ACC Champions!

#WolfpackNation was glued to ESPN3 and Twitter on Sunday night! In the end, it was all worth it as NC State captured its first ACC Wrestling Championship since 2007 by finishing ahead of Virginia Tech (90 to 81.5)

This is the 15th ACC Championship for the formerly dominant Wolfpack Wrestling program.

Tommy Gantt (157 pounds), Nick Gwiazdowski (285), Max Rohskopf (165) and Kevin Jack (141) all won their eight classes; and State secured 8 automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. The Wolfpack’s four individual titles are the most for the Wolfpack since 2007. Pete Rendaand Sean Fausz both advanced to the finals and were runner-ups. Not a single Wolfpack wrestler finished worse than fourth place.

I had a chance to watch a bit yesterday afternoon. Caught part of the consolation finals. Other than the irritation of have to switch the ESPN3 stream back and forth between Mat 1 and Mat 2, I still found my heart in my throat at the end of the close matches where the wolfpack was wrestling.

    Congrats to the team

Tuned in near the end of the consolation finals and had the same fun switching between the two ESPN3 streams. Watched all of the finals. Great job men.
Gwiz sure put a scare into me in the last period letting the VT wrestler shoot so deep – twice! The tourney was already won but I did not want to seem him lose. As it was, he quickly manhandled the guy and put up another 2 points at then end. Maybe he was never in as much jeopardy as I though he was.

So, we have 8 guys going to the nationals, 4 as ACC Champions. The announcers were talking about our chances for the whole thing. NCSU is still young and should be quite competitive going forward. One announcer expressed that you need to win 3 or 4 individual championships for your team to win the National Championship. That sounds like a crazy lot for one team but I guess if the Iowa’s and Penn States are recruiting the very best every year, maybe they do that.
The pack has one very likely champ in Gwiazdowski as he is the reigning champion x2.

Jack was an all American last year (I think that means top 5 finish) so he has a shot. Gantt also could make some noise. What we need is all 8 to win early and accumulate some team points for us. The fact that we had such a great dual meet records indicates our guys can beat strong opponents and pull some upsets. So you never know.

But most of our wrestlers are Freshmen and Sophs so this team is going be getting better.

Men’s Swimming and Diving won their 23rd ACC title last weekend as well. Not a bad couple of weeks for the Pack! Now if we could just get it together in football or basketball…..
