Live Blogging – Wake Forest/NC State

4:20pm: Wow, are we ever flat early. Fortunately, Wake isn’t any good, and thus only up two.

4:22: Repeat after me – don’t let Justin Gray beat you. Nobody else is capable of doing so (yes, that includes Eric Williams). And is it just me, or does it seem like weeks since Ilian Evtimov scored a field goal?

4:26: Contrast Evtimov’s stroke to Atsur’s. It’s night and day.

4:27: Atsur, showing some upper body strength denying Williams down low. Yeah, he fouled him, but still…

4:29: Now THAT is what Big Ced needs to do on the offensive end. He sure as hell doesn’t need to be setting picks 19 feet from the basket, especially with 2 fouls.

4:30: Gray is getting frustrated. Good sign.

4:34: Wife called, had to set up the other TV for the kids. Hope I didn’t miss anything important (like a 3rd foul on Ced).

4:36: 2 fouls on Brack. That’s not good.

4:37: An Evtimov 3 is not a good option with numbers. Hale’s layup is. Wake by TEN? WTF?

4:39: Slow defensive help by Bethel leads to a cheap third foul for Big Ced – on [insert first name] f’ing Hale! This looks like a Sendek team of years past.

4:42: I need a mood-altering substance of some variety. This is absurd.

4:45: Atsur from 28 feet out, comes up short. What, does he think he’ll get 4 from there? Unless your last name is Redick, Childress, or Monroe, that’s a terrible shot.

4:46: Just a thought – after the UNC and GT games (and this first half), it’s clear we don’t believe in playing defense on a Saturday (than God the GW game was moved to Friday night). Are our guys Seventh Day Adventists? Orthodox Jews? We had better pray for Friday/Sunday brackets come March.

4:48: Cheap foul on Drum, who I could have sworn was one of my favorite lefty bloggers, not an ACC basketball player. Without FTs, we’d barely be in double figures.

4:50: Phantom 3rd foul on Ellis – looked like he got the board cleanly. McCauley swishes a pair.

4:51: Anheuser Busch doesn’t want you to drink very much of their product. No, they really mean that.

4:54: Evtimov finally scores from the field! Then clunks the FT. Wake starting to teeter.

4:57: This just in – Wake’s JV squad really sucks. As bad a first half as NC State played, one has to feel good about only being down 5 at the break. However, with Ced and Atsur saddled with 3 fouls, it’s too soon to predict a win. But I think we’ve taken the Deacs’ best shot.

5:15: Steve Martin answers my question – it’s HARVEY Hale.

5:16: Big Ced down low – lather, rinse, repeat.

5:21: Don’t let up just because you got the game tied. Step on the throat, damn it!

5:23: Have I mentioned how much I hate the fast break three? It bears repeating.

5:28: Is it just me, or is Cam’s 16 the quietest 16 in the history of basketball? 4 on Big Ced. Fuck.

5:30: Bullshit foul called on Grant. I hate it when the refs go crazy with the whistle.

5:31: Deja vu against Bethel.

5:33: State’s in the bonus with 13:06 to play. Amazing.

5:34: Cam seems to have usurped Atsur’s “quiet assassin” role. He’s really kept us alive today.

5:36: Somebody tell Evtimov this isn’t his Harlem Globetrotters tryout, for fuck’s sake.

5:43: Game entering a lull.

5:44: Atsur re-asserting himself. We really, really need that.

5:47: I predict we will pull away before the 4 minute timeout. Defense much better in the second half.

5:49: Notice what happened when we started aggressively taking the ball into the lane – both in transition and the half-court set. Let’s not forget that lesson, Pack.

5:50: My prediction was pretty accurate, yes? Wake has thrown in the towel now. Their mental toughness is highly suspect. This game by no means impressed me, but the team’s overall mental toughness and ability to fight through sluggishness is encouraging.

5:52: Perhaps I spoke too soon. Who in the hell is guarding the walk-on? He has FOURTEEN POINTS.

5:53: Grant with the dagger, takes the walk-on to school. Nice play to stay in attack mode rather than trying to kill clock. You can’t play not to lose.

5:55: Evtimov back in for Grant? WTF?

5:56: Evtimov nails 3, I look like a moron.

6:00: NOW it is the time to bleed clock. Better game management than I am used to from Sendek. Nice isolation by Atsur.

6:04: Idiot announcer Dan Boner (spelling intentional) claims the key to NC State being an elite team is getting consistent play from Evtimov. Has he really seen us play our better games this year?

6:07: Wow, almost let Wake back in the game. Need to be cleaner with the ballhandling. This is also a good time to mention that, as you all know, Duke lost today. It’s always nice when Billy Packer calls a Duke loss, since he’s the only commentator who’s not upset by the end result.

6:11: What a great play to finish the game from Cam. THAT is how you play with a championship mentality. Break the other team’s will. Don’t give an inch. Final score: NC State 92, Wake Forest 82.

It’s time to start drinking heavily.

This is bullshit. What a crap “effort” so far. What happened to our D? This is a joke.

  2. Jamie 01/21/2006 at 4:49 PM #

This is actually under the “Fun Stuff” heading???

  3. BJD95 01/21/2006 at 4:51 PM #

I think it’s fun, at least for me – more fun than just watching. Obviously, I gave it the heading BEFORE Wake started drilling us.

  4. Jamie 01/21/2006 at 4:55 PM #

Yes, that’s very obvious. Maybe we can finish the first half nicely……

  5. TVP 01/21/2006 at 4:56 PM #

Good run there to end the half but WTF was Evtimov doing on that last posession? You’re a 12th year senior man you should know better!

We’re being outrebounded 28-13 now, kids.

  6. Jamie 01/21/2006 at 4:58 PM #

The rebounding margin is understandable with all of our bigs in trouble. I think Evtimov is starting to miss that 20 pounds.

  7. BJD95 01/21/2006 at 5:02 PM #

Losing the 20 pounds didn’t seem to make him any faster, that’s for sure.

  8. TVP 01/21/2006 at 5:06 PM #

Ev had to play almost the entire first half (19 minutes) because of the foul trouble. Responded with a 1-6 from the field. Add that to the fact that he’s arguably the worst rebounding forward in college basketball and kept getting abused by Ellis.

  9. Fish 01/21/2006 at 5:32 PM #

Get ready for a 6-10 season and a 0-fer against the the Big Three. Our football and basketball programs are a disgrace!

  10. TVP 01/21/2006 at 5:33 PM #

^Don’t be stupid. 6-10? Come on.

We need to get that 4th foul on Williams and get him out of the game.

  11. TVP 01/21/2006 at 5:35 PM #

No more evtimov please….We could have taken the lead there.

  12. TVP 01/21/2006 at 5:51 PM #

I can’t believe the way this Drum kid is abusing us. 14 points!!!! He wouldn’t see minute 1 for us.

  13. Mr O 01/21/2006 at 6:20 PM #

The first half was the worst I have seen all season long. However, coming back from 13 points with Ced and Brackman in foul trouble and then win going away was a good step for the team. Gavin Grant is really coming on strong and is going to be a key for us. He brings a lot to the table in terms of skills, athleticism and matchup problems for the other team.

Cameron played great. It is interesting looking back at the NC class of Bennerman, Gray, E. Williams, and T. Strickland. They have all had nice careers. Their senior years was one of the last years I followed recruiting closely. Cam and Trent played together at Hargrave, Justin went to Oak Hill and E. Williams stayed in NC and played at Wake Forest. What coud have been if Gray and Williams had chosen NC State?

what a difference a home game makes. we feed so much off the crowd to pull out home victories, we turned it on around the 9 minute mark. this is similar to what Duke generally does, separating themselves from the other team once fatigue sets in. Fatigue can be ignored when you have 20k people screaming for you….

Nice job on holding it down with Ced on the bench. And we were able to win without the 3-point shot falling. Go Pack. This ain’t your father’s wolfpack basketball team (another one of those games we would have lost in past years).

  15. TVP 01/21/2006 at 6:49 PM #

Winning with 12 minutes out of Ced…Great teams find ways to win when things aren’t going their way.

Fantastic game out of Cam – 26 points and he led the charge on Gray (who ended up 5 of 22 from the field).

BJD95 – Just got back from the game and really enjoyed this live entry. There is no way I could do this. Crazy game that was really affected by the way it was called. Weird calls both ways and as hard as this is to say – Duke Edsel was a great referee tonight in comparison to the other two.

Many of you have been saying great things about Cam that I haven’t always appreciated. I’m really coming around now! There is nothing better than an NC State senior having a great year.

I would say a word about Illian – he played an incredible game today on defense. With the foul trouble on Ced & Brackman, he was stuck with some very difficult match-ups. He was also instrumental in containing Gray with his help on the high ball screens. As painful as it was to see Drum lighting us up, it was better than Gray.

There was a lot of Evtimov bashing here earlier – but he was a silent key today. The three he hit was huge. He still makes some strange plays at strange times, but IMHO, he’s a guy getting the most out of what he has. I’m glad he’s worn red for the last 5 years.

One thing good about tonight’s game – we won shooting poorly from behind the arc and w/out alot of time from Big Ced.

“5:36: Somebody tell Evtimov this isn’t his Harlem Globetrotters tryout, for fuck’s sake.”

I love it. Heh. i have noticed lately his baby hook and slick shots have not been falling. But neither have his 3s. I saw the comment also about his “stroke”, so maybe he is in some sort of slump. Also Dan Bonner said (commentator) he should go to the basket with authority. Not really his game though, he’s a finesse player, always has been. And didn’t he lose something like 20 pounds for this season? I would think he would be less effective down in the post/paint with a lighter frame. I dunno, having an excellent passer down low in the last 2 years was definitely a good thing. A “go-pack” pre-season quote said something along the lines of him losing the weight and being more mobile, moving from forward to guard, since that is where his professional career will be.

Cheers to him but maybe it has been an adjustment. All i know is he is one the best sharp-shooters in the ACC. Although i did not pick up on it while watching the game, saw some comments on his defense. That’s definitely one way to make up for poor shooting, good D.

Evtimov would be a bigger asset to the team if he’d stop forcing offense (rushed 3s or circus stuff) and focused on passing and taking OPEN looks for 3. And I’m not saying he’s a bad player – right now, he’s a complementary player (unlike what Boner thinks) who is trying to do too much.

And Evtimov is not the key to our offense whatsoever – that’s the troika of Ced, Atsur, and Cam. It has been that way against all non-lightweight opponents ALL SEASON.

  20. site admin 01/22/2006 at 9:44 AM #

I don’t think Eric Williams would have done much in our offense

  21. JSIMON 01/22/2006 at 10:02 AM #

Isn’t it amazing how one great player — like Chris Paul — can make such a difference in a program? Last year the Deacs were in the top 5 most of the season and this year they’re in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament. Granted, they lost some other seniors that were key too — Downey and Levy — but what a drop. And with all the fuss made over Prosser dominating in-state recruiting what now? Add in punching guys in the nuts, throwing elbows, and unforgivingly throwing gum at fans and you have to wonder how far the Deacs drop next year when they lose Williams and Gray and bring in a suspect recruiting class.

  22. Mr. O 01/23/2006 at 8:52 AM #

    E. Williams would have given us one of the top post players in the ACC the last 4 years. He doesn’t really fit an uptempo system like Wake’s either, but he is still arguably the top big guy in the ACC and can get 20 and 10 any night out. Herb clearly likes to go in the post when he has a guy who can score down there. Williams would have given us that for 4 years.

Jsimon: Their recruiting class is pretty solid. I wouldn’t call it suspect, but I would agree that it probably won’t be good enough to replace what they are losing.
