Fowler Ignoring Calipari (Updated 11:15pm)

StateFansNation has confirmed through four different sources that Lee Fowler has chosen to ignore multiple overtures from representatives of John Calipari regarding the vacant NC State Head Coaching job since the position opened on Saturday night.

Various representatives of Calipari have attempted to contact Athletics Director Lee Fowler – both directly and through various highly-placed NC State contacts – since Saturday night. We have confirmed that multiple phone calls made directly to Fowler as well as other employees of NC State’s Athletics Department have gone unanswered and un-returned this week.

One source connected very closely with Calipari has expressed that “John wants the job very badly.”

People close to the NC State side of the equation speculate some of the following alternatives:
(1) Rick Barnes is in the bag and their is no reason to contact Calipari.
(2) Fowler has become obsessed with landing Barnes and is failing to manage other facets of the potential search.
(3) Fowler is trying to hide behind the fact that over a decade ago that UMass’ Marcus Camby admitted to accepting money from an agent.

We can’t imagine the outrage within the NC State community if Fowler ultimately CHOOSES to hire coach with less than Calipari now that Rick Barnes has spurned Fowler’s best pitch. By wins, Calipari has the fifth-best career start in NCAA history through nine, 11 in 12 seasons. Through 12 collegiate seasons, only North Carolina coach Roy Williams, former North Carolina State legend Everett Case, Louisville Hall of Fame coach Denny Crum, and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim have won more games than Calipari. And, he did it all while at lowly UMass and Confernce USA’s Memphis.

Additionally, we can’t imagine the hypocrisy if Lee Fowler would use Camby’s tangential indescretion over a decade ago against Calipari. This is the same Lee Fowler who was an assistant coach on a staff cited for multiple major NCAA infractions at Memphis State in 1980s. Ultimately, the Memphis State scandal led to mass forfeitures of games and the Tigers vacating their 1985 Final Four appearance. Later, Fowler’s former boss (Dana Kirk) was sent to prison for tax evasion.

Some NC State fans have pondered the question, “What if Fowler has been mandated from Oblinger/Board of Trustees that he cannot pursue Calipari?”

Our response to that also takes question form — In light of Lee Fowler’s more-checkered past with the NCAA, how can anyone at NC State veto Calipari on ethics while Lee Fowler runs the entire Athletics Department? The answer is either ignorance or hypocrisy. Either is unacceptable.

We will follow this very closely in the coming days. If Fowler finds a way to strike out without swining on someone like Calipari en route to landing a coach with less stature who cannot excite the NC State fan base, then he might want to consider packing his bags faster than he can sign long term extensions for Wolfpack Sports Marketing without sending them to public bid.

Ironic Twist
How is this for irony — Ten years ago, one of the cleanest, squarest Athletics Directors in the country offered John Calipari a job on which he ultimately passed.

The AD? NC State’s squeaky clean Todd Turner.

That’s right…Mr. Clean deemed Calipari clean enough to work at NC State…yet an Athletics Director with Lee Fowler’s history with the NCAA may not? For more on this stroll down memory lane you can click here.

“Talked to Todd twice,” Calipari said at the star-studded charity golf benefit at Prestonwood Country Club. “N.C. State was an interesting proposition. Great town. N.C. State has great tradition. They’re getting a new [arena]. Their fans want to win in the worst way. The ACC is such a great league.”

Ironic Twist, II
Ten years ago, one of our authors (Jeff) reported Turner’s conversations with John Calipari in his email newsletter, “The InfoPack”. Jeff was pushing Calipari for the State job before it ever opened. Jeff was criticized for not knowing what he was talking about until the original N&O article that we linked was published and corroborated his reporting. Kind of ironic in its own right considering some of the attacks that we’ve seen on some message board posts regarding our work here.

To be a part of the University of Memphis Basketball team you must be committed to winning a national title. To wage that war, we must live together, eat together, study together, condition and play together.

No one can be held to a lower standard! We all must reach the same bar. The more we sacrifice for each other the harder it will be to surrender during the season!

We are screwed beyond belief. We’ll get whatever unqualified jackass that Lee Fowler feels kinship with.

I knew we should have went for Calipari first, damn it.

Take a chill pill guys Barnes was going to be Coach at Virgina and changed his mind at the last minute as well. The Barnes couldn’t be reached for comment is very significant. COME HOME RICK

Just watched Calipari role playing a recruiting situation with John Sally on the Greatest Damn Sportshow. He must be lobbying for a job. It was a hoot!

Earlier today when I read that the George Mason coach “pulled out” of the Seton Hall search I had a really strange feeling… For whatever reason the thing that immediately came to my mind was that he was the second choice and was informed of RB’s decision… thus his decision to “pull out”.

All afternoon I was hopeful that my gut was wrong… but now I am concerned…

“Maybe the Chancellor doesn’t like Calipari? He clearly has veto power over who they talk to.

How can anyone at NC State veto Calipari on ethics while Lee Fowler runs the entire Athletics Department? Either ignorance or hypocrisy. Either one is unacceptable.

*Hopefully the attention on Barnes worked as a smokescreen and one of the ‘other 10’ will be landed soon.*

WTNY — that’s even more optimistic than us saying “WTNY” every year. Dammit.

And if PackPride83 is right about the George Mason coach being choice #2 … never mind. I don’t even want to think about it. Would that not be totally GOOBERING typical? *Hay y’all lookit this ole fart having hissef one good season. Let’s hire ‘im!*

  8. PackisBack 04/06/2006 at 9:53 PM #

Don’t know why you wouldn’t hedge you bets and at least talk to Calipari. He can coach!

  9. Cardiff Giant 04/06/2006 at 10:07 PM #

If he hires that old man from George Mason, that’s it. I won’t rest until Fowler is gone from NC State.

I am a Memphis basketball fan and SEC fan as well. I have lived in Memphis a long time and knew Lee Fowler when he was an assistant coach and assistant athletic director at Memphis. I know very little about what has happened with NC State, but I can tell you that Lee is a class act with outstanding character. I trust he will get you guys a first class coach. As far as Coach Cal, I am certainly not saying he would not be interested in the NC State job…who wouldn’t? But, he has a unique situation at Memphis. He can recruit nationally, is working on playing a national schedule and have little or no competition in Conf USA, so he is automatic bid to NCAA tournament. Plus, he plays in FedEx Forum, the new NBA arena, so these kids play in an NBA arena and in front of Jerry West every home game. Plus, exposure to NBA teams and players who come into Memphis. These kids are treated as heros locally since they are the only game in town, besides the Grizzles. I am sure Lee knows this and may feel Cal won’t come. Good luck guys, I can’t imagine a better job than NC St. but in Memphis, we hope Cal stays.

What are the realistic chances that we call him back?

  12. VaWolf82 04/06/2006 at 10:29 PM #

but in Memphis, we hope Cal stays.

And I’m sure that everyone here understands that.

It’s hard to know who is driving the bus right now…but I find it hard to believe that Fowler is driving solo. However, he will be the one out front if or when it all hits the fan.

Side note, if you get a chance to visit the San Diego zoo…..the hippo exhibit has a below ground viewing area where you can see above and below the water. The last time I was there, I got to witness that particular cliche illustrated against the viewing pane. Everyone there just busted out laughing….we all were thinking the exact same thing.

Well that ‘s enough feces for one night…Time for old men to go to bed. Someone post some good news by the time I get up tomorrow.

If Calipari is concerned only about winning games, he WON’T come to State. He’ll win alot more game at Memphis — albeit, meaningless games, but he’d win alot more in C-USA than in the ACC. You don’t become a top notch coach by coaching in C-USA, though. I still haven’t seen ANYTHING concrete about RB saying NO.

  14. DannyD 04/06/2006 at 10:34 PM #

This is why we were screwed if Herb left. We can’t depend on Fowler to get this right.

  15. beowolf 04/06/2006 at 10:34 PM #

None of this shit matters if the Powers That Be aren’t interested.

  16. jbpackfan 04/06/2006 at 10:35 PM #

Wolf’s Eye- you wont see much else, because there were no official talks or an offer; Its like it never happened

Just saw Calipari on “Best D… Sports Show ”

Wonder when the new ASU coach is scheduled ….?

How reliable is the WRAL story? Not other news source that I can find has confirmed their story.

Quote from Fowler in the WRAL story:

“I read the e-mails. I know we want to beat Carolina. We want to be at Duke. And it’s amazing to me that fans wouldn’t know that we don’t wake up every morning trying to figure out how to do that,” Fowler told Tony Hanes. “And wanting to do that — because /c that’s part of our fabric — especially UNC. So, ACC Championships, Final Fours — we heard all that and we’re looking for somebody that can take us there.”

  19. JeremyHyatt 04/06/2006 at 10:56 PM #

I just watched the video from wral, it say confirmed with 4 sources…

  20. Kevin 04/06/2006 at 11:00 PM #

ESPN is running a headline suggesting that John Brady (LSU coach) is possibly being recruited by NC STATE. Any info on this?

  21. JeremyHyatt 04/06/2006 at 11:09 PM #

    interesting article:
    http://www.wilmingtonstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060405/NEWS/60405004/1005/FRONTPAGE

“He [Calipari] left behind a mess at UMass, resulting in the program forfeiting that regional championship. In his six seasons at Memphis, rumors have surfaced of potentially similar problems.”

“Sources close to N.C. State say athletic director Lee Fowler is “highly concernedâ€? about Calipari’s reputation, especially considering former coach Herb Sendek ran one of the cleanest programs in the nation and was a reason some prominent Wolfpack boosters tried talking Sendek into remaining at State.”

If Fowler if being called off of Calipari, this may obviously be the reason. Do we really have to pick betwen success with violations or mediocrity with excellent academics? How does Coach K and Ol’ Roy manage to run a top program without cheating?

  22. Sooner Among The Pack 04/06/2006 at 11:11 PM #

It’s Andy Katz and he’s a tool. We do not want Larranaga. There was also talk that Brady was at the top of the OU recruiting list today on ESPNEWS. Total garbage.

  23. warren 04/06/2006 at 11:20 PM #

What’s the best way to contact Fowler re: Calipari?

    what’s his email address?

    office phone?

    suggestions….

Mike Davis is now off the board too – new HC at UAB. I think he would have solved a lot of the “image categories” that some of our boosters are apparently interested in. That being said, Calipari’s record with the NCAA isn’t that bad at all and if his reported interest is real and he isn’t named the new head coach of NCSU by next Monday then our administration definately needs a shake-up beyond our recently departed coach.

Also, I am gald we made a run at RB and honor the fact that he made the right decision for himself and family by staying at UT, but I hope that he truly came to terms with the level of support that he will continue to get there. On the day that it was announced that he was staying as the coach the top stories on thier message boards were about a new QB recruit. In truth, short of winning a national title, I don’t think that he will ever be embraced like he would have at State. Also, I’m pretty sure that unless Wake needs a coach in the next 10 years or Lee truly does jack up our new hire, RB won have another opportunity to return to ACC bball in NC.
