Pack Picks Up Four Star SG/PF Maverick Rowan

NC State basketball picked up a quality player to fill its gap in the backcourt this afternoon:

Maverick_Rowan_Commits

Rowan has been described in various recruiting write-ups as a ‘sharp-shooter’ or a ‘scoring machine.’

Originally classed as a 2016 prospect, Rowan is already a high school graduate.  In June, he de-committed from Pitt and said that he was considering reclassifying to the 2015 class.

Hailing from Center Township, Pennsylvania, Rowan and his family relocated to the Fort Lauderdale area so that he could continue honing his skills against tougher competition.  He did just that and landed high on a lot of recruiting rankings. He averaged 29.5 points per game at Cardinal Gibbons HS in Florida last year, garnering a lot of attention as 247Sports’ seventh-ranked small forward and the 39th-best player in this year’s class.  ESPN had him ranked as #30 in its 2016 class.

Welcome to the WOLFPACK, Maverick. You are bringing some greatly needed skills to the team but please don’t let your name go to your head … THIS is a TEAM. Every player is important … the starting 5, the next 4 subs and the scout team. The players that you’ve mentioned and those that are returning to play are/were about NC STATE … not minutes. Just watch some old videos when TJ or Cat or BJ were on the sideline getting a breather or avoiding some overzealous ref … they were still totally in the game. To the coaching staff … great last minute grab.

Great pick up! I look forward to seeing MR light it up in the PNC this season.

Congrats to Rowan for making NC State his choice, now if we can get the 7 footer, it would be awesome. Any news on him?

This guy feels like a one and done, doesn’t he?
Well, even if he is, glad to have him in the red and white this year.
We need players, and if he can live up to his press clippings – fantastic.

No, he’s not athletic enough to be one and done. He can shoot lights out, but has lots of other things to work on. I feel he is a 3-4 year player for us.

From the tape, he already looks great in red and white. Reminds me of Buckets. Is his 3 consistent or is it on and off like TJ’s was?

Is he a shooting guard (SG) or power forward (PF)? Seems a contradiction.

As I read, he seems like a shooter – we had Scott Woo and then we had BSW. Can we call Maverick Woo Jr? Hopefully we plays some defense so we can add the D back to the name.

Good pick-up though, and I am happy to see him on board. Now if we can just keep him out of the jetwash.

I watched a few of his videos last night and here is the deal in my opinion. He is between a Wood and a Reddick. He is great at spot shooting and trailing the play and finding the open spot on the perimeter. He shows good coming off screens and hitting the mid range jumper. Also good at driving to the basket. Good at following his shot and getting offensive rebounds but I suppose those will be far and few between once he is in college. To put it in perspective I would say better than Wood was at this point. I wouldn’t even say he is that close to Reddick but he has the tools to become so because he comes off screens so much better than Wood ever could. If he can’t get off his shot coming around a screen he is able to take a few dribbles to the side or torwards the basket(step back or contnue to the rim) to create seperation from the defender. Videos don’t show much as a defender. Only when they get a block or a steal. So from that perspective we shall see. I have seen him listed at different heights. 6’6″ to 6’8″ and all around 200. He is not a one and done but he does want significant playing time his freshman year from the quotes I have seen.

Even more important than getting a 4-star recruit is that we likely have gotten a 4-year player. We need more of these guys.

He could be Scott Wood II, but it is very important to have an outside presence on the floor at all times.

There is hope yet for basketball. Maybe lots.

Hey, don’t you mean III? He could be White Black Scott Wood?

I do see him getting significant PT this year. As long as we can spread the minutes around, keep the twins, Abu, and Anya happy, I see this as a great TEAM. Only worried about potential logjams we have at forward.

^ AMEN. A great team, with a great (albeit really f-cking QUIET) leader in Cat. As long as their balls all drop quickly, I like our odds of breaking the title drought and winning the league.

YES, I DAMNED WELL SAID IT.

My word!!!! BJD95 – not just optimistic, but VERY optimistic!

    And I agree with him.
(about being great, winning the league is too much of a stretch for me)

Not easy for a long time Pack fan to jump on that bandwagon, no matter how much we’d like to.

Double bye is the first step, and I think that’s well within the realm of possibility.

Very good pick up and in my opinion our prize of this class (which also includes Dorin). I think he is a 4 year player and one like a Wood that other teams’ fans are going to think is here forever. I suspect that he’ll get significant minutes and shots this year. Can he play D? Remains to be seen.

I’m like Packfanistan. I think the goal for the season has to be getting that double bye. That would represent a consistently solid team, night in and out. That’s the next step for this program. I do think that like last year, we will be a dangerous team come tourney time. The three keys for whether we can take that next step seem to be keeping Cat healthy, how quickly we gel and whether we play any D.

Fine by me as long as it doesn’t result in “Laugh-in” at our expense by our opponents.

The Pep Band needs to learn the Maverick Theme song to play when he makes a “3”.

But on second thought, I always like Scott’s non-celebratory attitude … “yeah, it went in, that’s what I meant for it to do”
