Judgment Day… IS ON

For some years now discussion among those of us who want Sendek out the door always includes one name: Barnes.

Most of us remember the Barnes of Clemson, the coach who took what was supposed to be the worst team in ACC history and … won with it. The Barnes who wasn’t afraid to get up in the face of Dean Smith, Gut and the rest of the Chapel Hill sachems. The Barnes who grew up in Hickory and loves NC State.

Well, now that Texas and Barnes have eked out what appears to a surprisingly difficult win over the Ivy League, Judgment Day is approaching for all of us: Sendek, we alleged “Herb Haters,” and our old friends the Herb Sendek Sunshine Squad. Barnes v. Sendek, for all the move-on marbles in the NCAA.

Personally, I think Texas will advance and will beat Sendek like a red-headed stepchild. Even Sendek’s patented – and infuriating – habit of pulling out victories just before he has to polish his resume won’t save him here. Save a win, that is. The sad thing is, Fowler and the rest of the HSSSers will argue that this California win, Herb’s first in the past five tries, is reason for keeping him on. We’ve all seen that movie before, you see.

Either way, and even though the HSSSers won’t admit it, the battle between these two coaches should be telling. My money’s on the Man from Hickory.

ADDENDUM: I am wondering – does the relative difficulty against Penn signal matchup problems against the Pack? We shall see … and I’ll leave the analysis there to the X and O guys!

dan, very insightful response, I AM way out of my league. Sorry. I’m off the net for the night.

RedFred, maybe you missed some of my posts. I meant no disrespect; I just didn’t want to rehash the exact same discussion.

Congrats to the players for beating Cal. Just think what they might have done without Sendek this year (or any year).
Herb’s job is in jeopardy, so he relents and and tries to go inside to Simmons. Wonderful. About time.
Maybe he can now figure out how to utilize a 6’10” athletic big man.
This game changes nothing. Sendek has had 10 years to return State to legitimate-contender status. The bottom line for me? Too little, too late. Sendek must go!

    And I quote:
    ….”should have”…
    ….”could have”….
    ….”wouldn’t have”….
And you compared this team to Duke.

Comparisons to Duke aren’t a bad way to think, but what was it that you think made Duke win the games that you say they should have lost?

“Just the players, they were totally responsible, they did it all. The coach could have taken the month off.”

Sorry, just trying to use your line of thinking. Didn’t mean to steal your thunder by answering the question for you.

I posted this on another thread. Hope you do not mind I post here again.

I went to the game tonight. The arena was not that empty. There was a pack of State fans on 100 section. The Amercian Airlines Center is Dallas Maverick’s home. It is huge. So seeing from TV may look like empty. I was siting on a 200 section with few pack fans I have never met before.

It was a nice win. This is actually my first “live” game after left State in 1995. I live near Dallas, and did not buy a ticket in advance. Today after work, I just went and got a ticket at the door.

I agree with most of you on this site about Herb’s future. We do need a change, or Herb has to change his coaching style or make adjustments during the game. I have followed Pack most on TV this season. I did see changes in tonight’s game:

    1) we did go to Ced more than we did past few games tonight, which opened the game up in some degree;

    2) Grant did not take many “ill” drives to the baskets, which pabably saves us few turnovers;

    3) Atsur played less, so Grant got more minutes, which helped the defence.

I also watched half of Texes game. If State shoots 3s better on Sunday, I will see State advances. Again, to his credits, it seems Herb made some adjustments for the game. He should do that long time ago.

Just want to share some with you.

No intended offense to those who want the Pack to lose to put pressure on the AD to buy out Coach Sendek’s contract, but I’d really enjoy watching the team win and get to the Sweet 16. I’m not as fanatical as I was during undergrad, now just enjoy watching our alma mater do well.

Very happy for the players and coaches after beating Cal.

Sorry gentlemen but one game does not make the case for or against Herb. Not after 10 seasons. If the HSSS’ers want to say last night is indicative of Herb’s abilities go ahead. But we all have seen 10 seasons of marginal results and honestly that probably will not change.

He is a bad fit for our university and if all we want is to make the NCAAT 50-60% of the time he might be your guy! He can finish perennially anywhere from third to sixth in the ACC and for many that’s good enough but a good many of us aren’t willing to concede to this losers mentality. Here’s to hoping Herb does the honorable thing and that is find a home where he will not be so devisive. Unfortunately I think his view of the matter is to stay here until the bitter end and that may be another couple of years. Ugh!

There was nothing other than the result last night to lend any creedence that the team we saw earlier this year has returned! We played a little better than the past four games but not to a level that would scare any top seeded team.

  9. Clarksa 03/18/2006 at 8:36 AM #

Wow…I go out for a few drinks on St Patty’s day and missed all this? I should have stayed home, this is much better entertainment.

  10. Old13 03/18/2006 at 8:51 AM #

Oh, great! Win one game and he stays! But we have to look at (that stupid) Body of Bull to fire him! I’m outta here!

  11. smile 03/18/2006 at 9:10 AM #

William: “Would you really rather win the frickin’ ACC tournament and lose in the first round?” YES, i would. Without a doubt.

  12. MrTnNC 03/18/2006 at 9:16 AM #

    My reasons . . . .

    (1) He wins games … enough and at the right times to by passably good, but no titles, banners, or games that win bragging rights in our own backyard.

    (2) Coaching strategy that leaves many of us asking “Why?” … things that simply defy conventional coaching wisdom … usually things related to the Princeton, er, NC State offense.

    (3) An offensive scheme that is as much fun to watch as mealtime at the retirement home (a scheme that sometimes disappears, resulting in an exciting and entertaining game, but is sure to return … always does).

    (4) An “even” personality that is commendable in most situations … but which seems to rub off on players by season’s end. We’re playing basketball here … not preparing for a company audit. There is no reason to listen to or read pregame comments … we’ve heard the same predictable lines before. It’s hard to connect with a leader who only tells you what you already know.

Ten years and still NOT a good fit. That said, I pull for NCSU to go far … even all the way, and for Herb to impress others around the country enough that job offers pour in. It’d be ultimate WIN-WIN.

“As a State alum and professor, reading this post & thread is simply embarassing(sic). What have we (state fans) devolved to?”

That is embarrassing professor (two r’s). I guess your opinion carries extra weight, isn’t that right professor?

As a State alum and mid-level manager in a for-profit organization, I can relate to the original post as it stands. Herb is not unlike many professionals out in the open market. Excel in your profession or work somewhere else. I work under that pressure everyday and would expect my employer to make a change should my performance deteriorate.

In my opinion and obviously a multitude of other’s opinions, Herb has not performed to the minimum level required for NC State to retain his services. If Herb is such a great coach, his “services” will be in great demand in the open market. (See Mike O’Cain).

Somehow, I doubt other universities will be banging down our door knowing the great and talented basketball coach Herb Sendek is being wrongfully run out on a rail.

  14. BJD95 03/18/2006 at 10:56 AM #

PACDADDY – injuries should have nothing to do with our intensity, passion, and focus. That is motivation, which is certainly part of coaching. And it didn’t just show up from time to time, or last a week or so – it lasted the better part of 6 weeks.

  15. class of '74 03/18/2006 at 12:14 PM #

The best case scenario is we all win. Somehow we get by Texas and another team or two and all the publicity showered upon the program will generate interest in Herb, that he has heretofore not received. And he can go his merry way and we can get someone who will be a real contender and unify the fanbase. That’s the best case and probably a dream as well but we all can dream.

Note to pacdaddy: the irrational posts on this site normally have one common thread that being you are the author.

    Class of 74,

I like your dream scenario…I hope it comes true.

All of this pre-school HHHH vs HSSS crap is ridiculous.

A house divided as they say…

What happened to the supposed NCSU professor’s post? The one that started:

“As a State alum and professor, reading this post & thread is simply embarassing(sic). What have we (state fans) devolved to?

Makes my post in response to his seem very strange. Yes, the good professor could not spell embarrassed correctly, but he tells all the “haters” to grow up.

^ The post was deleted. As were many of them.

The reason is because we don’t have an interest in supplying a forum for others to criticize us as individuals or a “site”. We’ve shared this view a lot in the past and will be posting something on the blog soon.

We ask that people concentrate their comments on the topics as opposed to making comments about their macro thoughts the site or its authors. If we allowed that, then every single topic would/could turn into a referrendum on individuals’ feelings.

We also aren’t interested in supplying a forum for wonderful State fans to be criticized by others. You can visit http://www.PackPride.com to criticize people with whom you don’t agree.

  20. Rick 03/18/2006 at 4:08 PM #

    BTW

Anyone that thinks Packpride is not pro Sendek is smoknig crack.
They had an article of the front page criticizing the “herb haters”.

    Look Hypocrisy Meter,
I’m as tired of hearing your side as you are mine.

Here is what my side is based on. There is a team playing in NCAA tournament who looked d*ed good last night. They didn’t and haven’t been allowed to play a style of basketball all year. I had very lofty expectations before the season ever started, I thought it was a 2 man race for the regular season title, and still believe it should have been.

There is no “one thing” about this year’s team that overwhelms people, but everything is there for the makings of a highly competitive run, it’s been there all along and wasted until now.

If you have athleticism, use it. If you have size keep it under the basket. If have court savvy and great passing skills stay in position where you can use them.

This is not Jack in the Box, one size fits all. Last night was a brief glance of how the team could have looked early in the season if they played a similar style from the very beginning.

They have at the most 5 games now to polish a style of play that they could have been perfecting all year long. Is it too little too late, who knows?
But if playing again, with all the same options available that I saw last night, produces a deep run in the big tournament, then weren’t the players, and the fans, cheated out of what could have been a great and memorable regular season.

I hope they win it all, but I’m not going watch next year if there isn’t a change or a VERY LOUD public apology for a very disapointing regular season that shouldn’t have been.

  22. Hypocrisy Meter 03/18/2006 at 6:46 PM #

“I’m as tired of hearing your side as you are mine.”

    RedFred,

You have actually just proven part of my point above. I don’t need to read your diatribe—I have watched our team enough and actually want to see Herb move on and be replaced by someone of the calibre of Barnes or Calipari to take us to the next level (which I doubt Sendek can do). Yet, you don’t see that because I don’t just blindly rip Herb. You and your “side” immediately think that a person is a Herb apologist if the person doesn’t attack Herb at every turn—and in turn attack the supposed Herb apologist personally. It’s all a bunch of hypocritical crap which this site would be even better without…

  23. PACDADDY 03/18/2006 at 11:22 PM #

’74…yea right. When I was here we were in the top 25(close to top 10) for most of season and 2nd in conference…and I was irrational?

Get a clue! Don’t give me this “I knew we would lose last 4 games crap…that’s pure BS. You were critical of this team when we were winning!

I only hope that if Herb leaves, we can get a high caliber/profile coach, because if we end up with a lame “do nothing” coach, I think some of us will have something to say to some of you!

I say that because I suspect we could lose Herb after this season and have a great deal of trouble finding an adequate replacement. Sure there will be candidates ready and willing…I just hope they’re able…fact is…this is a tough job…we need a high profile guy or we’ll be in worse shape.

  24. class of '74 03/19/2006 at 8:42 AM #

^If Herb leaves the ONLY thing that bothers me with replacement is that LF will be involved in the process! Todd Turner and LF are the major components in our athletic problems over the past 10 – 15 years.

Actually if you bothered to look I said the life was gone after the UNC game and I thought we would have two records for this team. The quickest to 21 wins in 20+ years and the quickest to 10 losses after winning 20 games. And I wasn’t too far off the mark unfortunately but then I had 10 years of history from which to draw my conclusion.

You may say whatever you want to me about “lame” coaches but Herb has proven not to be a thoroughbred. And it’s time for him to find another pasture to graze. I just hope he takes us as far as possible and some other school wants him alot more than most of us do. That’s the best for both sides IMHO.

  25. Jeff 03/19/2006 at 9:10 AM #

Yet, you don’t see that because I don’t just blindly rip Herb

I am looking forward to you sharing all the many examples of “blind” rips of Herb from this blog that has more statistical information than you will find anywhere on the web.
