Our defense has created their shooting percentage in the second half. Easy turnovers and poor transition defense will make anybody look awesome
I just do not understand what is a foul. Lee drives gets pushed and they do not call it.
Every time Pitt dirves they seem to call itWell, that should about do it. I realize there’s still over 5 minutes left, but this is not a team that’s going to make up double digits this close to the end.
The more I watch, the less impressed I am with Gottfried’s coaching. Pitt made adjustments at halftime, what did Gottfried do? Whatever it was, it’s not working.
This is the reason I have been saying we will not win more than 5 conference games…too many liabilities and a big one is a point guard.
Losing two straight games against good, but not great, opponents at home, I think it’s clear that this team has no shot at making the NCAA tournament.
Those who were suggesting State could win 11-12 more games this season were dreaming.
Gray – I think you may be right. Pitt is showing how it is done. Defend, rebound and get out in transition.
Gott desperately needs to improve d. Otherwise, I don’t see us having the success we have had the last 2 years.
A tale of two halves….It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going to the ACC cellar.
I roomed with some SEC guys for several years while Gottfried was at Bama’ and watched a good bit of SEC basketball during that time. This is about par for the course for what you can expect from his teams. Rarely will he blow anybody out, so never get excited after a quick surge (see start of today’s game). His teams simply don’t defend well enough to separate themselves from efficient teams, his teams also tend to have sloppy, unforced errors, lapses in focus, and there are questionable substitution patterns. Notice I didn’t criticize the offense. When the ball goes in, which is what he excels at, then it masks some of his defensive weaknesses. Also note that I think he’s an above average coach.
But I laughed when some fairly outspoken folks on here talked about how last year’s lineups had weaknesses, were overrated, didn’t have the parts to play better defense. Once he recruits his own players, develops them, and roots out the knuckle heads, we’ll really get a good idea of how good a coach he is. Cough.
Gottfried tolerates too much crap in my opinion. Same with this team. 18-22 year old kids learn fundamentals and how to play the “right way” by working their rears off in practice, by coaches reinforcing the proper way to play by rewarding players who practice and play the “right way.” When you don’t, you don’t play. Or you get jerked and sit your ass on the pine. Yes, what we saw today is a little about youth, but it’s also a lot about coaching.
After a 17-2 start, the Pack was was outscored 72 to 45. State’s defense was awful. Pitt had 15 layups and two dunks. Poor shot selection, sloppy passing, and out of control PG play on offense. Big improvement in FT % was a plus today. 6 maybe 7 conference wins. Odds that TL will still be here next year with the limited minutes he is seeing?

Comments from the PNC and afterwards…
Crowd got into game. The PNC folks are “silently” moving folks down from the upper level to the endzones to get more folks near the court. Security does that with no PA announcement.
I posted earlier this morning “keys”. Don’t get a big lead. Don’t get buried. Be in a position to win. We got a big (15 point) lead. Then we got “cocky” or whatever. Pitt team got fired up….really FIRED UP. Then, the hit the momentum pendulum with a 200 MPH Chinese Train. It swung so far the Global Warming scientists NOW iceberg bound on their rescue ship felt the impact.
The second half was double coyote UGLY with a capital U. There were so many different line-ups, I thought that Gott was playing Spin the Bottle at a Swinger’s party and using that methodology for the line-up.
It looked as bad in person as it probably did on TV. Fouls were interesting. There were only 34 fouls called. That is about 15 -20% lower than the average this year. I did not keep up with the stats, but the second half was weird. The Zeb’s whistled 3 or 4 quick ones on Pitt….then reciprocated and shared the love and balanced it out. THEN, they went silent, figuratively, for the rest of the game. I do NOT think that the outcome was influenced by them.
On the Post Game Radio Show, Coach G came out in one of the Cutesy little CAT RED “Bobcats”….you know the ones that they flash up for the Scholar of the Game. He had the entire starting lineup plus a couple in the bucket and proceeded to drive outside and deposit the lot in front of the TV Sat Truck…
He showed NO MERCY. He said that we were as flat Mia Farrow’s chest and that we had all the intensity of a sleeping Rev. Billy Barber. He then proceeded to REALLY tell Gary and Tony what he thought. It was NOT a nice interview.
He never used the word “Chemistry” but said we did not play together and we did not play as a team and we had the intensity of dried up feces in the desert….and smelled worse.
Granted that may be true….but I really wanted Gary or Tony to ask. “Having said that Coach, what do you and your staff intend to do to correct the problem?”
He talked about the quick turnaround and how Tomorrow’s practice would be brutal and how they would analyze the individual players’ efforts, or lack thereof. If he can correct that by Tuesday, then he is a national COY candidate.
From a spectator’s perspective, Vandy did not get into the game until well into the first half…then BeeJay came in and had a lot of energy and that really helped.
But in the second half….none of our big men did anything…save Freeman. We had NO PG on the floor for several minutes (Cat and WBS were being “loved” on the bench). We did not have Vandy and the Hulk in….and both had nary a major foul issue. We seemed to be throwing out players numbers, like a lottery ball device, and then putting them in the lineup to see if THAT would work.
I gave up on looking at the color of his shirt….speaking of COLORS…..what is with the INTENSE, FLOURESCENT combo of Duke and UNC BLUE for the GatorAde dispensers. It was on BOTH benches. Talk about UGLY…
Gonna console myself tomorrow and go to the ladies game. Trivia Fact. A few weeks ago, Amedeo’s STILL had the Kelly Harper Booth. Last week, I saw a Wes Moore booth….did not wander around to see if she still had one. Also noticed that Tom Suiter’s booth has prominent pictures of him interviewing a very YOUNG Coach K and S…….
