Dan Wetzel – John Calipari the Perfect Coach For NC State

LINK.

Favorite excerpt:

That tale, the quintessential John Calipari story, is why he is the perfect coach for North Carolina State, and the Wolfpack know it. It is not because of who he would make happy (State alums), but who he would drive nuts, namely Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams.

That has to be what State really wants รขโ‚ฌโ€œ to be relevant, to be feared, to matter again to its local rivals, Duke and North Carolina. To get that, it has to have a coach who will get under the big two’s skin, wage war in the media, steal recruits and road wins, basically give the Wolfpack both the bark and the bite they’ve lacked.

Keep those fingers crossed!

the guys on 1 and 10 (ESPN) seem to think Memphis will come up with the money to keep him…
    this is no fun!

would it hurt so much to hire an interim coach for this season…i really wouldnt mind putting off greatness for one year than going for mediocrity now

Me too Chuck… started in 1983. What a freshman year I had!

Glenn on 850 just said that Cal is meeting with Memphis people again this afternoon for a last meeting with them. It is expected they will throw more money at him. Will it be enough? We should know tomorrow at the latest.

Let’s call the guys and ask them ourselves what it would take to load up the bus and come to Raleigh

    SFN: Let’s not.

…….the problem is that there has been absolutely nothing coming out of Memphis – either good or bad……..that means to me that there have been no team meetings, etc…..if an announcement comes out of Memphis it can only mean we have been used yet again…..IMHO the best thing that can happen to us right now is for the silence to continue….as fraying to the nerves as that is….

not really, but its his job, he is some editor for the acc paper around here…he is kinda the guru regarding college athletics around here, maybe someone else can give his official title

Dave Glenn is probably theee most connected in the ACC sports reporting field.

    I agree with Tired.

Calipari is probably listening to the counter offer that RC is pitching to him and his assistants. Getting the boosters to support a new financial package (one that the current AD did not want to give until we entered the picture) and getting all the lawyers involved to draft the contracts up takes time.

In the end, Big John will come to Raleigh as he knows his future is much brighter in Raleigh than in Memphis.

Well, at least State is doing their part to raise the standard of living for top level coaches. If I were Jay Wright I would have my hand in the air yelling “choose me next, choose me next, I need a $600,000 raise”.

should i ask if cal if staying?

I went to ESPN and voted like 30 or so times. I just kept deleting my cookies. Everyone here should do the same so we can skew the numbers.

Admins, is there any way you can take those phone numbers off? The last thing we need is a whole bunch of idiots or UNZ fans calling him.

Please let the poor basketball office secretary do her job in peace. ๐Ÿ™‚

basketball office is very generic…she didn’t say memphis basketball office….definitely a good sign!!….
