Barnes Update – 11:45 am

Dave Glenn is doing a phenomenal job covering the NC State coaching search. A phenomenal job. In fact, he deserves a free plug and hyper-link to his blog and the ACC Area Sports Journal. Additionally, this link to 850 The Buzz is relevant to this entry.

Dave Glenn appeared on 850 AM “The Buzz” this morning. He said the following:

* Barnes has been offered huge money, but it’s all been done through back channels. Fowler has not met directly with Barnes yet. Fowler will only meet directly with Barnes if he knows what his answer is. Texas is trying to rework his contract and will do so.

* Barnes has not told State “no” as of this morning.

* Our offer to Barnes is structured similarly to Pitino’s and Tubby’s contracts. It includes retention bonuses, meaning if you are still here at Year X, you get a huge pot of money at that time. That is how our package is being “styled.” He thinks our “pot” in Year X is $5 million. It would make him one of the top 3-5 paid basketball coaches in the country.

* Glenn thinks we are handling this the right way and have really tugged on his heart strings through back channels. But he still thinks that unless Texas screws it up, he will stay at Texas in the end. He admits that is purely a guess on his part, though.

* He says his sources are Barnes’ proteges, Texas officials, ACC officials, and WPC contacts.

* He is adamant that Fowler had not met face-to-face with Barnes yet.

* Glenn says we have contacted as many as 10 other candidates behind the scenes, but no names.

* Glenn’s source at Texas told him they thought Texas would have had a press conference by now and is surprised at Rick’s level of interest in our job. Lawyers are involved, it is so complicated. Barnes want to see everything in writing.

The following are some comments that we feel comfortable sharing in light of Glenn’s public comments:

* Lee Fowler has NOT met with Rick Barnes in person; Lee Fowler has spoken to Barnes on the phone, as have many with NC State connections.

* Eddie Biedenbach was one of the first Wolfpackers to connect with Barnes. This was both appropriate and the right move as Biedenbach gave Rick Barnes his first college job in the early 1980s at Davidson. Barnes has always held Biedenback in very high regard.

* Lee Fowler is NOT TALKING to almost anyone about his role and his thoughts on the search. This is a very good thing.

* We feel comfortable in sharing that Chris Corchiani also reached out to Rick Barnes (and he may not have been the only other former Wolfpack player). We think that exhibiting this kind interest from old-guard NC State greats is a positive step in emphasizing the fanbase’s unity and the commitment that the entire program has to its future and to Barnes’ ability to unite us all.

* Chris Wright’s mother has indicated to NC State that there is a great chance that her son would remain committed if “certain” coaches were hired at State. Barnes was one of those coaches.

* Glenn’s comments regarding the financial package serve to help explain where some of the wild rumors related to the money State was offering Barnes. The rumors were close on dollar figures, but (of course) wrong on structural issues.

* That back-end, retention structure serves many positive purposes and few negative ones. Not the least of which allows State to present similar/identical “annual compensation” numbers to potential other candidates without bruising their egos by offering them less money.

* Additionally, sources told NBADraft.net yesterday that PJ Tucker will declare to enter the NBA draft a year early just one day after word spread that LaMarcus Aldridge was hiring an agent.

* We have also heard from some folks in Texas’ administration and booster organization that are very nervous behind the scenes about the potential that they could lose Barnes to State.

* Glenn says that State has spoken with at least 10 potential candidates through various channels. It is unclear if Glenn means that State has initiated contact with those candidates or if State has spoken with 10 potential candidates in part because they chose to reach out to us. As we shared with you in a previous entry, this job has created huge buzz amongst many more (prominent) coaches than Lee Fowler ever imagined.

* Representatives for John Calipari expressed interest in the position early in the week. But, there is reason to believe that Calipari’s ego may not allow him to be “second choice”. We hope that State has been prudent in any potentail conversations with Calipari to position the search as having no #1 choice in our initial “gauge interest phase”.

* We have heard that Jay Wright is not a candidate based largely on his wife’s love of Villanova and the area. We have no insight into the impact that an offer of over $1 million dollars would impact those feelings.

* You get to a point where the fear of being “Beamerized” by Barnes makes the pressure on the situation almost unbearable. We hope that State is running parallel conversations with the likes of John Calipari and Billy Gillispie so that hypothetical agreements are in place so the trigger can be pulled very quickly in the event that Barnes is a no go.

Dominos?

* At some point, the pace of this courtship is could have negative implications on Barnes (and NC State). For example, Frank Haith has been mentioned as a top candidate for the Oklahoma job. But, if Barnes leaves for NC State many believe Haith would be the natural replacement (since he was on Barnes’ staff before getting the Miami job 2 years ago). Additionally, Haith has been rumored as NC State’s ultimate “fallback” coach. If Barnes doesn’t take the State job, Haith’s potential to land the job increases.

* Additionally, John Calipari’s name has been mentioned in Oklahoma. He is also a favorite of many Wolfpackers. If Barnes says no to State at the same time that Calipari says yes to Oklahoma, the dominos don’t fall well for NC State.

* IMHO, a doomsday scenario exists where Barnes says no to State, while OU hires Paul Hewitt from GT (a rumor out there) and GT hires John Calipari. Suddenly, the stakes in the ACC are raised even higher. I don’t place a high likelihood on this scenario (especially since Hewitt has a great recruiting class coming in next year).

* The plane tracking has been useless so far. Someone tracked one of Murphy’s planes from Rose Hill to Augusta National this morning, could he be at the Masters Golf Tournament?

Concur on Katz! He know very little about B-Ball – especially Tobacco Road B-Ball! Barnes wants to come back to NC – I’ve lived in Texas and NC – While Austin is the best place in Texas — It’s STILL in Texas! Oh yeah, is his wife from Hickory, too? What years did he play for L-R?

  2. RAW 04/06/2006 at 11:21 AM #

Brady would ok…definitely State would experience some ups ( final 4 ), but also some downs with him ( no tourney in ’01, ’02, ’04 ). But he is Fiery!

C’mon Barnes! Say something before I get fired!

    News break at 12:26 PM:

“Dick Vitale returns to coaching, takes a stab at ACC with NC State”

  4. will 04/06/2006 at 11:23 AM #

what I want to know is what kind of time table we are looking at for an announcement either way

  5. Mr O 04/06/2006 at 11:24 AM #

Depending on how this works out, we could be asking ourselves if it was the wrong move to target Barnes as the first choice.

It would have been reasonable to think it would have been easier to convince Calipari to take the job than Barnes, so maybe you skip Barnes to go for a more certain possibility to not risk bruising Calipari’s ego?

Tough call. I would be fine with Calipari if that is in fact realistic.

  6. Wolf's Eye 04/06/2006 at 11:24 AM #

From Jimmy V to Dickie V – can you imagine? He’ll take Bilas to be an assistant, too!

  7. JimmyVguy 04/06/2006 at 11:26 AM #

    Dear God…that would be horrendous

  8. Wolf's Eye 04/06/2006 at 11:27 AM #

I think it would be easier to convince Barnes – He’s an NC guy who dislikes UNC! I still think about the Dean episode! Texas is definitely a good gig, though. Calipari likes the idea of being a big fish in a small pond (C-USA), but he’d go toe to toe with Roy and K and doesn’t like losing.

the suspense is killing me – as if I am 12 and its Christmas Eve

  10. JeremyHyatt 04/06/2006 at 11:32 AM #

just trying to bring in some humour..

His assistant coaching staff will consist of:

    Ala Abdelnaby
    Charles Shackleford
    Quinn Snyder
JJ Reddick (after he is cut in 2008)
    Chris Corchiani
    Archie Miller

boy am i sleep deprived, end this madness Rick! We all need a good nite’s rest.

Mr.O: I agree completely. Of the two Calipari is definitely the more likely to jump over. Barnes has an awesome job at a wonderful univeristy at Texas. Calipari is at Memphis in C-USA. This would be a definite step up for his profile. Not so for Barnes. Barnes also has home grown talent right in his backyard to recruit. I was actually thinking of starting a thread on PackPride premium asking the question if whether targeting Barnes so hard immediately was a mistake. I’m glad I’m not teh only one thinking this way.

  12. Jason2413 04/06/2006 at 11:36 AM #

And for those tauting the Barnes as an NC native connection, Calipari spent 2 years at UNC-W and his parents live in Charlotte.

  13. EFFFFDuke&Carolina 04/06/2006 at 11:37 AM #

Why are the UT fans seem to not be worried or care if he leaves? On their message boards and blogs they barely discuss it. Are they not worried about losing him or is it the fact that it is a football school and the basketball program takes the backseat?

  14. BJD95 04/06/2006 at 11:38 AM #

O, Jason – I agree. Have been saying the same thing all along.

  15. Mike 04/06/2006 at 11:38 AM #

I hate to say this, but I have to give Fowler some credit here. We all kow Barnes has bee the #1 guy in the media and here, but it is highly possible Lee is talking to Calipari and telling him he is #1 choice. After all, we are the lunatic fringe, what do we know? It is the lunatic fringe calling for Barnes, but Lee could be talking to Cal like he is #1.

Just dont let our prom date get taken by another guy while we decide which girl we want to take.

  16. Mr O 04/06/2006 at 11:39 AM #

    That is good info. Jason.

  17. DC Wolf 04/06/2006 at 11:40 AM #

^Plus, you know how our fanbase goes gaga over Italians. 🙂

  18. Mike 04/06/2006 at 11:41 AM #

As for Texas blogs not talking about Barnes…….it is football season! Why talk about Barnes? It is football season. Spring practice here, but football season in Texas. BB was always be #2 (maybe #3 behind baseball too) in the land of burnt orange. If those ugly unis aren’t enough reason to jump…………

  19. boknows 04/06/2006 at 11:42 AM #

Barnes was in Altanta Wednesday meeting an old player Royal Ivy. Today he is most likely a guest the Master’s Tournament. He loves golf.

Early this morning around 6:34 a privately owned twin engine jet took off from the Kannapolis NC Airport and landed in Augusta shortly thereafter. Can you say “Wendell Murphy?”

Dave Glenn is right about the behind the scenes activity.

  20. Cardiff Giant 04/06/2006 at 11:43 AM #

I agree with Jason and Mr. O re Calipari. I’d love to see him as coach. Barnes too.

  21. booman Group 04/06/2006 at 11:43 AM #

I heard on 850 around 11am that Corchiani, Fowler and Wendell Murphy made a trip to Texas this week; this is according to the caller who of course knows a high ranking WPC member. The point was made that Fowler couldn’t talk to Barnes without UT’s permission and that would have made the news…and it hasn’t. Second rumor I’ve heard from a co-worker who of course has a friend who is high up in the WPC that Barnes and Jay Wright have both said no. Until we have that UT press conference, we won’t really know for sure.

  22. choppack 04/06/2006 at 11:47 AM #

This is a tough choice – you can’t offer the same job to 2 people, what happens if they both say yes?

I think Calipari may be the better coach, but I do worry more about his ethics. While he’s never been cited, he’s had some pretty bad stuff happen on his watch. That may be why Fowler appears to be targetting Barnes 1st – both are great coaches, but Barnes doesn’t have the same rep that Calapari does – deservedsly so or not.

  23. BleedRed 04/06/2006 at 11:51 AM #

Let’s think about examples of ACC/BigEast/BigTen/SEC/PACTen type programs like ours where high-profile coaches from top 20 programs or NBA vs where young up-and-comers from mid-majors have been hired. How have each turned out?
High-profile: Norm Sloan at Florida B, Roy Williams UNC-CH (grudgingly an A), Dave Odom USC C+, Howland at UCLA A?, Tubby KY B-, Cal at MEM B+, Pitino at KY or Louisville B-, Sutton at KY B-,
Mid-Majors: Jimmy V at State A-, K at Duke A, Lefty at MD A-, Donovan UFL A, DOH at UNC-CH D (or IMHO A+), Pearl TN A?, Herb at State C+, Les at State D+,
Let’s have some fun. Add to my lists and let’s see which type choice has panned out better. You can argue with my grades (it is too early to tell with some, but give it a stab), but I’d be more interested in getting as many examples as possible to see the trends.

  24. Mr O 04/06/2006 at 11:56 AM #

BJD95, Jason, Cardiff: Now that Barnes was a clear number 1 target, would sweetening the deal slightly to overcome Calipari’s bruised ego work?

Tough question to answer. Calipari is so smooth in general with the media and he is obviously an excellent recruiter. IMO, our job comes down to recruiting more than anything…based on that criteris who is the better choice???

Barnes has coached in the NE, SE and SW. Calipari has coached in the NE and SE. IMO Barnes has an easier job to recruit to right now, so you have to take that into account with Barnes insanely talented recruiting class he has coming in.

It really is a tough call. Now that Wright doesn’t seem like a possibility, where do you go next? Are we down to Gilespie and LSU’s coach after that? Is there any other major name that could become involved?

  25. booman Group 04/06/2006 at 11:56 AM #

Paul Hewitt, Siena to GT. I’d give him a B.
