Beck to Start @ BC

It doesn’t come as a surprise, but Coach Tom O’Brien confirmed today that redshirt sophomore, Harrison Beck will start at quarterback when the Wolfpack travels to Chestnut Hill to battle Boston College on Saturday. (You can click here for a review of BC’s performance vs Wake on Saturday).

Beck went 17-28 for 207 yards and two touchdowns playing one series of the first half and leading the Wolfpack to three touchdowns in the second half in Saturday’s loss to Central Florida. He threw one interception on a hail mary on the last play of the game.

The Wolfpack, already playing without Toney Baker for the rest of the season, opened in Las Vegas as a two touchdown underdog for Saturday.

I like the decisiveness… thanks TOB.

I like the idea of going with Beck as the starter because of all the reasons that have been pointed out in other posts why Evans is a better backup than starter. Just look at how UCF had to stop stacking the box in the second half against Beck compared to 8/9 in the box with Evans. It allows State to run the ball behind a questionable OL who appears to have a tough enough time trying to control the LOS. (see 3 attempts of 4th and inches where we went backwards)

I’m still on the fence though as to if in a game like against UCF, where Evans just wasn’t able to get it done, do we continue with Beck giving him the season (and hard knocks) to gain experience for the next couple of years or do we experiment with a “who’s hotter right now” dual QB system between Beck/Burke?

Can Daniel punt? How is he as a receiver? That first half performance really did away with his early off the bench heroics at home vs. BC and FSU last year only to fade with 7 straight losses. Where did that confidence go? Defintely not “Sublime”

I recall Coach Holtz starting out badly in his first 3 games. Then I went to game 4 and there were all these new names playing. We had a winning 8-3 season. Not that history will repeat — but good coaches like TOB make the tough decisions to pass over those who have put in their time (to lose) and put in kids who are willing to play harder or smarter.

A good coach is one who can manage his resources and make changes. TOB will do that. While this year does not look good — I think there will be a few surprizes.

“BoKnows”, remember that well with him playing both Bruce Shaw and Dave Buckey at QB. Just wish we had Willie Burden, Charlie Young, and Stan Fritts in the backfield.

Not trying to kick Daniel when he is down — cause I think he has the fortitude, character and ability to mature. But for now — he’s either lost confidence, focus or something intangible.

I think injuries are going to be a recurrent problem this year as the O-line fails to block and protect. So after Beck or Burke’s bells get rung a few times — Daniel will have a chance to play again. Hopefully, the outcome will make him a hero again and not a goat.

Does anyone ever remember a worst 1st half in WP history? Other than that Baylor game after we beat Mack Brown and Texas in the first game of that year? I only got to listen to us spotting them 3-4 TDs early on. I did not have to watch it.

Both halves of the Michigan bowl game were pretty bad. The difference was that they were a talented team.

Worst half against a mediocre bad team…yeah, probably Baylor.

Wasn’t the first half of the minnesota game pretty bad? I recall that being a comeback although my recollection of “holiday events” is occasionally, err, fuzzy.

Beck certainly earned the start. It will be very interesting to see him against a good defense playing him straight up.

Beck, I agree, earned this start. It will be interesting to see what both he and Bible do starting out even in a game, and not down big. that adjustments made in the second half were good, lets hope a week of work brings many more.

Concerning Daniel, was he actually a bonafide recruit or was his recruitment a ‘legacy gift’?
(Now I’m sure he was a fine HS QB but that doesn’t make him a 3** either).

Badger – we scored right before the half, so it was 24-8.

Goldenchain – He committed on signing day after we missed on someone else and had a scholarship free.

Noah. Ok, I didn’t remember the score but recalled being down pretty big early. Not as bad a half as Saturday for sure, and at least it was against a beefier opponent.
