Kay Yow wins ESPY Award named for Jim Valvano

It’s nice to see others have been inspired by NC State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow over the years! Per WRAL:

North Carolina State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow won the inaugural Jimmy V ESPY for Perseverance on Wednesday.

She was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer while coaching the Wolfpack during this year’s NCAA tournament.

Yow certainly personified perseverance last season, as she has for so long in her personal struggle against breast cancer — a struggle that was ongoing even when it seemed she had defeated the diseases (because she had projected so strongly outwardly). It is noteworthy — and I don’t quite know what to say about it — that she is following her former fellow NC State coach in being honored at the ESPYs for inspirational courage fighting cancer.

But I will say thank you and congratulations, Coach Yow!

    She deserves the ESPY for everything she has done including persevering this year. It’s ironic that two great basketball coaches from the same school would both be a fight for life with cancer. Hang in there Coach Yow!

    It simultaneously breaks my heart and lifts me up to see her with her buzz cut.
    We can be very proud in the way she represents us. And we can all learn from her strength and courage.

    Kay Yow exemplifies what Jimmy V spoke about when he urged us all to never give up. What a great example of courage and persistence she has demonstarted throughout her life. We are not only lucky to have her in the Wolfpack family, but also fortunate to have folks like this in the world today.

    Sweetness! Like SFN says, very strange the simularities between two of our most outstanding coaches, but then again unfortunately it’s really only with the cancer. Everything else that they you can compare about the two and their coaching is not strange, but wonderful.

    was she part of the ceremony that will air Sunday night? even if she wasnt there her self, and I am sure she wasnt… with all the camps they have going on here right now… I really hope they do a nice video piece.

    she deserves every bit of that award. I think its awesome that she did get it seeing the link between here and Jim V. Even without that link, the woman deserves that award more then anyone I can think of.

    I will watch. I’m sure I’ll cry just like I did when V made his speech at the ESPY’s. Kay Yow is a wonderful human being in addition to being an outstanding coach. Let’s all keep her in our prayers.

    Coach Kay Yow is a tremendous inspiration to all of us. After a long trip to play an improving opponent and facing the long trip back home that night, Coach Kay Yow took time to sign autographs in the parking lot. Asking only for an autograph, I received her Christian testimony of faith: Philippians 4:13. Thank you Coach Yow.

    All sports teams everywhere are extremely fortunate to have watched Coach Yow day-by-day, exhibit an unbelievable courage to continue this battle. We are all better athletes, coaches, and human beings for knowing Coach Kay Yow. I am ready today to watch the Women’s Wolfpack Basketball Team continue the absolutely amazing season from this past yeat 2007!! Go Pack!!
