It Looks Bad For Chuck

SFN will have a lot more scoop and analysis regarding the “Chuck Amato Situation” before tomorrow’s football game. Until then, we thought that we would direct your attention to Dave Glenn’s blog entry today.

“I’ve been around this university for a long, long time,” a former BOT member told the ACC Sports Journal. “I know the decision-makers, I know the trustees, and I know many other (N.C. State) people, and it is almost impossible to find anyone of influence who is standing in support of Chuck Amato right now. To my knowledge, among those folks, there is absolutely zero support for keeping him.”

Paul Johnson is the HC at Navy. Where was he before, Ga. Southern? Anyways, he is a wonderful coach indeed, but I wonder what his committments to the spread wishbone option offense is. At Navy it works, but revamping a school like NC State as far as personel to fit that offense would take a long time IMHO.

the coach at Coastal Carolina? um….NO.

BJD, it would be awful to get rid of both Amato and Fowler at the same time. Someone needs to be there to handle the football recruits and to hire the new football coach when Amato gets fired. Even if you don’t like Fowler, he is better than having no continuity and possibly losing a whole recruiting class.

Do you really want Fowler to be the person to handle the recruits? Wouldn’t you rather have one of the assistants retained to keep in contact with recruits?

Why does everyone assume that a coaching search has to be lead by the AD? By all accounts, UNC’s AD had the responsibility of reading the press announcement and little else.

    Hey JimVavano,
Try this link for the game tonight. I listened to Chuck’s radio show earlier in the week and it worked great.

“the coach at Coastal Carolina? um….NO”

Why not? My gut reaction was the same initially, but after doing a little research on this guy, my opinion is different. I really think that this guy may be a younger version of Dick Sheridan. Also, it looks like he’s had phenomenal graduation rates.

One thing about the Conventional Wisdom – a lot of times it is dead wrong. The CW was that Sidney Lowe was a horrible hire because he had no college b’ball experience and a horrid record as a HC in the NBA. The CW was that the new OC at Arkansas would flop tremendously since he was just a high school coach last year. They have one of the most effective offenses in the country.

I want a Head Coach who has a proven track record of excellence. Cowher, Paul Johnson and even Bennett fit that bill. Chow and Jumbo Fischer, not so much so. However, those guys could end up great too…Those 6 would be my targets.

Just so you all know…Fowler is not going anywhere! CTC will be stepping down on Sunday. Already a done deal

Chuck got his “one more year” this year. He was done after the Clemson debacle last year, but the finish to get to 6-5, and the muffler bowl bought him one more year. He has failed miserably this year. Time for a change.

Please..everyone cheer loud for Chuck today, despite his record against O’Cains he has taken us to a higher level in recruiting, facilities, and expectations. He loves the University and is one of us. Today will be his last day. Win or Lose… Thanks Chuck

For those that are wishing on Cowher……he is a D coach, and how many D coaches succeed in college? He is also Alum, and sometimes Alum makes it harder. He is a big name, but he has never recruited, never had to deal with 18-21 year olds. I like Cowher but I think we might all be disappointed IF that is the route to go.

And for those that say “I dont think we can stand a triple wishbone here…..” – all you need to know is Johnson is a good coach who runs the system best suited to his players. When he was at GA Southern, he ran a wide open passing attack very successfully. He runs the bne at Navy because that is what works wiht the talent he has. Maybe Trestman should learn to do the same.

“how many D coaches succeed in college?: Pete Carroll

If Foulup is to be let go (I hope!), assistant ADs and assistant FB coaches (Cigetti and Stroud) could provide interim “maintenance.” Have just one upheavel in the department, rather than two separate ones to prolong the media frenzy!

I agree with 98st8. Show Chuck Amato respect this afternoon and prove to people that we do appreciate our coaches.

As far losing both Amato and Lee Fowler at the same time versus continuity? As witnessed before, if you want to lose a recruiting class, leave them in the capable hands of Lee Fowler. That type of continuity needs to come to abrupt end.

Having spoken with 3 BoT members at different times through the season (family friends and/or acquaintances), I heard much of what Glenn heard.

Chuck is on an island. Only those deluded by his big talk stand with him. That is a small number of Wolfpackers.

I am somewhat surprised that the deal is done regarding Amato’s ouster. I am not displeased, though, nor should anyone else be unhappy regarding Amato’s firing. Now we can stop talking about program building and actually do it.

Just for the record, I hate for CTC to not be the FB coach at NCSU! He and I were in the same freshman class. I was there watching the “White Shoes Gang” headed by one CTC. While I didn’t know him, I did see and hear him around campus and learned even then about his intensity. I would be elated if he could push the Wolfpack program over the top to the next level, and retire someday with a NCSU NC.

What an idea – two NCSU alumni coaching the two major NCSU sports to NCs! I wish it could have happened! But IMO the handwriting is clear on the wall.

One or two games is not the issue. I’m not happy with the W-L results OR the “flavor” of Wolfpack play on the field. CTC has embarrassed me more than once with his antics in PCs, on the air and on the sidelines. But, bottom line, there is an obvious unsuccessful trend in the Wolfpack FB program, not just Ws and Ls, but the high TO rate in assistants, the poor player discipline, the “thuggery” evident on the field, and poor game management by the HC.

I must conclude that either his ego will not let him see that he needs to change, and effect the changes needed, or he has reached the limit of his abilities as a HC ego or no, or both. In either case, sad as it makes me, I see nothing to gain, and much to lose, by retaining him for 2007.

I must thank CTC for all he has done for Wolfpack FB – and that is much in the way of facilities and program momentum (which must not be lost in this transition!) But timely decisions in consideration of what is best for Wolfpack FB IN THE LONG RUN is what is mandatory for building a championship program if we are ever to have one again.

david bennett is highly respected throughout the coaching community—did very well at catabwa—d II—has handled the move to I-AA well at CCU—still—noticably absent from any conversation is the name of shane montgomery—D-I experience at miami—great resume with the passing game—as a player—a coordinator and a head coach—might fit the bill as an ‘up and comer’ who would build here and stay—if we try the home run strategy that had little success in the basketball search—the only success being the lucky hire of sid late—we will probably make a run at petrino and then paul johnson—we must be prepared to be deal with the aftermath of those courtships with plan c—hence—montgomery

It’s a real shame we have to kick one of our own to the curb … especially one who bleeds red.

    Unfortunately, the time has come.

Still … you can’t help but imagine how different things “would have been” if Chuck would have had (at the very least) an average QB to depend on.

Over the last 7 years, is it a reach to think we would have won at least half?

NCSU81: thanks for the heads-up on that radio link. . . Will sure beat the hell out of staring at the live stats page!!

It’s more than just the QB position, we have two of the best running backs anyone could possibly hope for, yet they haven’t even been used effectively. The OL, the QB, the play calling, sloppiness and penalties, no continuity, I hate it as much anyone for CA, but it has to more with the overall, than any one position on the football field.

  21. Woof Wolf 11/25/2006 at 2:31 PM #

“you can’t help but imagine how different things “would have been” if Chuck would have had (at the very least) an average QB to depend on.”

If you want to start with the what if stuff; what if the quarterback fairy had not left Phillip on his doorstep.

    RF2

    Oh I know, I know … and I agree

To your list I would add: lack of discipline, lack of proper motivation and lack of pride

BUT … insane as I am, I believe a good QB is the catalyst

Heaven forbid … a good QB makes an average O-Line look – and play – better than they are (Wake’s 2nd string QB!)

If Philip’s replacement will simply hit the TE in-stride … LBs will not cheat-up

If “P’s R” will simply throw down field … straight … say more than 10 yards … DB’s have to play honest

If “P’s R” can simply throw on-the-run to “one of the red jerseys” … the DL has to worry about a run, a pass, a bootleg, a counter, a reverse!!!!!!!

Heck, even Trestman can be creative with a QB like this!

I’m starting to rant like Corn-holio … I had better stop now

  23. 94wolfpack 11/25/2006 at 2:51 PM #

^ I’d argue he’d be better off without having Philip. Expectations wouldn’t have gotten so high so fast. He would’ve been given a 2-3yr grace period and then people would’ve started judging him in earnest. People have seen/felt that State was close and no improvement on that has been tough on a lot of us.

Slow and steady sustained successes = long career. As opposed to starting off with a bang and ending with a whimper.

  24. legacyman 11/25/2006 at 2:54 PM #

I still feel the OL has been the main problem. Daniel could be much more effective if he didn’t have to run for his life although it is not as bad as last year.

After watching many football games this year, all of the major programs make the same mistakes that we do only they have enough offensive talent to overcome them. Still, Texas, NCAA champ last year, lost to A&M…guess why, a not so effective QB who was injured.

I am still on Chuck’s side and I want to win as badly as any of you but I don’t get a vote nor do you.

  25. BLUE SUCKS 11/25/2006 at 3:03 PM #

Oh, and Daniel doesn’t count … he’s still in his grace period
