“I’m sure it was a minor adjustment that needed to be made, we just didn’t do it.”

Allright Cam, we can argue that you guys shot badly in part because of the game plan, but this is going too damn far. Are we to believe that you grown men need someone to point out the appropriate mid-game adjustments to make. No wonder coach can’t win with these guys.

“it was just one of those games where one team went cold. unfortunately it was state”

Dang, what rotten luck. It just seems so unfair that Lady Luck always gives us bad-shooting games against UNC, Duke, Texas and other highly ranked, well-coached teams.

If think about it, that’s just an insanely cruel coincidence. ‘Cuz Lord knows and so do I that it has nothing to do with coaching.

  3. jesse 03/19/2006 at 11:11 PM #

my opinion is that herb has done all the things you mentioned above, ie bringing in players, teaching them etc., but there is nothing you can do if your guys go cold for one night. every team goes cold at some point.

  4. Wolf1995 03/19/2006 at 11:11 PM #

    Wooooooooo!!!!

    “one of those games ”

I bet $1 with you, guys on this site will give you many of these “one of those games”!

Jesse, my advise to you is to find a better way to defend Herb.

  5. withheld 03/19/2006 at 11:18 PM #

Every team goes cold, but ultimately some team accomplish more than others. That, my friend, is coaching.

  6. jesse 03/19/2006 at 11:18 PM #

beowolf, i think the guys shot well against bc, gw, alabama, calif, all tournament teams. let’s don’t ignore some of the good wins state had.

  7. NCBP 03/19/2006 at 11:39 PM #

Jess, that’s the problem with our offense…relies on 3s just to have a chance. Herb has proven he won’t adjust, past performance is a pretty good indicator of future results.

  8. MrTnNC 03/19/2006 at 11:43 PM #

Jesse, here’s a thought: build a team that doesn’t plan to shoot 20+ three-pointers a game . . . a team that relys more on high percentage shots, like say, lay-ups from fast breaks and driving, pull-up 6-footers . . . a team that’s in position to grab an offensive rebound and stick it back . . . maybe a team something like the one that played the last 10 minutes of the first half. If they shoot

  9. jesse 03/19/2006 at 11:46 PM #

heck maybe you guys are right. who knows.

  10. MrTnNC 03/19/2006 at 11:46 PM #

Yikes … cut off … If they shoot

To quote a friend of mine “Everytime we go on the court I just hope we don’t get embarassed”.
10 years of this stuff – I left the WPC several years ago because I was so tired of the same old thing.
I’ll agree that being equal to UNC and Duke is a goal but not likely in the short term but losing to Wake – twice?
    Time for a change

  12. David 03/20/2006 at 6:14 AM #

One deffinition I’ve heard of insanity is doing the same thing hoping for a different outcome – sound familiar?

Where’s the post from the macdaddy of misinformation? Probably securing those french benefits he thinks he gets.

I hope this beatdown doesn’t kill any pending offers for Herb. Afterall he’s a great coach by Vitale’s standards, UNC and Duke fans standards and virtually anyone in the top 50 RPI’s standards.

And to show I mean no ill towards our coach I would like to personally offer my assistance if he should need help in moving. I hate moving but in this instance I’d be more than glad to help.

Herb Sendek: The Cure for March Madness

  15. Mr O 03/20/2006 at 7:39 AM #

We just simply didn’t have the horses to matchup with Texas. Barnes would be a fool to ever leave Texas for a job like NC State’s with the recruiting base he has in Texas.

I don’t care whether Herb stays or leaves. I just felt that we owed it to the kids to not rant and rave on the internet until the season was over. We lost this game by going 0-4 prior to the NCAAs costing ourselves a top 5 seed and a reasonable shot at advancing to the Sweet 16.

Personally, I thought what got us in trouble all year was when our team took quick shots and played 1 on 1 basketball. It was almost as if we tried to be something that we aren’t and that is what got us in trouble IMO and was the biggest difference in our play from January to late Feb and March.

Did anyone else have trouble watching the game if you were in non-NC markets? I hate CBS with a passion. I went to a sports bar to be certain that I could watch the game. Even on the channels dedicated to our game they switched coverage to other game.s

I only got to see about 20 minutes of the game and I missed our run at the end of the 2nd half.

  16. VTPACKFAN 03/20/2006 at 8:33 AM #

I’ve got the dish since we don’t even have cable where I live. I get ESPN, ESPN news, and ESPN 2. Every now and then they boadcast events on alternative channels at no extra cost. Yesterday I noticed that all day long you could pick any Women’s NCAA match-up and view it as if it were the only game on. CBS sucks. Why don’t they just show golf since it’s nearly year round now.

  17. Astral Rain 03/20/2006 at 9:22 AM #

I think some of the problem is that the Pitino way and the Princeton way just don’t mix. While I see the math behind chucking up massive 3-pters if you can hit 35% of them (1.05pts per poss isn’t bad), there is the negative effects which it puts on the defense- I’d love to see someone do some quantitave analysis on opp pt-per-poss after 3pt attempt and non-to 2pt attempt (though that covers a wide margin from dunks to 18fters). I’d suspect the opponents pt-per-poss goes up on the misses, and the percentage to make it work goes up to near 38%.

Needless to say, looking at the game, the players did best it seems when they weren’t listening to Sendek. To me, that’s a telling sign that he’s lost his effectiveness.

  18. All your base... 03/20/2006 at 9:49 AM #

Blah, blah, blah…yatta, yatta, yatta. Same sh!t, different day. Woke up to Sonny and Cher yet again…

I’m not going to apologize for criticizing the coach prior to the season being over. I do feel sorry for the players, but this is big time basketball and these young men need to learn to sack up and deal with it when life serves them a sh!t sandwich.

Quick shots? 1 on 1 basketball? O, you must have watched the entire season at that sports bar, because it sounds like you not only missed the majority of yesterday’s game, you missed the majority of the entire season.

What got us into trouble over the course of the season was a myriad of issues:
    – poor rebounding fundamentals (this is tops by far and away)
    – some of the most poorly timed TO calls _ever_
    – set inbounds plays repeated so much, the opposition knew what was coming
    – under utilizing players, ie. Cameron and Ced
    – over utilizing players at times when they were obviously stinking it up
    – poor OOC scheduling…we make these kids (and fans) think they’re better than they prior to ACC play
    – no inspiration from the leader of the program. We didn’t show up against the worst team in the ACC. Twice. Within a weeks time.
    – building 10 to 20 point leads and then changing the game plan with 10 minutes to go, letting the opposition get back in the game

This last one has become a Sendek trademark. The ACC tourney Maryland debacle and then the Vandy NCAAs meltdown. This season we were up on several teams where we should have put the hammer down and crushed them going away, but we didn’t and we let them back into the game. Granted we won some of these games in OT (which we would have lost in the past), but there is no excuse for letting these opponents get back in the game time and time again. It happens much too often under Sendek to be a coincidence.

So, in closing…Blah, blah, blah…yatta, yatta, yatta.
We can all rant until we’re blue in the face, because nothing we say is going to change anything. The media is going to _always_ have the idiots who kiss Herb’s 4ss. The majority of our lemming fan base are all plugged into the matrix and don’t have a clue what’s going on anyway. Herb isn’t going anywhere, because his superiors are happy with mediocrity and Herb obviously feels he is never at fault because he never publicly admits to doing anything wrong.

I’m a lifelong Pack fan and NCSU graduate. After seeing this same story play out season after excruciating season, I can’t take it anymore. Life is too short to _waste_ any more time on following this basketball program while that man remains at the helm.

    I quit.

  19. Mike 03/20/2006 at 9:53 AM #

My headline would be Barnes Loves Sendek way K and Roy do.

How many times did we fire up a 3 with no one under to rebound? Why do we always get killed on the boards? No one is there to try. Yeah, we missed a lot of 3’s – good reason not to rely on the 3, but worse, we had no chance to rebound when we missed. We actually played fairly well on the D glass. If you pull up for a 30 footer wiht no one under the glass, Roy or K would pull them out for pine time. Herb encourgaes our guys, “Nice try, maybe next time, keep shooting those since we dont want difficult 2’s.”

I think Herb was afraid the guys would get tired. You see, the used a lot of energy running to come back in the 1st half, and he did not want them to be tired so we did not run the 2nd half.

Now they have all off season to rest, because we are WTNY. We will be rested and ready to go! Woohooo, cant wait. I was so happy to see Bunting win a couple games over there in blue (until they were us) because I would have hated to see UNC admin get rid of him. Let him win just enough to keep Bunting around. Except now, I am not so sure who has the bigger clown for a football coach. There is no doubt from a basketball perspective.

Jess, you are right, sometimes the shots don’t fall and a coach can’t shoot for them. A coach can pull them out and change to something that works.

  20. Mike 03/20/2006 at 10:08 AM #

It never ends. Did anyone see on Fox 50 news last night? Gravley asked Herb, “tough question to ask but will you be back next year?” Herb said, “Why would you say that?” No reason not to be back was something that I remember but not sure the exact words.

It is quite simple. As an alum, Wolfpack Club member, and basketball fan……..I would be happy losing to Duke and UNC every year IF we could put a consistent product on the floor and be a top 10 team every year. If we went 12-4 and 26-4, I would be pleased. I dont want to lose to Duke and UNC every year, that is not my point. I dont think it is too much to ask to want to be top 10……but to sit there and say we cannot be top 10 because Roy and K live in our neighborhood is absurd. I want to beat UNC and Duke badly. But give me a top 10 team that can compete with them and I will take my chances. If we finished top 4 in country every year yet lost to K and Roy, I would be pleased. However, we are not even close to top 20, much less top 10. Herb cannot take us there and it is time to find someone who can. I dont want to lose to anyone, but give me a top 10 team, which we could/should have, and I will take my chances against the boys in blue. And if/when we lose, I will NOT gripe and complain.

  21. Jeff 03/20/2006 at 10:19 AM #

^ Most people completely agree with you on that. I do as well.

But, it is sounds so much better and it gives the media fodder to ridiculously boil it down with a focus on Carolina and Duke.

“it is only because their (SS) age, or lack of it, hasn’t allow them to exprienced what we have. ”

    2old2play,
This has been my conclusion also. I posted a few weeks ago in support on this shared point.

“the events that established our history and tradition occurred a generations ago. This 20 yr period of mediocrity has cleansed this ‘we have history and tradition’ attitude from our brains. And our students, fans, and grads under the age of 30 have never had this (“We are NC State, we have history and tradition” )mentality.”

  23. Mr O 03/20/2006 at 12:41 PM #

all your base: When Texas went up big in the first half, right before CBS switched from our game, Grant, Bethel and Bennerman were trying to go one and one and were forced into turnovers and/or took quick shots.

The same stuff happened late in the season as well. That was also the trend last year. Whenevere we got down, we had guys trying to do everything themselves instead of playing as a team.

I looked for the gametracker, but it isn’t posted yet or I would have posted the examples from yesterday’s game.

  24. BJD95 03/20/2006 at 12:52 PM #

O, I take it that you didn’t get to see our comeback. It was fast-break, up-tempo, and almost (maybe totally) devoid of 3-point shooting.

  25. Timbo 03/20/2006 at 1:37 PM #

WOOO!!!, Herb Ball, is robotic it doesnt allow for adjustment, so defenses are not required to adjust, if your offense requires your center to stand at the top of the key, and your shooters to to try to make layups WHO IS GETTING REBOUNDS, COACH COACH COACH!!! not players make these decisions, I remember Dean Smith saying that if your going to shoot from outside you must rebound!!!! Herb Sendek is not a coach he is a robot that has programed himself for failure, robots cannot think beyond thier programming therefor they make awlful coaches, the term robotic skunk come to mind. Which is a good connection with the name (FOWL-ER).
