Schedule Stuff

On the heels of this great entry regarding strength of football schedules in the 2007 season…

…850TheBuzz gives us their annual ACC Helmet Schedule. I downloaded one and printed it off this morning.

If you have ESPN INsider then you can view Bruce Feldman’s look at the ten toughest non-conference schedules in the country.

While we are on the topic:

Football – it has been announced that NC State will host Gardner-Webb in Carter-Finley in 2009. We have updated our perpetual ‘Out of conference football schedule entry’ for your viewing pleasure.

Basketball– Similarly our 2007 Basketball Schedule Entry – most recently having added Presbyterian College – can be seen by clicking here.

Would it be a good thing if ECU beats UNC in Greenville on Sept. 8th?

I’m thinking I would enjoy that.

With Woffard this year and GW next year, it seem obvious that we are scheduling these to assure “home only” game contracts. Most teams want a home and home but not these guys.

Also everyone is scrambling with the recently approved 12 game schedule to find teams to play. And no one wants to play 6 or 7 away. This game (agreeably weak and not what I would like) gives the pack extra home revenue for the program.

Many teams have some really weak teams on their schedule right now.

Tell me again what the problem with playing Gardner Webb is?

With the exception of 1996, haven’t we pretty much ALWAYS had at least one non-conference game against some scrub opponent?

06 – App State and Akron
    05 – E. Kentucky
    04 – Richmond
    03 – W. Carolina
    02 – E. Tennessee State and UMass
    01 – Ohio and SMU
00 – Ark. State and SMU
    99 – William and Mary
    98 – Ohio and Baylor
    97 – Northern Illinois
96 – (non conf. opponents were Purdue, Alabama and ECU – we lost all three)
    95 – Marshall
94 – WCU and Bowling Green
    93 – Marshall
    92 – App. State
91 – Kent State and Marshall
90 – WCU and App State
    89 – MTSU
    88 – WCU
    87 – ETSU
    86 – WCU
    85 – Furman

While I dont necessarily agree we need to play 4 top 5 teams OOC every year, I would like to see tougher games on the schedule than Gardner Webb.

However, all the big teams/schools do it. Look at Florida – every year they have 2 or 3 cupcakes that they score 70 in the 1st half play everyone including the waterboy in the 2nd half.

  6. JimValvano 07/13/2007 at 11:43 AM #

I agree with Noah…though Akron was a team a lot of people figured would be in the top 25, and App was coming of a National Title (remember how well Marshall did when moving up after their national titles).

With all that having been said…I am almost positive that most Div. 1 teams use the extra game on their schedule to bring in a cupcake so that the guys see some live action, to guarantee they won’t lose, and to build confidence. That was the original argument against the 12 game schedule in the first place.

  7. JimValvano 07/13/2007 at 11:45 AM #

Plus…as a Gardner-Webb alum…I’m glad to see them get the opportunity to get torn to shreds by the Pack.

  8. McPete 07/13/2007 at 1:20 PM #

    Akron – Top 25?
    In what, women’s volleyball?

  9. packbackr04 07/13/2007 at 1:40 PM #

    table tennis?
    gang banging?

i dont know what they were in top 25 in either.. after chuck lost his cool following the loss to Akron, saying they were going surprise alot of people, didnt they get torn to shreds for most of the rest of the season?

  10. RAWFS 07/13/2007 at 1:47 PM #

Try money. See: moolah, cash, windfall, shakedown.

Season tickets holders are obligated to buy the tickets as part of the package. Thus, revenues are guaranteed. That’s all the twelfth game was ever all about.

  11. noah 07/13/2007 at 1:48 PM #

They were a bowl team. I don’t think anyone thought they’d be a top-25 teams.

From what was said in the N&O this morning, this is purely financial. If you want seven home games so you can expect X amount of revenue, this is the cheapest way to do it.

  12. StateFans 07/13/2007 at 2:09 PM #

I can’t imagine anyone complaining about us scheduling but a single ‘sure win’ every year.

  13. noah 07/13/2007 at 2:10 PM #

Not only a “sure win”, but a “sure win that generates about $1.5 million in ticket sales.

  14. BoKnowsNCS71 07/13/2007 at 2:11 PM #

Noah — true we put some teams on schedule that looked like scrubs but a few were not. Marshall amost beat us and they were good at one time. Still ok now.

I think UMASS had just just moved up to our Division in 2002. First year and we needed a last second miracle to beat them.

And I think that 85 Furman team was better then us (wasn’t that a WP loss to then Furman coach Sheridan?)

  15. BoKnowsNCS71 07/13/2007 at 2:28 PM #

Akron was in our Division also. And I was following them from the preceding season and knew they were more talented then anyone gave them credit for being. With George O’Leary coaching the Central Florida – I’m uncomfortable about that game.

I don’t know Wofford and Gardner-Webb just sound like we’re playing Broughton and Ravenscroft. Just a bias on me I guess.

  16. JimValvano 07/13/2007 at 2:46 PM #

Akron was picked to win the MAC East by almost every major magazine, and I’m pretty sure they ended up with only 5 wins last year.
The only two major magazines not to pick them to win the East were Athlon and Phil Steele. That means that Lindy, Sporting News, CBS Sportsline, Street and Smiths, and BlueRibbon all picked them to win the MAC East.
I’m not saying this makes them good. I’m just backing up what I said. Furthermore, I believe Phil Steele predicted Akron would beat us.

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 07/13/2007 at 2:52 PM #

It makes them experienced. And in a early season game with no injuries and strong legs — playing a team that can’t find its offense and turns over the ball in at a double digit ratio for the year — and “playing those non-qualifiers” (sorry LOL) — that’s a recipe for an upset.

did anyone hear lee on the morgan patrick show on 620 at lunch today? amongst other things, he said that evitimov, powell, simmons, grundy, and other former players are all in town, working out meeting with the new staff and what not.

according to illian, he’s been watching the team and keeping up with the new recruits, degand is going to be a great pg, johnny thomas is the most athletic player he has ever seen, he has a 44″ vertical, and jj is an incredible low post player. he thinks we will be very very good this year.

  19. noah 07/13/2007 at 4:52 PM #

In 1990, we beat WCU 67-0. They didn’t get a first down.

  20. noah 07/13/2007 at 4:53 PM #

I don’t know why that got truncated…here’s the rest of that post.

On one play, Terry Jordan threw an interception, and got so ticked off, he ran the linebacker down and hit him so hard that the linebacker fumbled and had to leave the game with a concussion.

Think Gardner Webb will be THAT bad?

We beat App. State that same year in a mid-season game by a 56-0 score. Good thing we scheduled those games too…without them, we wouldn’t have gone to the All-American Bowl and beaten a good S. Miss team (with Brett Favre) in one of the better bowl games of the season.

I had a good time at both of those games. I really don’t know what some people are bitching about.

  21. lush 07/13/2007 at 5:07 PM #

everyone had a great time at the e. kentucky game too. wasnt it toney baker who absolutely rocked one of their db’s world. it was one of the best hits of the year and it was delivered by our running back

  22. PackerInRussia 07/13/2007 at 5:09 PM #

“I think UMASS had just just moved up to our Division in 2002. First year and we needed a last second miracle to beat them.”

Not to be picky, but we actually won that game 56-24. UMass did way outplay us in terms of effort and had the talent level been close to equal they could have won that game. Again, not trying to be picky.

  23. noah 07/13/2007 at 5:17 PM #

I think they’re confusing that with the UConn game where we had to get a last-second INT and runback by one of the linebackers (Dash?) for a 24-17 win.

  24. dbo2874 07/13/2007 at 7:19 PM #

anybody else bet that noah listed those teams above off memory?

  25. CaptainCraptacular 07/13/2007 at 8:20 PM #

*runback by one of the linebackers (Dash?) for a 24-17 win.*

    Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay (sp?).
