Breakfast With Oblinger

Hopefully, a voice mail is being left in the NC State football office right now – “Hey, Chuck, this is Jim Oblinger. It’s been awhile since we got together – could you meet me for breakfast on Monday? Oh yeah, please ask Lee if he can join us, too.”

There is no reason to even wait for next week’s game. Chuck Amato needs to be fired by the end of business Monday, so we can make some calls/visits over the long weekend. Hopefully, it will be AD Bobby Purcell spearheading the effort.

From what we have heard at SFN, Chuck needed to lose out for firing to be a certainty. Hopefully, today’s sorry showing will be enough to tip the big donors’ and the Chancellor’s hands.

bjd: Do you really think Oblinger and/or Fowler have the balls to fire Amato? Amato being canned will only happen if the big wheels like Murphy, Dail, Stroud, Day, etc make it happen.

  2. BJD95 11/18/2006 at 4:17 PM #

I have been told by 2 independent sources that Chuck Amato would be fired if Chuck loses out (and maybe if he just lost today). Oblinger is ready to make the move and the big donors are squarely (not sure if unanimously) behind him.

I’m putting this out there because the pressure needs to be public and intense from this moment forward.

Its a damned shame that HE MUST LOSE OUT for termination to even be an option. Fucking A people, he has lost 3 straight to an archrival that has never been worse and to a coach who was fired for said futility.

^oh please oh please oh please oh please be true.

    Chuck’s record After Rivers:

    16-21 (8-16)

    GET NORM CHOW NOW!!

  6. DRW 11/18/2006 at 4:29 PM #

BJD: I hope you are right. I will believe it when I see it, though, because I don’t think that our AD, Chancellor, Board of Trustees and big time donors are committed to excellence. I think they are satisfied with mediocrity.

I really can’t add anything to the post. He simply HAS to go. That was the most pathetic performance I have ever seen by an NC State team in a rival game, complete with the classic Chuck Amato player ejection to add that little extra soupcon of humiliation.

    Pathetic.

  8. Micky McCarthy 11/18/2006 at 4:32 PM #

    who was ejected?

  9. Cardiff Giant 11/18/2006 at 4:35 PM #

Mickey, the number was 38, I think. Obviously my post was not directed at you, incidentally.

Everyone in the Wolfpack family needs to be well aware that today is a crossroads in the football program at NC STATE. I’ll take it a step further. If our administration allows this continue, it is a slap in the face to everyone who attended the university. I want to be a University that strives for higher standards. What does that say to future recruits….? We can say all we want that we are a better footbal school than Carolina, but the proof is in the results. Furthermore Carolina has the guts to make a change. If we choose to stay on the “sidelines” with this decision, we say to recruits, alumni and furture applicants that we accept mediocrity. What a SAD day to be a wolfpack fan.

Demanding excellence is not being a turncoat. Fire Chuck today.

  12. joe 11/18/2006 at 4:39 PM #

Not that it matters, but I think the ejection was actually a UNC guy.

Assuming he is fired, Fowler is going to look silly after all his past statements of support. But nobody here is going to care that he looks silly are they?

    BJD:

While watching the game, I remembered your comment about UNC going 0-11 two months ago. Sorry to disappoint you–twice now. At least your season was ruined a couple games before today’s loss. And, maybe you won’t have to suffer CTC much longer.

I wonder which coach will stay in the Triangle longer, Davis or CTC’s eventual replacement (if it’s not Cowher)?

How many coaches that make over $900,000K per year have a record of 3-8 with a loss to a team that WAS 1-9? It’s a business, and if you pay someone that much money, you should get results. If I thought Chuck was just having a rebuilding year (or even 2) that would be different, but he’s not the guy who is going to take us to the next level!

  15. 98st8 11/18/2006 at 4:48 PM #

THE only reason CTC is still our coach is because we had the best coach on the field (PR) for 4 years. If no PR then no CA

  16. TNCSU 11/18/2006 at 4:49 PM #

First season or two, 3-9 is excusable – or even applauble at Duke – but not here! I just don’t know how you can keep him.

  17. 98st8 11/18/2006 at 4:50 PM #

uhhh… Rumble Pack… we are at the lowest level dude. Any other level is higher. We just lost to a team that had not beaten a div 1 opp. Thier fired coach just outcoached ours….ANY level is higher

  18. quackpipe 11/18/2006 at 4:51 PM #

after today, the next level is 4-A.

    we could be competitive there

  19. 98st8 11/18/2006 at 4:54 PM #

under Lee Fowler’s leadership our basketball program is picked for dead last and our football program is dead last…Duke doesn’t count. Good job Lee, well done

  20. joe 11/18/2006 at 4:59 PM #

I just found out Chow has a PhD from BYU in psychology. The one thing about him is it is doubtful he would say no if offered the job – he is 60 so he won’t get many more chances.

  21. majorwolf 11/18/2006 at 5:05 PM #

What is the next level? Third place in the conference maybe? haha. 98st8, don’t diss Fowler for hiring coach Lowe. So far I’m impressed by Lowe. He is a game coach, unlike Sendek. He will get the most out of his players.

  22. wolfpacker55 11/18/2006 at 5:08 PM #

Coach Norm Chow??? AD Bill Cowher??? Give Bill some time off from coaching and get used to the college game until Chow is ready to leave…. That would be ideal. See ya Chuchy! Later Lee, you are not good at what you do, Fowler!

  23. old13 11/18/2006 at 5:20 PM #

Jeb (Mr. Mediocrity) Foulup still needs to go! He’s embarrassed the university nationally, and insulted fans and alumni (including me!), on more than one occasion. NCSU athletics isn’t going anywhere with him in charge! The best leadership is that which knows when to lead, follow or get the hell out of the way – and he hasn’t a clue!

  24. Cardiff Giant 11/18/2006 at 5:21 PM #

“Oh, by the way, I wasn’t accusing you specifically Cardiff Giant. Sorry you took it that way. It is just the feel I get from a lotof State Fans.”

I apologize for misreading your intent. As one might imagine I am pretty irritated.

To answer your question, a coach in his first year taking over a program in shambles who goes 3-9 should not be fired. But that is both inapposite and irrelevant to the Chuck Amato situation. He is in his seventh season in a year when WAKE FOREST will be playing in the championship game, has lost six straight, and has just lost to our rival for the third straight year when that rival had not previously beaten a 1-A team.

This is probably the worst performance, overall, I have ever seen from an NC State team, barring arguably MOC’s 1996 debacle. Truly, truly awful stuff. And yes, he should be fired for it.

Micky McCarthy Says: “who was ejected?”

Miserable game, miserable coaching but it was #38 (UNX) who was ejected after 2 unsportsman like conduct penalties on the same play.
