There is a lesson here that goes far beyond Herb Sendek. Some of us old timers learned in the late 60’s that if you keep up the pressure long enough you will get the majority on to your side, if nothing more than to stop the internal fighting. All the whinny ass kissers who were posting things 5 years ago like ” Oh we need to let the administration do what they think is right….they know better than us…just accept where we are…its not too bad. ” WRONG !!! You keep up the pressure and as V told us on his death bed ” Don’t give up…dont ever give up” My sincere thanks to Mr Thomas Burleson who saved our ass in 1974 and just saved it again in 2006. All the other players took the easy way out and kept their mouths shut, but Thommy took a stand. I’m sure it has been uncomfortable for him. But ,he stood up and accepted the leadership mantle by being so openly public. Burleson – you are the man ! Next year, when I see you in the stands, on the jumbotron, you will get a standing “O” from me !

Sooooo… glad this was not an April fool’s joke!!!
I hope to be the first in line to purchase “new era” tickets on MONDAY!!!!

Big big props to Tommy Burleson. Without his public criticism I don’t know if this happens.

Agreed that this is the best, least costly way to end it all. And sure, I wish him and his family health, happiness, yada yada. But forgive me if I can’t get on the “thanks for the memories” train. He’s been a bitter, stubborn, unmoving, unadaptable, arrogant, accountability-dodging, pansy- scheduling, non-ref working, moneygrubbing, psychobabbling, lead-blowing, end-of-game bungling, fan criticizing, leach protected by Lee Fowler. Yes, we are better off than when Less was here. But couldn’t Curious George have gotten us to a better place than Less with our arena, tradition, fans, etc. after ten freaking years? Sorry, I’m not there yet; I’d have been in a much more Welcome Wagon mood after year 5 if he’d left. Ecstatic to see him go and hope Lee Fowler’s right behind him. And may ASU get to experience the thrilling highs we’ve all experienced and wonder what he’s doing and saying and what the heck kind of offense he runs and players he recruits. Let’s see – in the year 2016, ASU will be about 2-22 against Arizona. Have fun Sun Devils!!!

Now if LF doesn’t bungle the new hire, let’s see what we are really capable of.

Astral-Kennedy took the job at Ole Miss. Xavier coach Sean Miller is one that I expect will get some attention.

  9. PACDADDY 04/01/2006 at 10:14 PM #

I feel sad and relieved at same time..weird feeling…anyway…I hope we get a BIGTIME coach…otherwise, we may have taken a step back. We’ll see. Go Pack!

My favorites…no particular order…Odom would be last

    Calipari
    Barnes
    Mcmillan(if possible)
    Montgomery
    Pitino
    Lavin
    Odom(i hope not)
    Wright
    L Brown(short term of course)
    Lowe(didn’t he finish school?)
    Tubby Smith
    L Davis
    B Knight

Who are the mid major guys that we might gamble on?

    Anyone else?

Herb will be successful in the black hole of ASU…mark it down

“Our long (Wolfpack) national nightmare is over.”

Pardon me for playing devil’s advocate, but I’m not chalking this up as a great thing yet.

    A. Herb’s losses to the rest of the Big 4 have, understandably, overshadowed any success he had at State. That’s fine, but many delusional fans seem to think that past glory entitles us to .500 or better ball vs. Duke and Carolina. A stat I’d be interested in seeing is what coaches out there who has gone up against the Blues at least 20 times over the past decade has as a better winning percentage than Sendek did against them? The losses frustrated me, too, but NOBODY has beaten these teams consistently over the last 10 years that I can think of, with the possible exception of Gary Williams.

    B. The coaching search is still going to be handled by an absolute, totally inept BOOB. He didn’t care what any of us thought when Sendek was here. Why in the world do you think he’s going to care what you think of a new hire?

    C. Whether you like it or not, the job has lost some appeal over the past month. Do a Google news search on Sendek and read all of the articles that have appeared nationwide on coaches mentioning how lousily Herb was treated here by the fanbase. When things like this are printed around the country – away from ACC land – the fanbase appears to be idiotic. Non-ACC followers see 20-win seasons, upper-echelon conference finishes, NCAA tourney bids, and don’t understand what we’re bitching about. Plus, whether you like him or not, Herb is a good guy who does things right. He’s got a lot of friends and people respect him, and that does count for something.

    D. Who’s going to transfer? Which recruits are going to back away now? What players that remain will successfully translate into a new coach’s (presumably) different system?

    E. What coach is going to see this as a dream job when the most important accomplishment BY FAR appears to be that he MUST consistently defeat TWO nearby Hall of Fame coaches year in and year out? Every single Duke game this year was televised, and I believe all but maybe three were on national tv. UNC annually ranks among THE most recognized and high-selling brands in sports marketing. Carolina has what many believe to be the best recruiting class in college basketball history coming in next year. And you guys really think Calipari is going to say, “Gee, I think I’ll leave Memphis, where I’m the only game in town and I’m treated like a god and have a full tank waiting for me next year, so that I can go be the third wheel right down the road from two national powerhouses that I’m going to have to beat every year because my other 18 to 20 wins won’t matter otherwise.” Rick Barnes? Do you really think he’ll come to a school that he thinks shafted his protege and friend? Bobby Knight? Are you freakin’ serious? Bobby Knight and Lee Fowler. Are you freakin’ serious? And besides, what has Knight done in the last decade besides become a parody of himself? Wittenburg? I like the thinking there, but has he really done grand things so far? McMillian I like too, but how often do NBA coaches go back to college? Don’t be surprised to see Foul-er go after the ex Seton Hall or Rutgers coaches, since we have a recruiting presence in Jersey. Or Dave Odom, since he has an NIT dynasty and ties to the area. I’m dead serious here. That’s why I’m not excited yet.

Fellow pack-men, I hear what you’re saying, and I’m there with you, but considering the competition, the coaching moves that have already occurred, and the goofballs we have running the show, Herb may be laughing all the way to the bank. I’ve got $20 that says Fowler hires a relative unknown or a current assistant. I think we’ve public-relationed ourselves out of an all-star name. Let’s hold off on the high-fiving right now, we’re at a very crucial juncture where things could easily go south again in a hurry. And as we’ve seen, when that happens it’s not easy to turn it around.

Fasten your seatbelts – we ain’t out of the turbulence yet.

  11. SaccoV 04/01/2006 at 10:22 PM #

The rough patch has begun as the light-minded athletics department searches for a new basketball coach. I’ve been waiting for this moment for some time, and I think we should all take a moment to congratulate Herb for accepting the job. He’ll take Arizona State to the tournament and I think they have found the coach they needed as well. Once that fleeting moment is over, please celebrate in the manner best suited to your environment. At least for a few days we have much to be thankful for.

  12. vtpackfan 04/01/2006 at 10:29 PM #

The new rule set by the NCAA’s that a player must be 19 or be one year removed from graduating High School to go pro is going to change the basketball landscape. Getting a coach like a Lowe or McMillan to come in could attract some big names that are only attending college until their eligibility for the NBA comes up. It sounds crass and lacks the classy image Herb had worked to build, but it’s a fact of life. These dozen or so players are going to play somewhere, and an up tempo, pro style attack led by a recognizable NBA figure could be an answer.

  13. Cardiac95 04/01/2006 at 11:03 PM #

    Just…..WOW!!!

  14. TVP 04/01/2006 at 11:06 PM #

    From the N and O

“Asked about the mounting speculation that ASU had offered the job to Sendek, Ivey said, “I have heard absolutely nothing about that.â€? But sources say Sendek had talked with numerous people in the last few days, including Wolfpack Club officials. Part of those discussions dealt with the degree of support he has from rank-and-file Wolfpack club members.”

The pressure worked. Despite what the Bob Kennels of the world think, the common WC member’s complaints did register.

  15. MadWolf92 04/01/2006 at 11:35 PM #

    Yes, the pressure worked.

I only hope it hasn’t cost us.

The same Bobby Knight who has done absolutely nothing at Texas Tech?

“The same Bobby Knight who has done absolutely nothing at Texas Tech?”

You got a point there. He ain’t even as much as thode a chair. He ain’t no fun no more.

  18. scott 04/02/2006 at 12:13 AM #

No, Kingfish…Scott S. Knight didn’t do anything in his last decade at IU or a Tx Tech. He’s way past his prime. If we can’t get somebody like Barnes or Calipari, I’d take chances on a younger coach w/ potential. It worked w/Sloan & Valvano, who were both in their 30’s when they were hired, although it didn’t work out so well w/ Herb of course.

  19. old13 04/02/2006 at 12:19 AM #

It’s not yet time for back slapping and congratulating each other. REFOCUS THE PRESSURE TO FOULUP!! The house needs COMPLETE cleaning!

  20. 4NCST8 04/02/2006 at 3:19 AM #

lon, I got to agree with you. I give Herb credit for improving the team from where he got it ten years back. But he was arrogant, stubborn, aloof, condescending, accountability dodging, and definitely psychobabbling. Just a very bad fit for the fanbase of NC State. Here’s to the hope that the next guy knows something about connecting with the fans. Don’t have to agree with the fanbase all the time, but at least act like you care.

mwcric, insightful post. Very intelligent. I agree with a lot of what you said. My fear is the NC State job has lost some of its luster! But if the next man can’t embrace the challenge of coaching the Pack against UNC and Duke, then we don’t need him. Dare to dream and if you fail, we’ll bring on somebody else in five or six years.

Herb got paid a lot of money for no ACC titles over a decade and very few wins against NCSU’s two biggest rivals. Who got the better end of that deal? Herb, of course. Now I know some of the criticism was mean and undeserved. But if Herb came into the State job ten years ago, naive enough to think he could slide by with little success against Duke and UNC and no ACC titles, then he was just flat out stupid, despite that 3.95 at Carnegie-Mellon.

It’s a great, great day for NC State! I wish nothing bad on Sendek right now, but he was not the right man for NC State. That was apparent to me near the end of year four and definitely the case after year five.

Sendek was a decent coach (a 5-6 on a scale of 1-10), but he will never be great. Won’t overtake UCLA and Arizona. If he did, it would be a shock. Arizona State is not a school with two national titles in basketball.

Don’t cry for Herb. He leaves NC State with millions of dollars, despite giving the school no banners in the rafters. I don’t.

First of all thanks must be given to the following: Tommy Burleson (for speaking so boldly and honestly), WTSB and Taylor Zarzour (for having Tommy on the radio for the two crucial interviews), Carlton Tudor (for his recent conversion to printing why Herb should leave), the many callers to local radio shows who gave Herb and the HSSS’ers a lashing, the fan at the ACC who got in a shouting match with Herb and finally to SFN for persistently presenting the facts and never waivering. Thank you all for your diligence and your support of a cause that was worthy. And thank you Herb for finally seeing the light and doing the proper thing.

Persistence pays off, and now we can move on to finding someone who is truly a force we can unite behind and restore the glory that once was Wolfpack basketball! Thanks to all.

The same Bobby Knight who has done absolutely nothing at Texas Tech?

Well…I don’t want Bobby Knight…but, that is as stupid of a comment as could be made. You may want to check on the status of TT’s program when Knight arrived and IMMEDIATELY took them to 4 straight NCAA Tournaments (including a S16).

Listening to Joe Ovies on 850 the buzz and he takes umbrage to the free at last, free at last thank god almighty we are free at last comment. Joe needs to get a grip he’s just hopeless

  24. Mr O 04/02/2006 at 10:59 AM #

I obviously mellowed on the Sendek debate over the last year. I think Herb did a pretty good job the last 5 years and this is a great next step for him and for us. Our program is in a great positon for a coach to come in and win right away and hopefully improve upon what Herb built.

We have a good program to sell to a new coach. Herb deserves some credit for what he is leaving: a team with lots of veterans, a good incoming freshman class, and potentially a marquee PG that likes NC State but just needs the new coach to convince to keep his commitment.

  25. The Original Big Bad Wolf 04/02/2006 at 6:40 PM #

Pacdaddy…I’m not sad, I’m freaking thrilled to see him as far away as possible.

And, yes…I’ll mark down his “success” at ASU. We shall see. I guess it depends on one’s definition of “success.” I don’t think he was successful at State, so why would he start now?
