Amato Plants Foot in Mouth…Again

Before moving onto semi-serious business, make sure you read Cardiff Giant’s interview with Tommy Hunt. Priceless stuff.

No doubt most of you have read about Chuck Amato’s latest testy exchange with the media. And in all fairness, it does seem like there was a certain amount of “badgering” involved. Still, what in God’s name could ever cause a sane adult to say the following, after NC State lost to a MAC school for the first time in over 30 years:

“They’re in a conference that allows non-qualifiers in school,” Amato said during his weekly news conference. “Non-qualifiers. Do y’all need to look that one up to write your stories?… Do you know what kind of players non-qualifiers are, usually? They’re inversely proportional to what their grade-point average is. They can make a big difference.”

The natural, inevitable reaction is to note that Amato is seemingly making a defensive, nonsense excuse. The myriad advantages NC State enjoys as a “flagship” public institution with a large alumni/booster base, nice facilities, and ACC conference affiliation outweigh any admissions advantage Akron might have by a factor of, say, 20. The fact that NC State did not have to pledge a return visit in order to get the Zips to play in Carter-Finley let’s you know where the balance of power stands between the two programs. An obvious PR hit, and a one-day story.

But beyond the obvious, Chuck Amato has also opened himself up to attacks like this one from Dave Glenn. Excerpt:

“Here’s the irony: The way Amato complained about Akron’s academic standards is EXACTLY the way other ACC coaches privately have complained about the low academic bar N.C. State has adopted for its own football program ever since Amato arrived from Florida State. The Seminoles long have been known for their bottom-of-the-barrel approach to academics, and Amato adopted Bobby Bowden’s blueprint — academically and otherwise — when he took over the Wolfpack.”

So, in his trademark, belligerent manner, Chuck Amato managed to get 48 hours of media coverage for NC State – as both a whiner and an academic doormat. What is it going to take for Amato to develop some humility and professionalism? If you show that you’ll let sportswriters get under your skin, it’s like putting blood in the water. Right or wrong, he needs to accept and understand the reality of his situation, and act accordingly.

I’m convinced Chuck is trying to get himself fired. There is no other logical explanation. This guy is a fraud. He’s an embarrassment to us all.

Noah: Isn’t the NQ bar uniform? Aren’t exceptions a thing of the past? Nobody can sign any NQs. So Glenn counts up NQs we didn’t enroll and uses that against us?

This is like State fans complaining about someone majoring in African-American studies. As though “Speech Communications is any different.

    [/quote]

State has a new AA studies major IIRC.

I’ve emailed with Glenn before, nicely, and IMO the guy has an agenda. But if you don’t think he does I think that’s super.

I am a believer in BOBBY KNIGHT. Everybody knows it. He has embarrassed me, himself, and everyone around him a time or two. But not like that, not trashing a bunch of kids who just beat him.

I’m not upset or going to hold it against Amato. He needs to just fess up and come clean by saying, ONE TIME, I SUCKED, WE SUCKED, BIG TIME FOR 3/4 OF THE GAME ON SATURDAY. NO excuses, no nothing. Just say when you execute that poorly you leave yourself wide open for such as this, and that the officials shouldn’t have ever had an opportunity to determine the outcome of the game.

Time for an open letter from Lee Fowler?

  5. packpigskinfan23 09/12/2006 at 5:25 PM #

    ^hahaha sounds like it!

Let’s count the excuses offered by Chuck Amato as to his team lost this time:

    1. “They’re in a conference that allows non-qualifiers in school,”
    2. “We’ve won a lot of games around here,” Amato said. “Some people need to be reminded of that.”
    3. “We just got the facilities,” Amato said. “These facilities just got built. They’ve not been here for 20 years.”

Thank God for Sidney – so far he’s shown himself to be much better than Amato or Sendek w/ the media. Amato is too emotional and Sendek was to guarded. However, I guarantee the media loves interviewing Amato when he’s like this – “Hey, let’s watch this guy who we hate melt down and lose it!”

What is wrong w/ manning up and saying, “You know, I was outcoached. They have good players and everything, but I could have done better. We used a trick play, we lost a yard. They used a trick play, and gained 20 yards. When we needed a yard, we got stopped. When they needed a yard, well, it was called a TD. But it’s my fault for even allowing us in that position.” Look at Gruden’s comments then look at Amato’s – a world of difference there.

When a coach is not winning enough what the do off the field or court can play a role in them keeping their job. Sendek was able to stay on because he had no issues off the court.

On the other hand Matt Doherty had a host of off the court problems and he got a quick ax.

Right now I would say Amato is much closer to the Doherty end of the scale which makes his seat hotter than it would normally be.

joe – You’re darn right. His behavior has managed to alienate the folks who are usually the staunchest allies of coaches in college sports – the media.

We really need to beat Southern Miss or I’m afraid we’ll see even worse behavior.

  9. redfred2 09/12/2006 at 6:00 PM #

Where does the defensive posturing come from. Sendek was about as frightening (and enlighting) as a piece of wet melba toast when speaking to the media, but let a Wolfpack fan say something, and it’s straight to the moon. Amato doesn’t seem to adept at handling either, he’s defensive 360*.

I’d say just take an honest look at your own game films, then you can get totally pissed and aim it in the right direction.

  10. Cardiff Giant 09/12/2006 at 6:00 PM #

^ I agree. If he comes home from Southern Miss with an L, Katie bar the door.

  11. Woof Wolf 09/12/2006 at 6:04 PM #

After reading this post I just went back and watched the whole presser. I had started watching it earlier but stopped before it got to the bad part because Chuck’s voice. Without repeating some of the things that have already been said, I thought it was pretty bad.

After seeing Chuck’s performance and reading all the whinimg on this site and other places about the call on the last play and how the ACC referees and their big bad bosses are always picking on us. it’s hard to be proud of being a State fan right now.

This is a public forum. What we say on here is read by a lot of people who are not State fans and what we say helps form their opinon of us and our school. I agree with most of the negative things said here about the coach. Maybe we should expect as much from ourselves as we do from our coaches.

  12. Cardiff Giant 09/12/2006 at 6:08 PM #

^ I recognize your good intentions, but the best way to keep idiotic statements about our coach circulating is not for us to keep mum about them, but for the coach to stop saying idiotic things.

Chuck could use a dose of humility and common sense. I’m not off the bandwagon, but the ride’s getting rough without a shock absorber. In the Charlotte Observer this morning Joe Paterno was quoted on P State loss to ND as saying something to the effect of “we need to go to work and keep our mouths shut”. Win or lose, there’s a class approach from an all-timer. Someone commented earlier about the cartoon voice. I’m not sure, but isn’t that the ventriloquist (Fowler perhaps) working the Chuckster from behind? However, picking on the Press from an NC State location is asking to be beaten. The honest answers are that we have talent, better in some positions than others like most teams. We need to work with what we have. The manager needs to learn some technique and skill, on and off the field, to maximize that talent. Even with that, it’s still questionable if a great season ever had a chance to materialize, given the other pieces of the conference puzzle. Good coaches stumble along and exist even if whining and crying all the time. Great coaches find a way to get it done and play above themselves. Press conferences like that will help keep Chuck among the former I’m afraid.

  14. Cardiff Giant 09/12/2006 at 6:13 PM #

Now his asslike braying has made ESPN, and it makes us look even worse, containing as it does this little gem:

“According to the latest figures, the Observer reported, Akron’s graduation success rate is 60 percent; NC State’s is 50 percent. “

  15. packpigskinfan23 09/12/2006 at 6:17 PM #

agreed to both Cardiff and WoofWolf~ but I think a lot of State’s bad rep is passed down from fans who like to whine too much. What happened to Sendek is already starting with Amato… what happens when Sid gets 2 or even 3 loosing seasons in a row? I hope that dosnt happen, but it is likely. Are WE(as fans) going to run him off as well? Amato needs to learn to keep his mouth shut… I think we all can agree on that. But sometimes I think we need to learn to “keep it all in the family” if you know what I mean.

  16. Woof Wolf 09/12/2006 at 6:23 PM #

I wasn’t referring to comments about the coach. I’m concerned about how much some of us whine about how we always get picked on by the officials, the media and everyone.

I think we and the coaches should recognize and accept our short comings and work to correct them instead of blaming everyone else.

I agree that we should talk about and to each other, but let’s stopping acting like the whole world is out to do us in. What’s wrong and what’s with our athletic prograns is our doing.

  17. Mookie 09/12/2006 at 6:28 PM #

The problem with this coming out now is that we have a tough stretch coming up in the next 3-4 games.

“Home” is going to become pretty hostile if we get steamrolled by any of the teams during our upcoming 3 game home stretch…BC, FSU, and Wake.

  18. packpigskinfan23 09/12/2006 at 6:39 PM #

Woof- I am talking about our perception to the media in general… weither it be because of coaches/officals/AD/anything… we are turning into the whiners on Tabacco Road.

  19. forst8 09/12/2006 at 6:50 PM #

Maybe many of our fans are just too negative about too many things. For example, saying our bb team is likely to suffer 2 or even 3 “loosing” seasons in a row. Based on what? I would be amazed if that happens. Many Pack fans seem to always take a negative approach and a coach trying to make excuses for a loss against Akron does not help any. I like Chuck and I recognize he has done a lot of good for our University but I hope he does not undo all the good with a mouth which refuses to STFU.

  20. PAPacker 09/12/2006 at 6:51 PM #

I can’t believe Amato is this much of a clown. Having an AD clown is bad enough. I feel like calling Akron myself and apologizing. If someone could get an email address up there I would be for writing and apologizing that Amato has behaved so inappropriately.

Just to clarify for the sake of the Charlotte Observer, graduation rates may or may not have a relationship to a school’s overall quality or its relationship to non-qualifiers. There are a lot of mail order places with 100 percent grad rates.

If some of the thoughts expressed on SFN earlier this year are accurate, then State’s football program may not have great hope for the future. SFN please correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t someone write on here within the last few months that State’s upper administration has little concern for the quality of its AD and his hires? Does this mean that the Wolfpack Club pumping all this money into CF is not matched in its hopes for a strong program by those above Lee Fowler?

  21. PAPacker 09/12/2006 at 6:53 PM #

Noting the inconsistent use of instant replay on a game deciding situation is not whining. As Cardiff said at one point, documenting idiocy and inconsistency is a way to keep it from spreading. I think SFN does a good job of that.

  22. packpigskinfan23 09/12/2006 at 6:55 PM #

frost8~ I agree with you, and I assure you that I am not one of those negative fans. I was happy with the win against App St, I was one to (at first) say how tough a lose like the one to Akron was, and not blame anyone. The 2-3 losing seasons thing was just an example…

  23. packpigskinfan23 09/12/2006 at 7:00 PM #

PAPacker- I am referring to ALL aspects of State fans picking apart everything that happens in our Athletic Dept and whining about our coaches and how “horrible” our QB is, and how bad our last coach was, and how disturbing our coach search was, and who’s fault it was…

sometimes I just feel we need to not allow these things to get so much media by not making so much of a deal about them. Of course Amato did this to himself… its just my thoughts on what we can do to help our image out.

  24. Woof Wolf 09/12/2006 at 7:10 PM #

    Pigskin: I agree.

  25. BladenWolf 09/12/2006 at 7:43 PM #

All Amato has to do is shut up and start focusing on coaching. Winning the games we should win and pulling off an upset or two will stop the negative press. Anything else reveals who he really is.
