Preparing for Akron

Akron

We’ve been trying to get the gentleman at Section Six to consider coming over to StateFansNation. His stuff is just wonderful and fits EXACTLY what we do here. We shall not give up our quest!! 🙂

In the meantime, the work done at Section Six and Red & White from State continue to complement our work perfectly. So today, Section Six prepares us for Akron with no need for us to do much else on the topic other than turn your attention to some interesting Akron bits from Ohio.com:

Running Back Performance
At first glance, Dennis Kennedy’s rushing statistics against Penn State weren’t that impressive. He had 59 yards in the University of Akron’s 34-16 loss to Penn State last Saturday.

But Zips coach J.D. Brookhart said Kennedy’s play was noteworthy, considering the 5-foot-11, 200-pound sophomore went up against a physical and athletic defensive unit that had four players back from last year’s Big Ten championship team.

Brookhart was most pleased that Kennedy showed durability. He carried 25 times and had a few plays where he needed power and strength by turning several would-be tackles for losses into positive yardage.

“Dennis was our offensive player of the game,” Brookhart said. “He played extremely well. He was good on pass protection, ran the ball well, caught the ball and just made some things happen. Overall, Dennis played a great game.”

Kennedy originally signed a national letter of intent with Ohio State but never played for the Buckeyes. He ended up at UA before the 2004 season and sat out the year. Last year, he played behind Brett Biggs but took advantage of his limited playing time. In the spring, he solidified himself as the starter.

* Kicking Game – “Zips kicker Matt Domonkos and punter John Stec made their collegiate debuts against the Nittany Lions, and the results were mixed. Domonkos kicked a 46-yard field goal late in the second quarter but missed a point-after attempt in the third quarter.

“I thought Matt came in and stepped up,” Brookhart said. “For him to hit a 46-yarder in those conditions, right off the bat, was awesome. I think he got overly excited on the (PAT) and just tried to kill it. He’ll learn from that.”

Stec had seven punts for an average of 33.3 yards in rainy conditions.

“John had no trouble fielding the ball all camp, and he has very good hands,” Brookhart said. “You couple 107,000 fans, 18 years old, and a wet ball with a rush coming at you… he didn’t play well, but he responded after getting hit a couple times and just kept going out there. He will get better.”

* Injury report – Senior left tackle Tim Crouch injured an ankle against Penn State and missed practice Tuesday, but Brookhart expects him to start Saturday at North Carolina State. “We’re just trying to figure out if we want him to practice or whether resting him will be the best thing.”

* Updated Akron Preview from Pack Pride

^ Justin Burke should be able to give the ball to the Brown or Baker just as well and is supposed to have a better arm than Stone.

yes, AB24 is definitely a monster. That was a 2005 and pre-season 2006 D-II all-american safety, Corey Lynch, he ran over too

If we lost last Saturday it would of been Stone’s fault in a lot of people’s mind so it is normal to attribute the wins to his leadership on the field. In my life at least, people have always pointed out the winning percentage of a team under a particular QB. I’ve never heard that a RB is responsible even though he very well may be the reason. More often than not it has a lot to do with a lot of people other than the QB.

We hear River’s record as a starter and that he never missed a start. However it is misleading to some to talk about Stone’s record as a starter or that he has yet to miss a start. 7 games into Stone’s starting career the team is 6-1. That isn’t far off the mark that we had River’s third year and he was our god but in that year we didn’t really play anyone until the 3 game skid. So the ‘we haven’t beat anyone but FSU’ is such bs. We’ve beat everyone on the schedule.

I just don’t understand the bile some spew over a winning team.

  4. redfred2 09/06/2006 at 4:01 PM #

Hey, Davis stayed and stayed in the games, throwing poorly, while Stone just watching form the sidelines. If players aren’t focused and ready, sit em down for a while, this isn’t baseball. It should have happened a lot more and earlier with Davis/Stone. Are we in for a repeat performance? What if, I’m not going to say it, but who, if anyone, has any game experience at taking snaps should something change?

  5. Cardiff Giant 09/06/2006 at 4:50 PM #

    ^^

And I don’t understand why you would describe legitimate concerns over a quarterback who can’t pass as “bile spew.” But each to his own, I guess.

“In all fairness, any team that cant run is going to be in trouble. We have an incredible running back in Brown. We should be celebrating that more.”

True. My comment was intended to emphasize the one-dimensional nature of our offense. Now, if that one dimension works consistently – fine. But history of this team suggests otherwise. If you have no passing threat, they simply stack eight in the box every play and even someone as good as Andre can’t get it done.

  6. class of 74 09/06/2006 at 4:51 PM #

The really sad part of this is we have a talent like Blackman and a QB that seemingly can’t get him the ball. Sooner or later we will see equal or better talent putting 9 in the box against our running game and that’s when we had better find a passing game.

Our defense looked very good overall but they can not be expected to make up for an offense that will struggle to score 21 ppg.

  7. Cardiff Giant 09/06/2006 at 4:57 PM #

I looked for a Zips message board and found two, but felt kind of bad for them as they don’t appear to have much traffic. This one guy definitely thinks postive, however, on Zips.org:

“Where will shop be set up. I received my tickets in the mail today, section 17AA. I’ll be flying up from Miami friday. Given NC State’s “passing” offense and the Zip’s reported DEFENSE against the run, I believe this is the D-1 breakout game we’ve been waiting for and I would not miss it for anything.”

  8. packpigskinfan23 09/06/2006 at 5:09 PM #

^they played well against PSU… cant blame them for hoping…

I totally agree the Davis/Stone switch should have been made sooner, or that Stone would have been the starter from the beginning… it would have been rough at first, but I dont think that his ability’s would be in questioned at this point, had that been the case.

  9. redfred2 09/06/2006 at 6:03 PM #

^There’s no clear option waiting on the sideline, but is it happening again? Is the idea to stick with first option no matter what, and make it up with the run, the defense, or elsewhere? Stone’s already been involved in competition for the position, but not as the top dog with someone nipping at his heels, that helps in a lot of situations.

    Just ask Drew Bledsoe.

  10. redfred2 09/06/2006 at 6:10 PM #

    Supposed to say “Drew Breez.”

Yelling at the kids while typing that.

  11. redfred2 09/06/2006 at 6:13 PM #

Or “Drew Bree”s”,” hell the guy P Rivers lit a fire under. You know who I’m talking about.

  12. Wolfpack4ever 09/06/2006 at 6:20 PM #

redfred2 I think we are more aligned than it appears. And we can’t have it both ways. We can’t pooh pooh ASU being a from Division whatever so we can’t count the W as some say and at the same time say that is significant competition to practice against. The Carolina Panther O-Line consistently says practicing against Peppers, Bruckner, Jenkins and Kemoeatu makes them better linemen. So it could be for our Offense going against or D. If as someone said, he saw receivers running loose down field well past the defenders (which I seriously doubt, both in fact and that he could not see Stone’s happy feet and three or four receivers all at the same time from the NEZ) what “practice” of consequence is this?

Stone went against FSU, BC, Md and other strong D’s last year and yes he had a bad case of the “duck and runs.” I like that he ducked and ran instead of throwing INTs for TDs. The word is that he is sticking in the pocket, going through progressions and QBing better overall.

I agree that in due time we need to give DE some meaningful playing experience — by meaningful I don’t mean mop-up duty trying to complete some long passes to satisfy the Wolf-fans. IMNSHO DE needs to play inside the offense the coaches have chosen to run. He needs to stand in against a 9-in-the-box pass rush, go through the progressions and have his skinny ass flattened by some 300 pounders as well. As far as Burke is concerned, his last game wasn’t Division I or I-A or even Div II, it was high school. Putting him in because “his arm ia better than Stone’s” is a terrible an idea as I have read here or anywhere. Suggestions like that (not redfred2’s) reveal more about the writer’s knowledge of Division I football than they do about what might work for NCSU.

Enough for now and I didn’t even get to the ludicrous whining by the doom and gloomers that their — ridiculous-for-SFN blog — comments should not be challenged or their bashing of our QB is in anyway analysis. “Stone sucks” is not analysis, ladies.

  13. redfred2 09/06/2006 at 7:57 PM #

I don’t know why I felt this way earlier, but thought this team would be motivated beyond belief. I thought we’d see a team that wanted to blow people out and take no prisoners from day one this season. I was pumped up and expecting to see a new, and more confident football team, and coaches ready to prove something by silencing their critics on the football field. Reflecting back on the actual facts of the matter, I have no idea where my enthusiam was generating from.

It’s time that all expectancy levels around NC State athletics are raised back up to where they should be. That starts at the very top and filters down to the fans. Does any one really believe that Lee Fowler was expecting or had a plan when HS left? Do you believe that he had been advised to have a plan place or else, or that pressure was coming from within way back when it should have been. I do not.

The reason I bring that up now is that the basketball program was taken to a certain level and allowed to just wallow there for years. Then when one person walked away, it all fell apart and back to square one. No one wanted the job, the program played weak schedules and had no outside identity, and there wasn’t much desireable to be handed down to the next person in line. Money is, but it isn’t everything.

I say the same is happening with football, pitifully weak schedule wise, and the whole ‘nine yards.’ It’s time to expect a BCS conference team who is developing NFL talent left and right to start proving it on the football field in Carter-Finley. Again, it eerily parallels the basketball program and the C Simmons situation, but not at all down that low, yet. The players are coming, there is a good job being done in that regard, it’s time to be more than an NFL training camp and give them something to remember about their college football playing days around here, in Raleigh.

There are many more parallels that come to mind about the two programs, but that’s enough of a novel for now. The two factors that absolutely shape the quality of both programs are one, the very top, the attitude of the administration, and two, at very bottom, the expectations of the common fan. Those two either totally deny, or feast off one another, everyone else in between, just falls into place as those two dictate.

Getting way too deep AGAIN, I should probably just sit back, shut up, take a 13 point win over App State for for just what it was, a win ya…hoo, and wait. Nothing bowl appearance maybe, one and done in the NCAA Bball tourney, it’s all a fact of life.

  14. TomA 09/06/2006 at 9:00 PM #

Personally the fact that we are talking with such passion about a game with a smaller school like Akron shows that NCSU football is moving in the right direction, especially fan support wise. Growing up I remember when I was at West Millbrook Jr. High we could actually go to the office and there would be a box where you could get 2 NCSU football tickets together free. Of course the tickets were for one of the few two games of the season such as ASU or Western Carolina but the point is even giving away tickets there would be areas of empty stands even during ACC games. Now its heck trying to get tickets to a game at CF Stadium no matter who is coming in. It wasn’t so long ago that many fans would just accept what would happen (bad season or good) and deal with it. Do I think that there is much room for improvement both in schedule and team performance/coaching? Yes…but we should be more constructive in how we approach the situation. NCSU, I honestly believe, is building something very good here in football There will be up and down years right now because we are not a football factory that just reloads every season…but I think there may come a time where we just might be. Be fair in the criticism but don’t be so critical that you miss what is beginning here. Never forget to enjoy the fun of a college game!

  15. packpigskinfan23 09/06/2006 at 9:22 PM #

redfred~ you are right on with the parralles of the bb program and fb… I think the passion and character of Amato and his group gives us as fans more faith in him however…

Tom~ they really gave tickets away?! jeezs… I walked to CF this weekend from Gorman(half hour walk), and then stood along Trinity for about an hour and 15 mins this weekend to get one ticket in the vistors fan section.

  16. Wolfpack4ever 09/06/2006 at 10:01 PM #

redfred2: I don’t think “coaches ready to prove something by silencing their critics on the football field.” is what coaches are concerned about.

“expecting to see a new, and more confident football team” You did see a more confident football team. The only of lack of confidence comes from some posters to this blog who believe that the only way for a football team to have confidence is to pass for 350 yards.

“It’s time to expect a BCS conference team who is developing NFL talent left and right to start proving it on the football field in Carter-Finley.” All the NFL talent was on the D side of the ball and they certainly proved statistically they were outstanding.

“Again, it (football program) eerily parallels the basketball program and the C Simmons situation, but not at all down that low, yet.” Huh? redfred2 or packpigskinfan23 what are you talking about? Our basketball program pre-Sidney was not on the scale with our football program. Stone was a highly recruited QB in HS. Our QB situation, not having an outstanding proven passer, is all that is between us and the predictions of a very good season and high ranking. We are playing the best programs really tight and it is IMNSHO only a matter of time before we will be where Chuck, you and I want it to be.

” or that pressure was coming from within way back when it should have been” Excuse me? Do you really think the Administration and Faculty are concerned about NCSU winning national champianships. Their highest emotion is jealousy over the salaries coaches get vs. faculty. On one hand LF has an apathetic boss (every since the faculty ran MAF off) and on the other hand us, the lunatic fringe. 😉

  17. Astral Rain 09/06/2006 at 10:59 PM #

Here’s the question- how good would App State be on a Div I schedule? I think they’d be a 2-6 team in a major conference. 1 win against the minnow, and stealing 1 somewhere else. So, while it’s not bad competition- is it really any worse then scheduling, say, Arkansas State?

  18. redfred2 09/07/2006 at 8:20 AM #

“There will be up and down years right now because we are not a football factory that just reloads every season…but I think there may come a time where we just might be.”

Tom A- Trying to stay convinced of those very same things myself. I don’t know, when there was a decided imbalance for the offense early on(namely P Rivers) vs the defense most recently, the coaching philosophy seemed to be go with it, ride it until it’s legs fall off, we’re putting all of our emphasis and all of our eggs in that one basket. Now we have some balance on both sides of the ball. All they need to work on is a little more of it on offense, not even a 75/25 split, but at least some evidence to show other teams that a slight ability is there. Maybe it’s decided already, run the ball 95% of the time, do or die?

Don’t take me for a total malcontent, I will be enjoying watching to see as it all unfolds this season.

packpigskinfan23- I think you already know I draw no parallels with CA and HS whatsoever, NONE. It just seems like an overall pattern of coaches settling for less than what they had originally intended when they started their jobs. Especially after being involved in that mundane environment after a while. Lots of pats on each other’s backs, saying it’s OK, it’s alright, we’re with you all of the way and we’re the only ones that matter, remember? I’m sure Amato has had to play politics with administration more than usual for a coach with all of the facility upgrades going on, but I do not think Lowe will be joining that fraternity, hope not anyway.

Wolfpack4ever- Silencing the critics is exactly what the coaching staff needs to be doing now. Older fans and relatives aren’t the only ones watching this stuff you know. That is, if we schedule opponents worthy of television coverage, and the media is definitely not helping our cause especially recruiting wise. But you are right to a slight degree, silencing their critics is not what the coaches need to be “worrying” about, doing their jobs and improving the ENTIRE football team while beating one or two lesser programs convincingly, would do all of that for them.

I do agree with you on one thing in particular, there is not a critic or anyone willing to stand up and say, enough is enough, anywhere among the administration. They are the most politically correct clan of self preserving insiders anywhere around. Right there in the administrative offices is where the all the major stumbling blocks have evolved for NCSU athletics. It’s not the lunatic fans, the media, or any other outside influences. NC State is limited only by the people now in place who have lesser ideals than what us older folks know is proven, and what it is easily capable of.

  19. VaWolf82 09/07/2006 at 9:06 AM #

Now we have some balance on both sides of the ball.

State won’t have balance until it has quality QB play. I haven’t seen any for a while….have you?

  20. packpigskinfan23 09/07/2006 at 9:31 AM #

WolfPack4Ever~ I think the parallels me and redfred are discusing are the way that both sports teams were in a bad place, these coaches(CA and HS) were brought in to rise us up to the elite and all they have done(so far in Amatos case) is have us hover at the peak of medioricy(sp?)… 5 bowl in 6 years… 5 straight NCAA appearences… one of those bowls was a really good one… the rest not so much. One of those years we made it to the S16… the rest, we didnt. Yet we are pushing out player to the pros like crazy. We all hope that Amato is no comfortable making it to the CarCare Bowl every year… and we have some faith in him. As far as Sendek, he WAS comfortable as long as he made the NCAA Tourney. We all see how that worked out.

btw- I also hate to make it sound like I am comparing Amato to Sendek… I am not. I am comparing the situations of the programs.

  21. Mike 09/07/2006 at 10:02 AM #

I have posted several blogs the last few days and want to clarify my position. I bleed red as much as anyone, and I have complained about 36 passing yards. I am not saying we have to pass for 350 to be happy. I am simply saying I pleased with a win, pleased with the coaching staff for exectuing their game plan to prefection (or so it seems), BUT I am concerned based on the results.

Coach K continually says he does things early in the season that may not be successful immediately, but they build for the long term. It might even be good to lose a game early in the season (and he does not mean tanking a game) to establish learning points the players remember. If they squeak by and win by a couple points, the teaching moment may not have the clout as it would with a loss.

My point is this: We need to work on our passing game to build for the future, whether Stone, Evans, Burke or whoever. I am 100% behind Stone. Stone was a great HS QB and can be a good college QB. In order to be a good college QB, he needs to get the confidence and reps in game situations, which we could have done Saturday.

Not sure who posted this and my apologies to the poster, but I heard the same comments from Steve Logan – that the #2 guy has to get meaningful time in a game, not just mop up time. Why? You never know when he will be thrown into the game for injury or whatever. The #2 guy gets plenty of work in practice, but we all know practice is not game speed or game pressure. While Stone is #1, he does not have a lot of experience, and we need to get him that same experience and confidence.

  22. redfred2 09/07/2006 at 10:33 AM #

    Mike

I have posted similar. I guess all of my frustration stems from the attitude of, “let’s just do enough to win the game” or “we won didn’t we” with no regard for the future in this season alone, or those of the following years.

We beat Appalachian State with one QB who only had 36 yards passing. It’s an accomplishment for the team, and everyone can take personal pride in it, that is possibly with the exception the most important cog on the field, the quarterback.

The great running backs may be hampering Stone’s development. I think he can play the game, he just needs to be forced further and further on out of his comfort zone, and the coaches need to show their confidence in him on game day, through play calling.

Force him to throw, allow him some mistakes right now. It will only benfit in the long run.

  23. class of 74 09/07/2006 at 10:42 AM #

Until we can test a quality defense both with the pass and the run we don’t have a balanced offense. It doesn’t matter if we pass for 36 yards or 536 yards, we have to make the opponent respect our ability to pass! Otherwise this will be another disappointing season of lost opportunities.

  24. yannes 09/07/2006 at 11:41 AM #

    Tom:
I grew up in Raleigh, too and remember getting free tickets to games from all sorts of places. My parents are big FSU fans so we would often get tickets as “gifts” from friends and relatives for those games, too. Ten years ago the seats were no where near being filled when FSU came to town. Who would want to go to a game where your team is set to lose 53-3?

Obviously now I cannot find tickets for free from friends and family and there isn’t a free seat in the house when FSU comes around. This program has come a long way in a short time.

Damn if some of you must wake up everyday bound and determine to find something to cry about. What miserable, gloom and doom spirits many of you have.
