Coach K Defends Herb Sendek at PC

Coach K came out swinging today in support of Herb Sendek.

“He’s really one of the terrific coaches in our country,” Krzyzewski said. “He’s a proven winner. It makes me appreciate what we have at Duke with the support we’ve had.”

“There are still some (Iron Dukes) I would never talk to,” Krzyzewski said. ” … But I’ll always talk to my president and my administrators, because they didn’t flinch. Hopefully (N.C. State’s) people won’t flinch, either.”

“For those people, go write a letter and complain about me, then,” Krzyzewski said. “Because I am going to say something good about a good guy and a really good coach.”

“We had, I think, four outstanding teams in our conference, and I think that’s State included,” Krzyzewski said. “State had some problems at the end of the year when they were hurt and injured and whatever. I mean, they beat (George Washington) by (21). They were really good.”

I love these!! Talk about signs of the death-spiral. Am I the only who remembers that Matt Doherty came to Sendek’s public defense in 2001? At that time Doherty was 2-0 against Sendek. Of course that doesn’t compare to K’s 21-3 record vs Sendek in the last decade…but you get the point. (Just out of curiosity, how many times do you think Dean Smith came running to Coach K’s defense when things weren’t going well?)

Sendek never had, or chose to take the opportunity to return Doherty’s support. Chalk up another example of how other program’s are run compared to the one at NC State; you have to give Carolina credit for making their decisions decisively and without lingering in purgatory to create confrontations with their own fans.

Coack K also commented about how difficult his 2nd and 3rd years were at Duke. Allow me to repeat that – 2nd and 3rd years. For all you homegamers out there, Coach Sendek is now in his tenth season at the helm of the NC State program and has compiled:

* The second worst record of performance in the history of the NC State program

* A performance that clearly ranks him ahead of a ONE of the 17 coaches in ACC history that have been provided the honor to coach for a decade or longer in the ACC.

Unwillingly, K’s comments served to praise the NC State fan base while simultaneously highlighting the difference between he and Sendek – both currently and historically.

Evidently, K feels that Duke fans are far worse than State fans. You see, the Dookies were on K’s case in year two and three. NC State fans didn’t start getting on Herb’s case until his 5th (horrible) season that came on the heels of four previous seasons with no NCAA Tournament appearance. And, K was coaching at a time when the NCAA Tournament had less bids than they do today. WOW!! Talk about a stark difference in fans’ support!

You’d think that NC State fans didn’t help finance a $166 million 20,000 seat arena that State built before financing one of the most plush basketball practice facilities in the country. Poor Herb Sendek. The fans just don’t do anything but shell out their time and money to watch other coaches call seasons like the last two “terrific”. Herb Sendek may be a “terrific” coach. Unfortunately for him, coaches (at most places) get paid to deliver “terrific” results. I won’t argue that Herb isn’t a terrific coach since I know that nobody in the world that can spell their name will argue that he has produced terrific results.

In the mid-1980s, K ultimately succeeded as most coaches do — he succeeded by his 4th and 5th year or he would have gotten canned. Past performance is the #1 indicator of future behavior. Is it any wonder why Herb Sendek hasn’t broken through yet? He never has, and history, of which K is a major component, indicates that if he hasn’t by now then he never will.

No wonder K wants to support Sendek. Just like Matt Doherty did. Next up…Roy Williams and Skip Prosser.

Post-Mortems from the News & Observer:
February 7, 1996
“WOLFPACK ADVISORY: North Carolina State fans wanting to dump coach Les Robinson should remember that no coach in the league has a better record against the Tar Heels. Robinson is 4-2 against the Heels in Raleigh and 5-7 overall for a .417 winning percentage. Duke, under Mike Krzyzewski, is 13-24 (.351) against the Heels, and no other ACC coach is over 30 percent against them.

Even before the Wolfpack’s win over Carolina on Saturday, Robinson received strong support on the editorial page of the Raleigh News and Observer. “He (Robinson) represents the very best of college athletics and N.C. State is blessed to have him,” the editorial concluded.”

March 6, 1996
AMEN CORNER: Every coach in the league has offered support for North Carolina State’s embattled Les Robinson, but none has done it more eloquently in a few short words than Virginia’s Jeff Jones. To critics who suggest Robinson is too nice to be a good coach, Jones replies, “There is nothing wrong with being a nice guy. There’s too many jerks in this profession, anyway.”

“with a few Rose Bowl appearances”

One that during WWII was moved to the NC for security reason’s. That games’ revenues paid for the sweatshop we know as Cameron Indoor Stadium.

If he is so darn great then where are all of the offers??? Maybe they know what we know. We’ve been paying for steak and getting hamburger all of these years.

    New dark horse in Cincinnati

Coaching scoop? I’ve got coaching scoop. Here’s what I (and now you) are hearing:

Cincinnati: If it’s not interim coach Andy Kennedy — and it should be interim coach Andy Kennedy — the longtime buzz has said this job is between Murray State’s Mick Cronin and George Washington’s Karl Hobbs. However, North Carolina State coach Herb Sendek is a late-arriving dark horse. And let’s be honest: Sendek would be perfect. He’s a winner, he once coached down the road at Miami (Ohio), he’s a Midwest native (Pittsburgh) and he’s got the Eagle Scout personal life Cincinnati craves.

I am sure some of you may have already seen this, but there is hope per Doyle @ cbs….

Pennsylvania is no longer a yankee state? Go figure.

Does “late-arriving dark horse” signify that Herb actually showed interest in this job?

    Go Herb Go!

  9. boonami 03/21/2006 at 9:24 AM #

As my UNC buddies always tell me, “Keep Herb. We love him at State” of course they do. It only took 3 years for UNC to “solve” their problem.

thought y’all should see this quote that a buddy of mine sent me from the WRAL Blog in Raleigh:

    Dear State fans,

You will never be UNC or Duke. You are, and shall forever remain, the red-shirted stepchild in the Triangle with, or without, Coach Sendek. I hope you’re successful in running Coach Sendek out of town because I look forward to reading more of these blogs when your team goes 15-70 in the next three years. Who would come to NC State to coach when the message you’re sending is “NCAA tournament bids, 20+ wins, graduate players, etc., is not good enough.” Good luck in your pursuit of a new coach. I hear Jim Harrick is available.

It really is a big joke among the tarheel fans. Did’nt every State fan in the world hate to see Roy go to UNC. We knew what was going to happen. How do you think the UNC fans would feel if we named a big time, proven winner?

  12. JW 03/21/2006 at 12:17 PM #

Come to the realization that NC State is always going to be a medicore ACC program. With TWO storided programs in your backyard, and TWO Hall of Fame coaches, its really hard to get the athletes that NC State fans expect. Herb Sendek has done a fantastic job in his tenure with State. Sure, for the elite programs, Duke, UNC, UConn, etc., just making the tournament is not good enough, but for programs like State, it says a lot, in a league like the ACC.

Herb is a good coach, but sometimes I feel like he should show some tuffness about him while he’s coaching, non of his players have that killer in them. That is past down from the coach. We play too punkish. We need a coach that don’t care if you are the super star, and will bench you if you don’t produce.

  14. KMan 03/21/2006 at 5:13 PM #

I’m sure Dean would have lobbied for Coach K, considering Dean won his last 10 games against him…

  15. Jeff 03/21/2006 at 6:18 PM #

What year was that for K?

What year is Sendek at State?

  16. 4NCST8 03/21/2006 at 7:23 PM #

boonami, your buddy is a moron.

How many Duke and UNC fans would accept Herb if K and Roy quit or left?

    None.

That tells you all you need to know. They wouldn’t consider Herb Sendek at all.

  17. Clyde 03/22/2006 at 1:48 AM #

Who ARE these guys? Who is Sendek? NCSU coach? Who is this godlike “Coach K” who appears to have unnerved everyone. Is that the guy on the commercials on TV?

  18. CTA3PLAY 03/22/2006 at 11:57 AM #

Ok let just look at the evidence. No oppsing coach is going to come out and say yeah the fans are right. He is not a good coach, he should be fired. Of course if I know I can beat a coach on the side line and with my style of play day in and day out I would support them to. Its like this, last time I check Princeton or any other team that plays like us won the NCAA. That is the big goal not to feel good about 8-8 in conference or winnign 20 games. Anyone heard Dukes goal Regular season title, ACC tournament tile and the NCAA. That is a winning mind set. Is it so wrong to wanting that. So what can the wolfpack nation do about it nothing but complain until the people realize that we can be better then what we are. Herb Stabilized the program and that was good but now you watch us play againist UNC the style and agressivess is whats beats us before the talent does. So I will jsut sit back and pull for the players not the coach.

As a State fan, do I want better results? Of course I do. Every fan of every team, including Duke, would like better results. But those results will come with a price. Just look down the road at Chapel Hill. Sure, they got their National Championship. But they had to eat one of their own to do it. They brought in a coach who got out of Kansas just before word got out that he had authorized the paying of players. He has no problem bringing in freshmen who are older than most sophomores. He has no problem bringing in a guy who only qualifies by taking a 7th-Grade algebra course OVER THE INTERNET during the summer.

Yes, I’m disappointed that we faultered at the end of the season. But, Herb took a program that was driven to the ultimate depths by an administration that overreacted to a bunch of false accusations in the early 90s, spurred on by the baby blue local press. Why do you think they were so eager to get rid of Valvano? No one wanted to play at State after that. It would take any coach five years just to bring the program’s reputation back to a point where he could then begin building a program. And then he took it to the next level, getting us to five NCAAs in a row.

Is Herb the right man to now take us to the next level? Possibly not. But rather than spew venom at Herb year after year, he deserves our respect and our gratitude for getting us out of the mess that the school’s administration put us in and for making the program relevant. There are hundreds of schools in the country which would gladly change places with us. So, if it is time for Herb to turn over the reigns to someone else, at least have the decency as he exits to recognize and thank him for what he has done for the program.

Herb has done a great job. We are in the upper echelon of the conference. He is recruiting great players. Do you remember Les?
