Dan Wetzel – John Calipari the Perfect Coach For NC State

LINK.

Favorite excerpt:

That tale, the quintessential John Calipari story, is why he is the perfect coach for North Carolina State, and the Wolfpack know it. It is not because of who he would make happy (State alums), but who he would drive nuts, namely Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams.

That has to be what State really wants – to be relevant, to be feared, to matter again to its local rivals, Duke and North Carolina. To get that, it has to have a coach who will get under the big two’s skin, wage war in the media, steal recruits and road wins, basically give the Wolfpack both the bark and the bite they’ve lacked.

Keep those fingers crossed!

I’m going to leave now before you all get me depressed. I was feeling really good after reading that article and I need to try to stay focused. I’m trying to remember the word that Nicholson taught in Anger management. Crap, How am I supposed to stay focused if I can’t focus on the WORD!!!!!

I would love to see Cal come into a press conference wearing a pack pride t-shirt saying ” I am a proud member of the Lunatic Fringe”. That would be awesome.

    play-by-play of the rome interview:
herb draws parallels to lute olsen leaving iowa for arizona.
herb is excited about the possibilities at ASU. says the administration is ready to help his
rome brings up ncsu. asks if he left for a better opp? herb says support was “tremendous”. “unflinching in their support”. “did we have unanimous support after 10 years? heck no.” “time to move forward.”
rome says lots of listeners in raleigh.
rome: “are the expectation in ral unrealistic and is it overinflated?”
herb: “it’s ok to have high expectations. it’s a competitive street corner.” credits UNC/dook. “we made significant and steady progress.” “wish we could’ve done more.”
rome brings up the “grinder” of playing in NC. herb talks about tim duncan, unc, and duke… mentions the win over wake in the early goings over duncan.
herb : “it’s ok to have fans that have high expectations.”
rome brings up new conference, new arena… all the new stuff for herb.
herb talks about a learning curve. gives props to the pac-10. “there’s no easy games in any conference.”
rome mentions recruiting. how do you recruit the pac-10.
herb: “recruiting is recruiting. what they want to know is about you and how you’re going to help them achieve their goals.”
rome brings up sincerity in recruiting. herb talks about trust, honesty.
rome brings up coaching community. “is there any sort of camaraderie?”
herb: “there are friends in the league (ACC). but if you could turn back the pages, our profession has less of that than it did at one point. coaches used to go out after the game together. there is still some collegiality.”
    rome asks how coaches interrelate.
herb says family… competition… mentions great friendships at ncsu. herb says no one is an island during the season. every coach needs someone to offer input during the year.
rome says some coaches are maniacal. how do you have a balance between family life and coaching?
herb : “a man who doesn’t take care of his family is no man at all.” talks about his dad and his daughters…
    rome outro.

interview is over…Herb said nothing negative about NC State…Jim Rome is tho…says we ran him out the door, that he deserved better…Jim, get lost, you have no clue how lackluster we became under herb.

  15. marathonman 04/11/2006 at 2:25 PM #

yea…come back Herb..I need another couple of years to fully understand the complexities of the (it’s not the) Princeton style offense….you put your center at the top of the key…line up around the 3 point line….and wait for the shot clock to run down….right??

Herb just regurgitated the presser he had in Tempe a week ago and Jim Rome threw bombs as he is accustomed to doing. Rome, Doyel, Vitale they are all the same far from the scene and further from the truth!
