole fans + black clothing.

  11. brown pelican 11/02/2006 at 1:45 PM #

gotta love the deacs—great example of how a program can and should be run—good luck coach grobe!

  12. cfpack03 11/02/2006 at 2:11 PM #

Somehow Amato manages to win our “shouldn’t wins” and lose our “should wins”, so I honestely wouldn’t be surprised if we do pull off W. And if we do, it won’t change my opinion of this season.

Go deacs, b/c if BC wins, you can go ahead and crown ’em (imo).

As for the UNC-ND game, since they can’t both lose, I hope it ends tied at 0-0.

  13. partialqualifier 11/02/2006 at 2:15 PM #

Winston….that would be a sheep in Black clothing would it not?

I dont have much to add….

just would like to say that Trestman vs. Tenuta is as big a mismatch as me vs that Russian 14 yr old in a game of chess!!! Blow out city BABY!!! ( had to give a little love to Dickie V since we are on the eve of the Pack’s first bball scrimmage!)

    Also….PackLaddie….great stuff!
Ga Wolf…..great stuff!! Debacle is one of my favorite words…probably due to many years of seeing one after another as a dedicated Pack fan!!

  14. RickJ 11/02/2006 at 2:46 PM #

Until we are mathematically eliminated I will pull for all Coastal teams over Atlantic teams not named NC State and all Atlantic teams we have beaten over the ones we’ve lost to. If BC beats Wake and Clemson beats Maryland our game with Ga. Tech takes on a lot more meaning than you guys currently realize.

I fully recognize that our chances are slimmer than slim.

  15. Trout 11/02/2006 at 2:47 PM #

Laddie would boo me just for spite? Man, that’s cold.

  16. redfred2 11/02/2006 at 2:48 PM #

Out of all the ACC teams, I think WFU is one (even moreso Duke) we SHOULD be smothering on a regular basis in FB. But for some reason I don’t mind losing so bad to that program. With that said, I still want to see the Wolfpack (((PLAYERS))), more than anything, having success and playing a good game for the future.

    Go WOLFPACK!!!

    That’s right, I said it.

  17. packof81 11/02/2006 at 2:57 PM #

I ‘spect it’ll be cold as a country commode Sat’dy nite. Th’ crowd ort ta be likkered up purdy good. Put Up-Chuck Amato on th’ Jumbotron and they’ll be hooting in derision regardless who wins th’ game. Yessir.

  18. Pack Laddie 11/02/2006 at 3:30 PM #

“Laddie would boo me just for spite? Man, that’s cold.”

I am not a proponent of booing (except zebras), but in your case, I would make an exception. Folks along the route will see you, and think Doogie Howser is in the parade.

  19. Trout 11/02/2006 at 3:39 PM #

How could anyone boo Doogie Howser though. If Stafford is in the car, I’ll just assume the boos are him Laddie.

  20. Pack Laddie 11/02/2006 at 3:43 PM #

“If Stafford is in the car, I’ll just assume the boos are him Laddie.”

If Stafford is in the car, you might want to watch out for projectiles, such as eggs, tomatioes, etc.

i thought that bible verse was just a lyric to a wu-tang-clan song? huh, and to think it came from king james version. Ga tech is gonna get it saturday night, but chuck should still be feeling the heat…. did you hear that chucky?

    ice….. ice.

i too feel the need to repeat myself from time to time

I wonder if Jon Tenuta spends much time at midget league games checking out the defensive schemes.

  23. bTHEredterror 11/03/2006 at 12:28 AM #

Great point SFN, they would normally be prime for us to upset. But last year we kind of unravelled their division run on their homefield, so I think they’ll be ready. I still think we’ll beat ’em though. Reggie Ball hasn’t had his normal quota of blow-up games this year, and I think with Tank & Pressley coming up the gut all day and a good mix of blitzes, we’ll discumbobulate him into some turnovers. Hopefully he won’t gash us too many times on scrambles, look for Willie Young to have a good game.
The question is, do we give them the short field too many times to win? Cuz we will almost certainly have some turnovers against this D. I bet we do break off some big runs on some bad blitzes however. Clemson gashed them, and we are probably the only other team in the league with 2 backs of that quality.

Packaholic1 Says: “I wonder if Jon Tenuta spends much time at midget league games checking out the defensive schemes.”

Jon Tenuta, spends his time at demolition derbies picking ideas for his blitzes. I do believe that Trestman could pick up pointers from most midget league games. Sorry the humor was too subtle for you.
