Some TOB Follow-Up

As some of the better bloggers out there reflect on last football season there continues to be a lot of Tom O’Brien news to make sure we don’t ignore over the last day or so.

I think that Pack Pride has been doing a good job of breaking down certain aspects of the TOB hiring. One topic that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention (because there is little to be said right now) is the potential composition of TOB’s staff in Raleigh. ACCNow tackles the topic in this blog entry today.

The feeling in Boston is that if former Massachusetts coach Mark Whipple, now the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach, is named the BC coach, O’Brien’s staff may move en masse to Raleigh. If it’s not Whipple, certain assistants could elect to stay at BC depending on the new coach.

BC defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani has been named interim head coach for the bowl game. Should Spaziani later get the head job, it’s expected some of the defensive assistants probably would stay with him.

While we are talking about TOB’s staff, SFN would love to see the name of Steve Logan appear on the radar as TOB’s Offensive Coordinator. Evidently, Logan and O’Brien have a relationship of mutual respect and knowledge of with each other. Ignoring for a moment Logan’s obvious offensive genius and ability to groom quarterbacks, his relationships and familiarity within North Carolina High School Football would be a huge boon to TOB’s program in Raleigh.

Logan seems to be holding out for a fat pay check to get back into the college game. Between Tom O’Brien AND Sidney Lowe NC State is getting a relative bargain with coaching salaries – shelling out only (approximately) $2 million for BOTH after reportedly being prepared to offer as much as $2 million to a single basketball coach in the spring. Point is – State should be able to pay Logan’s asking price (rumored to be between $300k and $500k) if we deemed it necessary.

Similarly, the N&O ran a great article on Friday morning discussing TOB and his staff’s shrewd ability to evaluate talent.

O’Brien and his staff earned a reputation as shrewd recruiters in the past 10 years, said Tom Lemming, national football recruiting editor for CSTV.com.

“I had them rated the No. 1 talent evaluating staff in the country last year,” Lemming said. “There is limited talent in the Northeast, and Boston College’s academic standards are high, but they were able to quickly evaluate talent, start recruiting and sign kids.”

Lemming said that after the Eagles beat Notre Dame four straight times, from 2001 to 2004, the Notre Dame staff under former coach Tyrone Willingham closely monitored BC’s recruiting.

“Notre Dame seemed to target BC recruits and then zoom in about December,” Lemming said. “It was like, ‘Those BC coaches know what they’re doing.’ It was a compliment to BC’s recruiting.”

Allen Wallace, national recruiting editor for Scout.com and publisher of SuperPrep magazine, said O’Brien and his assistants “get off the dime fast” in recruiting, identifying who can play, who best fits their system, then making a quick move on them.

“Sometimes, Boston College was offering California kids before the Pac-10 schools even showed up,” Wallace said.

Additionally, Dave Glenn shared some insight in “Why O’Brien Picked Pack, Part One”

Fan Base — This was one topic O’Brien could safely address at his press conference. As a general rule of thumb, large state universities such as N.C. State have more alumni and thus more populous fan bases than small, private schools such as Boston College. When the Eagles have a home sellout in football, 44,500 people fill Alumni Stadium. Against Buffalo this fall, in a nasty storm, only 14,682 showed up. Even during a 3-9 season, Wolfpack fans mostly filled Carter-Finley Stadium, with crowds ranging from roughly 54,000 to 58,000 at seven home games, whether the opponent was Akron or Florida State. The fans also have made a lot of noise in recent years, sometimes even approaching a level normally the domain of traditional football powers Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech.

“Just to walk into (Carter-Finley Stadium), and the enthusiasm in the stadium here, is incredible,” O’Brien said. “I’ve taken teams to State College and beaten Penn State there in front of 100,000 people. I’ve taken a team to Notre Dame when they were No. 4 in the country and came out in the green jerseys. The excitement that fateful night I was here in September (for the BC-NCSU game) was as good as any place I’ve ever been.”

Lastly, The Daily Press wrote an article that we didn’t much care for due to its’ demeaning view of NC State.

I would just like to say I fully support the notion for Steve Logan, proven recruiter of solid talent and developer of QB talent as well.

That said, after listening to his radio show pretty frequently, he seems very content in NFL Europe, although Im sure with enough money he could be talked into Raleigh quiet possibly.

For those who will see the name steve Logan and cringe… do some reading on him first

“Steve Logan returns for a third season in the NFL Europe League and a first campaign as offensive coordinator of the Rhein Fire. Spent the two previous seasons as quarterbacks coach of the Berlin Thunder.
In each of his two seasons in Berlin, Logan helped his quarterbacks top the NFLEL passer ratings as Dave Ragone (97.5 rating in 2005) and Rohan Davey (106.4 rating in 2004) earned All-NFLEL honors and were named the league’s Offensive Players of the Year”

    ok i’m done for real

In the absolute right situtation maybe Logan would be interested, but that’s not the first question. First…would TOB be interested in him? Maybe if Dana Bible does not join him here in Raleigh…but why wouldn’t Bible come? TOB’s assistants have been with him a long time and they obviously work well together (the stats show that BC had the second ranked offense in the ACC this year). DG has mentioned that BC has had sort of VT-like stability, and that certainly is something terrific to bring to the Wolpack table. But if for some reason Bible decides not to come, Logan would be an intriguing choice…maybe an excellent choice.

I would love Steve Logan as our OC!

  5. RickJ 12/15/2006 at 7:44 AM #

Buck – The majority of BC fans do not like Dana Bible. There is even some speculation that their AD tried to get TOB to fire Bible. I would love to see him and one other assistant not come to Raleigh. Add Logan and retain Cignetti and I would be ready for kick off.

    From today’s N&O:

“I had them (BC) rated the No. 1 talent evaluating staff in the country last year,” Tom Lemming said.

“Allen Wallace, national recruiting editor for Scout.com said TOB and his assistants get off the diem fast in recruiting, identifying who can play, who best fits their system, then making a quick move on them.”

Let’s hope they keep some of the coaches like Dick Portee who have been doing things right with our Backs for years. Portee has been in Raleigh for years (except for a brief stint with the Browns and I believe Butch Davis at the time) and our backs have been one thing on our team that hasn’t really been “broke”.

Paying Logan significantly more than the D coordinator, or on a distorted scale as the rest of the staff could cause some friction between the assistants. I would imagine TOB would want to avoid that.

  8. StateFans 12/15/2006 at 8:09 AM #

^ I think that is why you also give him an “Assistant Head Coach” title to further helpt justify the position.

  9. Red_Terrors 12/15/2006 at 8:14 AM #

I’m for Logan as OC as well. And StateFans has a good idea in giving him the additonal title of assistant head coach. I’m excited for the upcoming season and seeing with TOB will do. It was also great to see him in Reynolds the other night. The way the we as fans welcomed him in had to make him feel at home. Its too bad Fowler was in most of the pictures my wife took of TOB that night.

STEVE LOGAN-is an absolute nut-job. Yesterday- interviewed on the PacMan Show Logan stated… “The only job I’d take in college football is head coach at a BCS school… I’d sign the biggest contract I could get- and work like heck to go 0-12 (& get paid).”

Those are Logan’s EXACT words. Don’t believe it? Check out PacMan’s audio from yesterday or email him to verify. This guy is an absolute wacko with an ego like you wouldn’t believe. I’ve interacted with the guy personally on multiple occasions. Offensive mind… Yes- sometimes. Really more of a QB coach. His stubborness to his own “genius” and refusal innovate his methods cost East Carolina entire seasons (see: Paul Troth QB nosedive)… and eventually his job. Beyond all the hype, the guy NEVER won a CUSA title (not even close in cusa). He would pick up 1 marquee win & then lose to 3 inferior CUSA opponents.

His name in North Carolina High School circles… is actuall HORRIBLE. He quit recruiting his last two years and told NC High School coaches “if your kids want to play for me they’ll come to my summer camp and I’ll evaluate and make my decision there.” By the end of his tenure he had burned bridges across this state & the high school guys don’t forget how they are treated. Many call him a pompus a**.

Bottomline: There are some glimmers of upside with Logan- but nothing a well diciplined coach couldn’t handle for a 1/3 the price. If Logan is added- TOB would spend and as much time managing Logan- as the team. That’s not the kind of team dynamic needed for this staff. We just got rid of that problem.

When was the last time BC played Penn State? I don’t think its been in the last 8 years. They did the renovation in ’99 so, I don’t think O’brien has played in front of 100,000 there…

  12. packfanstk 12/15/2006 at 8:51 AM #

I’m a Christian, but I’ll feel a lot better about TOB if he leaves his Bible behind.

  13. Woof Wolf 12/15/2006 at 9:10 AM #

BC played at Penn State on September 6, 2003. and won 27-14. They beat them again in Boston in 2004.

    TomCat,

Thanks so much for the insight!

I think the great thing about hiring Tom O’Brien is that we dont have to sit here and worry about who he may or may not hire! I trust him fully to hire the right folks who can work well with him and get the job done. I think as fans we sometimes forget that first part….”work well with him.” Sometimes we may think that a guy is the greatest assistant in the world, but ultimately maybe the personalities of the head coach and assistant just dont mesh. We have all agreed that a very important aspect of building a solid program is continuity. Personally, I believe you are better off with decent assistants who work well together and stick around for several years than you are with this “offensive genius” or that “defensive guru” wh are prima donnas and are gone when the next cool job opens up.

Tom O’Brien is a fantastic coach with a ton of experience in ACC level fotball. We dont need to watch him like a hawk. He will get quality assistants who work well together and with him. I would be shocked if 75% of his assistants didnt come from BC.

Doesn’t Logan still bear the weight of the friday night football game locally?

  18. lush 12/15/2006 at 10:33 AM #

i agree with tomcat. why is everyone so fascinated with this guy? because he is on the radio? gimme a break, he was fired from ecu for god sakes. and i beleive his “genius” offense was based around a running back who put up 350 yards on us. when harley was gone so was logans offense. ever wonder why he is europe? maybe cause he couldnt cut here? plus he went for two against us solely to get to 50 points when we were getting our ass kicked. keep that “genius” in europe

  19. partialqualifier 12/15/2006 at 10:40 AM #

    As for TomCat…..

I have never like Steve Logan. He likes to hear himself talk too much. I think he is just upset that no college on earth is asking him to coach, so now he is trying to play badass! He was fired from ECU! That really was all I ever needed to know. Getting fired from ECU is kinda like getting fired as an elemenatary PE teacher….the only way to get fired is to sleep with a student or to lose total respect by your empolyer!

Furthermore….hearing Logan suggest that he is holding out for a BCS job is kinda like hearing Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation claim that he is holding out for a managerial job!! Get real Logan!

  20. Mike 12/15/2006 at 10:52 AM #

Not that I have any inside connectioons but word on the street at the time was Logan did nto get along wiht the admin at EZU so they told him to pack. Basically they told him something, and he told them to mind their own business – it was his team. If they didnt like it, they could fire him, so they did.

His coaching ability has never been questioned but the ego has. He has burned some bridges, and yes the Friday night factor was big. I dont think he was for the Friday nghts, CUSA forced it upon the teams. It still created a problem wiht NCHSAA and by default his recruiting suffered.

  21. tractor57 12/15/2006 at 10:58 AM #

Personally I trust TOB to assemble an outstanding group of assistant coaches. The speculation about the staff is interesting but I’m sure I’ll be happy with the whole package. That said I would like to see Dick Portee retained if he wants to join the new staff.

  22. class of 74 12/15/2006 at 11:08 AM #

TOB will assemble a quality staff and I doubt very seriously that SL will be a part of that staff. Remember before he was a HC he was George Welsh’s OC, so the guy knows something about offense. I’m not worried about TOB’s staff not in the least.

  23. GrandWolf 12/15/2006 at 11:13 AM #

Agree w/ CaptainCraptacular. While assistants do get varying salaries for whatever reason, are they not typically in the same ballpark across the assistant staff?

Seems to me if Logan came in knocking down $300 to $500K, there could be some “problems”. However, I do agree in principle that Logan would be a huge benefit as a college OC for a Div 1 team in the NC area.

  24. BJD95 12/15/2006 at 11:20 AM #

It certainly is nice to have a coach that doesn’t inspire me to be concerned about his hires, or think he needs hand holding in any way. I trust Coach O’Brien to make the right hires. He’s been around, and had success. He fully understands what he needs to do to adapt to coaching in the Southeast generally, and NC, specifically.

  25. Big Dave 12/15/2006 at 11:23 AM #

Well, one positive of this hire is that we had to activate his network port this week so that he can access the internet. We have a system here at NCSU to where a person’s port gets deactivated if not used in 90 days. Amato’s was deactivated;)
