Tar heels down thin Wolfpack, 67-55

Forgive me if you wanted or expected more from us. Forgive me if you actually want to analyze and dissect Saturday’s game between NC State and UNC. But, I just don’t have it in me. I’ve got so little excitement and engagement about this season and about this team that I don’t understand why we would all waste our time and efforts. At 10-8 overall and 0-5 in the ACC, this team is going nowhere fast; and this season has become one of those seasons where I’m doing what I can to invest in other aspects of my life so that when/if we are ever good again then I won’t feel guilty about caring and paying attention. It happens every now and then…and, this is the year. Missing the tournament 20% of the time and making the NCAA four out of every five years is a pretty appropriate expectation for this program.

Of course the refs sucked on a trip to the Dean Dome. That is a given. After State got a well officiated game in Chapel Hill last season (oh what a surprise…we WON), then you can rest assured that we will come nowhere close to another win for at least the next decade. Don’t take our word for it —

The headlines and storylines on this game is that Carolina just used its depth to wear down State. Yep. That’s about right. But, as deep as UNC’s roster may be – the story there is that NC State is TOO THIN; it isn’t that UNC is SO DEEP (although they are very deep). State is 10-8 and 0-5 in part due to the fact that Coach Gottfried and staff could only find a way to fill the roster with 9 scholarship players that includes one kid that is clearly not Division One ready – Shaun Kirk. This leaves eight players, and one is injured, in our coach’s fifth season where his recruiting has had the benefit of momentum created by four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and two Sweet 16s. It is THIS lack of strategy and lack of tactical execution of running a program that has State sitting in the cellar and has most of us pulling our hair out.

In case you didn’t know, NCAA rules allow you to have thirteen student athletes on scholarship in basketball. So, the next time the Wolfpack Club comes calling for your dollars I think you should ask why they need more money if our coaches can’t/won’t spend the scholarship money that we provide them today?

I often wonder if I am watching the same game as you guys, I know that you love the Pack as much as I love my Heels. Your team is struggling because a couple of guys left early for the NBA based upon bad information. They were supposed to be on the roster and recruits think about how much playing time they are going to get based upon the roster; so the guys that left early hurt your team this year and next. They also hurt themselves but that is another topic…

As for fouls, 16 were called against State and 15 were called against the Heels.

It is simply math, 16 fouls distributed over 7 or 8 guys will have a bigger impact than 15 fouls distributed over 10 guys.

This years team is the team you have, you need to focus on what you do well and how you can improve. Recruits and their parents will visit sites like this and I do not think you guys are helping your cause.

WTF. If you intend to travel out of country, learn a little something about it before pontificating to the locals. ONE left early.

…And remind yourself of this. You should be more concerned about what recruits ans parents hear and read comin’ out of your neck of the woods, ’cause when the sh@t comes down in March, they ain’t gonna be too happy with the lies they’ve been told.

Not helping the cause…indeed. Zip it before your visa gets yanked.

SFN has been troubled more from spam than heel trolls since starting the forums here. heeled82 didn’t strike me as a troll and really didn’t say anything that hasn’t been posted here dozens of times before.

I swear if Carolina does not get burned at the stake and the ashes scattered to the wind I may never recover.

    That’s not the point, Va.

CowDog, I agree with everything you stated. But I think we all know in our heart, nothing (and I mean nothing) will happen in March. If I am not mistaken, only the women’s program was thrown under the bus – men’s program will keep rolling (sad, but true).

the NCAA has a vested ($) interest in keeping Kansas,

Grayson Allen and Ryan Switzer should both be put in a big canvas sack together, and beaten with heavy sticks.

    That is all.

    And apologies for the digression…

No. They don’t. They have a vested interest in their own survival.

They have lived quite well without the inclusion of all mentioned through multiple periods of time.

Money on any particular school is the worst arguement presented.

Perhaps, but I don’t need to listen to the holier than thou admonishments from a rival, especially when there’s enough going on over with his fanbase to keep him busy.

Ahhh, the dreaded show of support by other fan bases. I told all my UNC friends and family that Doherty was really building something as well.

Paki: I wouldn’t hold my breath for UNC basketball to get what they deserve. I think UNC is stalling to try and get to Roy’s retirement (this year?) or hoping that the Power 5 have almost broken completely away. I think the NCAA is really trying to look the other way, but doing so completely will bring the lawsuits that might bring the whole “student athlete” thing crashing down. Look for both sides to abruptly “settle” to some minor BS like games vacated, a one year tournament ban, and maybe 2-3 scholarships reduced over 2-3 years. It won’t amount to much other than giving Hubert Davis a bunch of built in excuses.

It’s funny when you think about those sanctions, it is about like the hand that Gott and staff voluntarily dealt themselves this year, and seemingly will next year as well. It is baffling really.

Me thinks that a few more blue trolls around here might serve a useful purpose…
That is… to be a unifying device amongst an imploding house of loyal wolfpackers.

Yeah that’s never a good sign for a coach. When other schools like a coach its because they know they can beat him.

Wasn’t impressed by UNC. They barely beat us, and if we had another capable scorer we would have won that game. As challenged as we are talent-wise, we could have beaten all of those prize UNC recruits if Barber had someone to pass the ball to.

Don’t you have to answer some kind of a math question now to prove you are a real person in order to register? Something like 1+2=_? I was certain that would keep out any Carolina fans.

I understand. It’s the exact same thing they said about Sendek…which really boils down to “he’s good enough for you”.

Exactly. That’s what I don’t understand about Gott’s recruiting. Give out the 13 scholarships. Yes, some will transfer but the cream will rise to the top. At least we will have enough players to practice.

Having just one, or even two guards on an ACC basketball team is inexcusable, regardless of the circumstances.

Off topic…but I’ve just been informed that Channel 5 (and Channel 50 too, fwiw…same ownership) is demanding more scrilla from DirecTV in order to allow them to carry their signals. Currently, both channels are off the air. To be clear, this was WRAL/WRAZ/Capitol Broadcasting’s move to cut the signal (yay leverage), not DirecTV’s.

But in any case, if it’s not resolved by 8pm, those of us with DirecTV will need to find alternate viewing options for the Pitt game.
