Shooting Gallery

A discussion at the end of a comment string last week got me thinking – what would an all-time “first team” list of ACC shooters look like? I had a chance to discuss with two colleagues at lunch (one Duke fan, one UNC fan), and we seemed to agree on the following:

Updated: You convinced me about Mark Price.

– Rodney Monroe, NC State
– Randolph Childress, Wake Forest
– J.J. Redick, Duke
– Dennis Scott, Georgia Tech
Donald Williams, UNC
– Mark Price, Georgia Tech

This list only considers players I’ve seen play over the years, and my ACC hoops memory only goes back to 1981 or 1982. I call this a shooters’ list, but I only really considered players who were also prolific scorers (i.e., not just designated zone-busters, but rather players that could take over a game with their shooting ability). That kept guys like Terry Gannon on the bench. Of these 5, I consider the first 3 no brainers, and I am most iffy about Williams. But he was a clutch guy, and did take home the Final Four MVP trophy (which he dedicated to V, earning him my eternal respect). NOTE: Williams has since been bumped for Price.

Feel free to note other deserving candidates in the comments section.

Migjen was the classic case of a player looking pretty good when he was surrounded by great players.

Scottie Pippen and the Bulls w/ and w/o Jordan.

Mark Price was the best pure shooter I ever saw in my time of watching ACC ball, which goes back to the late 60’s. My opinion, but man could that guy toss an arcing net-ripper.

Because the remainder of his game was extraordinary and he made so many spectacular plays around the rim, people forget how great a shooter David Thompson was. He would have to make my top ten. Maryland had a cross-eyed woman player who was actually the best pure shooter I saw in the ACC while I was at State (79-84).

Kenny Matthews was the only guy that we would scream at to back up if he wasn’t on because he was obviously too close to the basket. No kidding. If he was cold it was because his 22-and-a-half-foot shots would clang off the back of the iron, but he’d find his groove when he backed up to 23 feet even. If there had been a three pointer when Kenny played he would have been the ACC’s first 3-point shooting legend. As a pure shooter he was better than both Whitt and Gannon.

Randolph Childress was an outstanding player, but one great ACC Tournament can’t get him on my list. I’m looking at the entire career. Like John Gilchrest, Childress was a point guard that got hotter than a firecracker one weekend in March, and shot the lights out when it mattered most. That ’95 team was probably the second or third best in WFU history, along with the ’62 and ’81 teams.

It’s a pity that Greg Manning is barely remembered by anyone outside the state of Alaska err… I mean Maryland. Dude is 22nd in ACC career FG percentage at .583, and everyone above him and everyone below him down to Vince Carter at #73 was a frontcourt player. Whoever heard of a GUARD leading the league in field goal percentage? Manning did it in 1980, shooting 64%…and that was on a team with Buck Williams and Albert King. If I were to change anything about my selections, I’d put Manning on the first team and put maybe Kenny Matthews on the second.

JeremyHyatt, help me out! I’ve been to that link you posted, but can’t find the 81-97 rosters, just a story about Calhoun. I’d really like to have that info.

Hmm, Migjen Bakali, that’s a name I haven’t thought of in a while.

One name I’ll toss out that hasn’t been mentioned so far, Walter Davis.

    Walter Davis.

I’ll bet Duke fans haven’t forgotten him. I was in 8th grade when WD completed the 8 pts in 17 seconds (without a 3pt shot) come-back against Duke

How can you even have this conversation with a BBU fan and not bring up CC Harrison? I know he wasn’t in the same class as these other consistently great players, but you had to at least needle him with a CC suggestion.

And for some “blasts from the past”
    Tate Armstrong – Duke
    Larry Miller – UNX
    Vann Williford – State
    Barry Parkhill – VA
