Preparing for Akron

Akron

We’ve been trying to get the gentleman at Section Six to consider coming over to StateFansNation. His stuff is just wonderful and fits EXACTLY what we do here. We shall not give up our quest!! 🙂

In the meantime, the work done at Section Six and Red & White from State continue to complement our work perfectly. So today, Section Six prepares us for Akron with no need for us to do much else on the topic other than turn your attention to some interesting Akron bits from Ohio.com:

Running Back Performance
At first glance, Dennis Kennedy’s rushing statistics against Penn State weren’t that impressive. He had 59 yards in the University of Akron’s 34-16 loss to Penn State last Saturday.

But Zips coach J.D. Brookhart said Kennedy’s play was noteworthy, considering the 5-foot-11, 200-pound sophomore went up against a physical and athletic defensive unit that had four players back from last year’s Big Ten championship team.

Brookhart was most pleased that Kennedy showed durability. He carried 25 times and had a few plays where he needed power and strength by turning several would-be tackles for losses into positive yardage.

“Dennis was our offensive player of the game,” Brookhart said. “He played extremely well. He was good on pass protection, ran the ball well, caught the ball and just made some things happen. Overall, Dennis played a great game.”

Kennedy originally signed a national letter of intent with Ohio State but never played for the Buckeyes. He ended up at UA before the 2004 season and sat out the year. Last year, he played behind Brett Biggs but took advantage of his limited playing time. In the spring, he solidified himself as the starter.

* Kicking Game – “Zips kicker Matt Domonkos and punter John Stec made their collegiate debuts against the Nittany Lions, and the results were mixed. Domonkos kicked a 46-yard field goal late in the second quarter but missed a point-after attempt in the third quarter.

“I thought Matt came in and stepped up,” Brookhart said. “For him to hit a 46-yarder in those conditions, right off the bat, was awesome. I think he got overly excited on the (PAT) and just tried to kill it. He’ll learn from that.”

Stec had seven punts for an average of 33.3 yards in rainy conditions.

“John had no trouble fielding the ball all camp, and he has very good hands,” Brookhart said. “You couple 107,000 fans, 18 years old, and a wet ball with a rush coming at you… he didn’t play well, but he responded after getting hit a couple times and just kept going out there. He will get better.”

* Injury report – Senior left tackle Tim Crouch injured an ankle against Penn State and missed practice Tuesday, but Brookhart expects him to start Saturday at North Carolina State. “We’re just trying to figure out if we want him to practice or whether resting him will be the best thing.”

* Updated Akron Preview from Pack Pride

    Thanks – good information.

Looks like we’re up against a solid QB and OL. Given last year’s ranking in Rushing D – we should be able to move the ball on the ground. I’d really like to see us have at least 3 sustained drives Saturday and crack the 24 point margin.

  2. vtpackfan 09/06/2006 at 8:52 AM #

Its hard to tell with how Penn. St. tried to move the ball whether this years Zips have improved much defending the run. The Nittany Lions were content spreading the field and trying to get the ball into the flats where all their playmakers can run wild. I think that the combo of a lot of power formations, especially with Baker and Brown playing at the same time mixed in with some timely short WR screens to Blackman can really do the job. I know from last weeks game alot of fans would like to see Tresselman and Stone look downfield alot more, but IMO State needs to find a way to build any kind of offense before the Miami and Florida State games (respectively not over looking So. Miss. ofcourse). Even if we start the ACC with a simple offensive attack of handing the ball off, and throwing short well timed routes, it would still be better than going into those two huge games unsure of what our strenghts on offense are. Its like in pitching in the ninth inning, if your going to get hit and beat, better make sure that you make them hit your best pitch. Marcus Stone’s best pitch is not the post or fade route, beleive you me.

We aren’t scheduled to play Miami this year.

I think we’re going to find out something about defense this week. I’m still not convinced this defense belongs in the top half of the ACC, but we’ll see.

I was unable to see the ASU game, but for those of you who did –

Did we run any sort of misdirection with Brown & Baker similar to what Wake runs? Or play action to one running back and then a screen to the other on the opposite side?

  6. noah 09/06/2006 at 9:27 AM #

Wolf-N, one of the highlights of the game was an Andre Brown misdirection. We faked a student-body right and then quick-pitched to Brown going left (he never started right, so I don’t you’d call it a counter). Brown beat the CB to the hole and then nailed the safety coming over for the stop. They ran into each other full speed and Brown sent the safety flying backwards by about 15 feet (no hyperbole)

this game is going to be a bit tougher… I have confidence in our run game, and defense… I say we establish a lead with mostly the run game and screens, then we see what our pass game can do. I want to see something this time.

Here’s what Chuck says about Stone and the long ball:

“We’re confident, said Amato. “One of the best things he’s done in our preseason is throw the deep one. We didn’t do it the other night. Their corners were playing way off and inside. When you do that, you’re kind of saying that you’re going to take away the deep one and the inside skinny post. There’s no doubt you’ve got to be able to throw. There is going to come a time when we’re going to have to throw the football. But am I concerned? Not at all.

It really is not fair. Chuck gets to evaluate Stone for the spring and fall up close and we have to form our opinions on one Saturday from the NEZ.

Lamart Barrett organized and got his teammates out for 7v7 shells all summer. I expect there is more to our passing game than we’ve seen.

I believe that also, I just think that the practice field vs game day are two totally different animals. There’s practice through the week, and early season practice in the OOC on Saturdays.

In Marcus Stone’s six wins as a starter, his numbers are:

    53-105 for a 50.4 percent completion rate
    574 yards
    5-5 td/int

    That’s a collegiate passing efficiency of 102.5
Under the NFL rating system, his QB rating would be 62.95.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a college QB have a passing efficiency of under 100.

Stone’s best single-game passing numbers were, I believe, against BC….a game where they were focused on stopping the run (holding us to about 65 yards, as I recall). Stone threw for over 200 yards (a career high). To be fair, he benefitted from a 90-yard pass to Brian Clark (a 20 yard pass and a 70 yard run).

I see serious trouble ahead if the Baker/Brown attack fails to produce. We have a quarterback who can’t pass.

This is becoming a look how bad State football is site. State teams often do not achieve what we feel like thay should but this belly moaning about Stone is old. Is it you guys plan to come on-line everyday and rag Stone in every available football thread. I guess it is so you can come back a few weeks from now and boast that you reported that Stone sucked.

I for one hope you are proven wrong.

We are 1-0 for the gods sake and have won 6 of our last 7.

  13. PBdafan 09/06/2006 at 11:44 AM #

1-0 vs a division 1AA school. If we had Athens Drive on the schedule, we’d probably be 2-0. In my mind, we’re 0-0 until we play somebody. There is a lot of moaning, and for good reason. Whichever way the coaches are trying to spin it, 37 yeards against a lower tier opponent is pitiful and worrisome. I saw Stone miss (ie not see) an open downfield receiver at least 6 times. So Chuck’s line about playing off the receivers may be accurate, but he’s not mentioning those times when the receivers beat the coverage anyway.

Like Dave Glenn said last night, the second half of the game clearly sent a message that the coaches do not have confidence in Stone as a passer. Obviously Stone and the rest of the team now have that message. Good job Chuck – you have really set the stage for the rest of the season!

  14. Dan 09/06/2006 at 11:44 AM #

As long as Andre Brown can keep the offense from having too many 3 and outs, we should be ok here.

We dont need Marcus Stone to win games for us to go to a bowl game. Solid defense, Andre Brown, and John Deraney can get us there…. as long as the turnovers and penalties are kept to a minimum. Its a grind out season. Let’s just all pretend its Jerome Bettis and Ben Roethlisberger back there, and it’s 2004. Ball control and defense this year. Go Pack!

“I see serious trouble ahead if the Baker/Brown attack fails to produce. We have a quarterback who can’t pass.”

In all fairness, any team that cant run is going to be in trouble. We have an incredible running back in Brown. We should be celebrating that more.

I watched the edited version of the Akron-PSU game last night. The only reason this was somewhat close was due to the fumbles/mis-snaps PSU had in the game. On the opening kick of the 2nd half PSU returned the kick across the 50, only to fumble the ball and give Akron great field position. Something like 12 plays later Akron scored. Akron’s kicking game wasn’t solid at all. They missed an extra point wide wide left.

I think we’ll be able to pressure their punter/kicker all day long, and get one for sure. The PSU/Akron game should have been 44-10 without the errors PSU made. So I’ve got to believe Stone can manage at least 27 points and our D will contain their QB. He wasn’t very mobile, and neither is their line. As the day moves along, they’ll get tired I believe and our Def’s speed will take over.

  16. redfred2 09/06/2006 at 12:45 PM #

I’m not one of the one’s beating on Stone’s job performance, he’ll either step up to the plate, or he won’t. I’m hoping he will.

I still say it’s a coaching, or recruiting problem. If everyone on the site wants to beat this kid down so bad, even with the tranfers, where are the back ups? Was Davis so good that we couldn’t have found this out earlier or explored other avenues in the off season? Are there no converted HS QB’s playing at other positions on the team right now?

Options….options….options….Where are they? I guess even with last year’s performance ratings that everyone wants to continuously throw out, the QB position was already set in “Stone” before this season began.

It seems pretty obvious to me anyway, but it is not the fault of the seemingly “only option” kid who’s playing the position right now?

  17. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 09/06/2006 at 12:50 PM #

F- David Glenn’s opinion. Why would I or any state fan care less what he has to say about anything.

  18. noah 09/06/2006 at 1:22 PM #

” Is it you guys plan to come on-line everyday and rag Stone in every available football thread.”

Yes, god forbid people express their opinions. What are we coming to when people feel like they can state what they believe to be the truth!! Don’t these people realize they have magical powers and if they say something bad about NC State it will absolutely come true?

  19. BoKnowsNCS71 09/06/2006 at 1:26 PM #

Right now All I care about is W’s. Pretty W’s or ugly W’s. SI had us going 3-9 and 1-7 in ACC and I hope we prove them wrong. CFN has us projected for the Emerald Bowl with a much better record.

Coach A knows what he has. Knows their strengths and weaknesses early in this season. He also knows what they have to do to win.

Some WP fans are starting to sound like t hole fans who are already whining with their first L. Give the team and Coach A some time — one — or even 2 games don’t make a season.

  20. Dan 09/06/2006 at 1:30 PM #

“Right now All I care about is W’s. Pretty W’s or ugly W’s.”

    Here. Here.

I might even like it better if we just run it down people’s throat and never give them a chance to have the ball. Then kill their QB when they do get it only to keep for another 5-8 minutes. Rinse and Repeat. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

  21. BoKnowsNCS71 09/06/2006 at 1:40 PM #

Agree Dan. Nebraska used to do that for years in their best days.

  22. BJD95 09/06/2006 at 1:41 PM #

Like I said before (and similar to noah’s post above), a blog thread is going to involve sharing of analysis – good and bad (in Ws and Ls). I’ll take an ugly W against an upper echelon team any way we can get it – but against Appy, the W was already a given.

Stone is a good natural LEADER – which is why he has been able to compile such a good record (and why he needed to start over Davis last year, since the team had lost confidence in Jay). But he MUST get better as a passer if he wants to keep it up. Our defense is thankfully still good, but it’s not last year’s. We don’t need him to be great, but we do need more than he showed last week.

  23. duckmanjw 09/06/2006 at 1:51 PM #

Football is a team sport and although I was somewhat dumbfounded at times at the game on Saturday, I must say that we put a decent team effort together. Not great, but pretty good overall.

The defense was good but had its problem, same with the offense. Neither side showed dominance and we won. That’s what we need more than anything, a team playing together and coming out on top. Showing we can play as a team will only make us better in the tougher games later in the year.

For going on 5 years now, all you here is that NCSU is one side dominant, offensively with Rivers, and since defensively. Being a unbalanced team is what has gotten us where we are, mediocre!

I agree that we need a QB that can throw the ball when needed, but we do not need one to win games on his own, nor should we expect that. I want a guy who shows to be a field leader in the good and bad times, one who can makes plays when needed but ultimately gets the ball in the hands of the playmakers, whether by handing it off or throwing it.

Can Stone do those things, I think so. Regardless of his stats in those games, he’s 6-1 and has shown some leadership. He’s not been pretty at all times, but football isn’t about pretty or at least that’s how I was brought up learning the game!

  24. Dan 09/06/2006 at 2:11 PM #

We need to stop attributing the W-L record to Stone. Do you think its any coincidence that it was during Stone’s first start against Southern Mississippi that Andre Brown emerged?

Andre Brown is 6-1. Marcus Stone’s job is to take the ball from Leroy Harris (or Luke Lathan) and hand it to Andre Brown. His secondary job is to every once in a while fake it Andre and throw it to Darrell Blackman?Ant Hill in such a way as to not throw an INT.

    Andre Brown is a monster.

(My only complaint to the above is that Justin Burke or Daniel Evans should be able to do the above just as well.)

  25. packpigskinfan23 09/06/2006 at 3:00 PM #

no Dan, Marcus Stones job is to lead. He is the leader of the team, like it or not. Andre Brown is the motivator… Stone always seemed to have bad first halfs last year, but would follow them up with good second halfs… teams(as many of you fans) underestimated him. he’s not Phillip Rivers, but I would rather have Stone under-center then Jay Davis anyday!

we’ve all heard the Stone critiques by now… I think its about time to put it to rest(at least till next weekend). its a bit sickening.
