We Could’ve Been a Contender…

A friend of mine passed along a link to this interesting site. If college football chose to crown it’s champ like boxing (really, is that any more ridiculous than the BCS “mythical national championship” or just freaking voting on it, like for homecoming queen?), NC State would have briefly held the title in 1999 (toggle down to view our reign), after toppling Texas in a classic 12-round battle. The site’s full explanation of how it works is here.

I used to be a playoff guy, but I have completely flipped my opinion. The BCS worked perfectly this year. There might be a year or two every now and then where a plus one scenario would help clear up the title picture(LSU’s title year for example). However, the regular season is so exciting and important in college football now that I don’t think they should make any drastic changes to the post-season.

Looks like we held the title in 1989, too.

Funny that we don’t see on the goats anywhere on this list – at least from 1980 to present. I thought they were the ones will the illustrious past.

    That’s pretty neat, actually.

Too bad it doesn’t carry the banner-hanging heft of, say, the Helms Foundation …

Good work, 97. Got to love those plucky Tarheels, it only took them until their 6th title shot before they at least landed a punch!

    O’Cain finally gets some credit.
