Fowler Ignoring Calipari (Updated 11:15pm)

StateFansNation has confirmed through four different sources that Lee Fowler has chosen to ignore multiple overtures from representatives of John Calipari regarding the vacant NC State Head Coaching job since the position opened on Saturday night.

Various representatives of Calipari have attempted to contact Athletics Director Lee Fowler – both directly and through various highly-placed NC State contacts – since Saturday night. We have confirmed that multiple phone calls made directly to Fowler as well as other employees of NC State’s Athletics Department have gone unanswered and un-returned this week.

One source connected very closely with Calipari has expressed that “John wants the job very badly.”

People close to the NC State side of the equation speculate some of the following alternatives:
(1) Rick Barnes is in the bag and their is no reason to contact Calipari.
(2) Fowler has become obsessed with landing Barnes and is failing to manage other facets of the potential search.
(3) Fowler is trying to hide behind the fact that over a decade ago that UMass’ Marcus Camby admitted to accepting money from an agent.

We can’t imagine the outrage within the NC State community if Fowler ultimately CHOOSES to hire coach with less than Calipari now that Rick Barnes has spurned Fowler’s best pitch. By wins, Calipari has the fifth-best career start in NCAA history through nine, 11 in 12 seasons. Through 12 collegiate seasons, only North Carolina coach Roy Williams, former North Carolina State legend Everett Case, Louisville Hall of Fame coach Denny Crum, and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim have won more games than Calipari. And, he did it all while at lowly UMass and Confernce USA’s Memphis.

Additionally, we can’t imagine the hypocrisy if Lee Fowler would use Camby’s tangential indescretion over a decade ago against Calipari. This is the same Lee Fowler who was an assistant coach on a staff cited for multiple major NCAA infractions at Memphis State in 1980s. Ultimately, the Memphis State scandal led to mass forfeitures of games and the Tigers vacating their 1985 Final Four appearance. Later, Fowler’s former boss (Dana Kirk) was sent to prison for tax evasion.

Some NC State fans have pondered the question, “What if Fowler has been mandated from Oblinger/Board of Trustees that he cannot pursue Calipari?”

Our response to that also takes question form — In light of Lee Fowler’s more-checkered past with the NCAA, how can anyone at NC State veto Calipari on ethics while Lee Fowler runs the entire Athletics Department? The answer is either ignorance or hypocrisy. Either is unacceptable.

We will follow this very closely in the coming days. If Fowler finds a way to strike out without swining on someone like Calipari en route to landing a coach with less stature who cannot excite the NC State fan base, then he might want to consider packing his bags faster than he can sign long term extensions for Wolfpack Sports Marketing without sending them to public bid.

Ironic Twist
How is this for irony — Ten years ago, one of the cleanest, squarest Athletics Directors in the country offered John Calipari a job on which he ultimately passed.

The AD? NC State’s squeaky clean Todd Turner.

That’s right…Mr. Clean deemed Calipari clean enough to work at NC State…yet an Athletics Director with Lee Fowler’s history with the NCAA may not? For more on this stroll down memory lane you can click here.

“Talked to Todd twice,” Calipari said at the star-studded charity golf benefit at Prestonwood Country Club. “N.C. State was an interesting proposition. Great town. N.C. State has great tradition. They’re getting a new [arena]. Their fans want to win in the worst way. The ACC is such a great league.”

Ironic Twist, II
Ten years ago, one of our authors (Jeff) reported Turner’s conversations with John Calipari in his email newsletter, “The InfoPack”. Jeff was pushing Calipari for the State job before it ever opened. Jeff was criticized for not knowing what he was talking about until the original N&O article that we linked was published and corroborated his reporting. Kind of ironic in its own right considering some of the attacks that we’ve seen on some message board posts regarding our work here.

One other contrarian position on Calipari (because I do think he would work at NC State):

IMO he is seen as someone who wouldn’t stay for the long term — he may want to return to the NBA.

Perhaps Fowler wants Calipari but has been instructed to skip to the next candidate.

It makes NC State all the more hypocritical that Fowler is good enough to lead our department.

He might want to return to the NBA – or maybe he tried it and learned he was better suited for the college game. I’d take him either way, and my gut says he’d stick here for the long haul.

I don’t see what all the screaming is about….This is great news for NC State. If Calapari really wants to coach at State, then he will still be available if Barnes says no.

You would ignore a $XM in donations in favor of at best a few $100K in donations? Not smart.

  6. packfan 04/06/2006 at 6:51 PM #

Wral reporting Barnes is staying in Texas.. Nice job LEE, now you probably lost Cal too..

  7. Cardiff Giant 04/06/2006 at 6:51 PM #

WTF? HOW CAN HE BE THIS STUPID?????

Wait a minute – we’re talking about Jethro here. Of course he can.

Just heard it too. Oh well, nice try. I guess we will get candidate C, D, E or Z. I just hope they know what a point guard, a center and scorer are unlike our pas coach.

So much for landing a big gun.

Hopefully the attention on Barnes worked as a smokescreen and one of the “other 10” will be landed soon.

  11. SaccoV 04/06/2006 at 7:12 PM #

Has anyone found a Texas-based source to confirm this?

  12. packfan 04/06/2006 at 7:17 PM #

Sacco, they don’t give a damn about Rick in Texas.. You’ll see something in a couple of days..

If we had a shot at Calipari (my No 1. choice, period) and blew it, I will push for Fowlers immediate departure. Promise you.

^^I applaud Statefansnation for always keeping the pressure on Sendek. Sendek took another job. Statefansnation never said Barnes was coming. They said it was not as much of a long shot as some might think. Who knows? Maybe we “force” Sendek out earlier and landing Barnes would have not been as much of an uphill battle.

At any rate, I just hope our hire is a diamond in the rough. Unfiying the fanbase at this time will not occur until he wins game.

Disappointing and now we will hear from the national media that “WE TOLD YOU SO!”

    Cursed, cursed, cursed!

If he hasn’t worked the Calipari side with RB as a smokescreen, he has not done his homework!!

I hope that we haven’t screwed up so badly as to totally mess up our chances with John Calipari. If John has lobbied for a chance to be considered and Murphy and Fowler don’t want to talk to him for whatever reason, then we have a bunch of ignorant, no good, clueless leaders who exhibit grandiose amounts of stupidity!!!

Calipari . . . I’d love it. He’s be easy for all the Carolina homers to hate! He’d be a great recruiter. And he would have the youth, brains, and vigor to occasionally beat Roy and K.

My gut tells me Calipari won’t be coming for some reason.

Why do our leaders always have to fuck up? The only way they’d get out of this is if it was fairly clear that Barnes, Cal, and Wright ALL SAID, “NO!”

Otherwise, they’re responsible for doing a lousy coaching search job!

  17. Wolf's Eye 04/06/2006 at 7:22 PM #

On the other hand, I’d rather hire a mid-major up and comer who says Yes before we get turned down by RB, Cali, others — that would not look good for our Program!

“WTF? HOW CAN HE BE THIS STUPID?????

Wait a minute – we’re talking about Jethro here. Of course he can.”

Are you shocked? You’ve seen how’s managed both of his revenue sports. I’ve always thought our fans were way off-base demanding the resignation of Herb under our current leadership, since so few had confidence in LF.

Luckily, this still isn’t over. Even if he doesn’t get Calipari, there’s still a chance we can bag a great coach, but for now, it doesn’t look like the MSM will be eating crow- much to my chagrine.

  19. highstick 04/06/2006 at 7:34 PM #

Maybe this is a test for Fowler too and if he can’t “get r done”, then we should replace Jethro with Larry the Cable Guy. Think Lefty might want to make a comeback in the ACC????

  20. db321 04/06/2006 at 7:43 PM #

I agree that Calipari should be talked with. However, the fact that we haven’t talked with him yet, in my opinion, doesn’t mean jack.

The official announcement that Sendek was Arizona State’s new coach wasn’t until Monday afternoon. That’s only three days ago. I would assume that Calipari’s people didn’t call before then, and most likely not until Tuesday. The fact that 48 hours went by shouldn’t be that big of a deal. If it is, then Calipari is a big pussy.

Hopefully Fowler will contact John tonight or tomorrow. However, I have my doubts based on what I’ve heard.

if this proves true, this is the death knell for Lee’s “career” at state. All the fury of the wolfpack nation will have him oustered within a year. bad enough he stuck with herbuffoon, but to maltreat an obviously interested calipari reeks of incompetence.

  22. Joe 04/06/2006 at 7:50 PM #

Maybe the Chancellor doesn’t like Calipari? He clearly has veto power over who they talk to.

  23. TVP 04/06/2006 at 8:04 PM #

couple this with the Barnes news and I feel like I’ve been kicked in the gut.

  24. VaBeachPacker 04/06/2006 at 8:08 PM #

Yeah – I feel about the same TVP

  25. NeverGiveUp 04/06/2006 at 8:14 PM #

If Barnes and JC are out, what other big name is on the list.

I seen good coaches mentioned, but no other “big names”
