Game Thread – Wolfpack Football in Blacksburg

Not gonna lie.  I’m packing for the beach and forgot about putting this entry up until about an hour ago while I was in line at the ABC Store.  I’m at least 50% confident that the timing of my realization was coincidental, and that I have no Pavlovian link to NC State athletics and alcohol.

I’m even more certain that the length and quality of this entry will be telling.  I haven’t started drinking yet, but I’m getting itchy.

And frankly, after last week’s loss my mojo streak is broken so someone else oughta be putting this up this week.  But I also forgot to point that out to anyone until just now sooooo….

Yeah, they sucked even more than usual by the time this album came out, but some girl I dated loved this song and it still reverberates in my brain anytime the subject of Friday nights comes up.  Hopefully it will now reverberate in yours as well.

You’re welcome.

The Pack (4-1) travels to Blacksburg, VA to take on the Hokies of Virginia Tech (2-3) this week in a rare regular season Friday game. The Pack is coming off its first loss of the year, a home setback vs Louisville; while the Hokies are currently on a 2 game skid (@ECU, vsPitt).

In spite of having their seven game win streak snapped by the Cardinals last week, State does still have a road winning streak to protect…hopefully. A win in Blacksburg would make it six straight road wins for the Pack dating back to last year’s win at Syracuse.

But Friday nights have not been kind to the Pack.

With an all-time losing record (5-6-1) on Fridays since the ACC came together, the Pack last played on Friday night vs Tennessee in ATL in ’12, a 35-21 loss. The last conference game on a Friday for the Pack was a 30-28 home loss to Carolina on the Friday after Thanksgiving in ’95.

And though I am very concerned about this game, none of that historical crap matters.

The Pack needs this one. So does VT.

Hopefully our coaches and players know which bit to look down, because it’s basically going to come down to execution

I don’t think Doeren is going anywhere soon. I’m not an X-and-O guy, but judging from the material we’ve got on the field, I don’t know who else would do much better right now, other than a handful of coaches like Nick Saben, Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops.

I’ll repeat it- until NC State gets a REAL quarterback, and not an upperclassman red shirt, our program isn’t likely to start showing significant improvement. If b-ball doesn’t have a good point guard, it’s the same thing for football without a good QB.

I am not knocking Brissett. He is trying to play a position that he’s not cut out to play at a high level. If he had decent speed, he might pull it off, but let’s face it- even with a good group of receivers, it’s doubtful that he could pass us to a lot of wins.

Mike London has taken UVA football into the toilet for over half a decade now, but for some reason administrators there are determined that they can make him into a successful football coach. With the long tenures of Herb Sendek, Sidney Lowe and Tom O’Brien at NCSU, who overstayed their welcome for many seasons, I don’t expect our administrators to act much differently. Education administrators seem loathe to fire mediocre coaches.

If we don’t start winning some recruiting wars, I just don’t see much change for us, given that the ACC has put us in an almost impossible position in the Atlantic Division.

Seems to me that after State ran up a 145-29 yards gained advantage in just the first quarter, Virginia Tech DC Bud Foster figured out Matt Canada’s offense, and then held it to 125yds for the remaining three quarters. Foster is an excellent DC. He is the only four time finalist in the history of the Broyles Award, winning it in 2006.

Tau – I will admit that I was wrong.

Certainly don’t think Jacoby is anywhere near our main problem, but we needed him t be excellent, and he hasn’t been.

OL and secondary have been fatal flaws, along with our schedule meaning we hadn’t been hit in the mouth until October. The first two are just residuals from the dumpster fire, and we need to give Doeren ample time.

The latter simply better never happen again. A weak schedule is NOT an opportunity to have a special year (unless your team has no flaws), it’s a recipe for disaster because your team hits conference play less prepared/battle tested than your competition.

Jacoby has not been what we need him to be, but the OL has been far worse.

I agree JB is not the biggest problem. He is doing his best, his best just isn’t good enough in combination with the talent around him on offense and the playcalling.

Serious question. If this season turns into a death spiral, will Doeren start playing McClendon to get him reps for the future?

Which underlines the lack of a Plan B.

After watching the game in person, I find it very odd that Brissett was taking sacks in the pocket until late in the game when he showed signs of the escapability he had last year. I am convinced that he had been coached to complete his checkdowns, which he is very slow at. Once he mobilized himself, he opened space in the VT defensive backfield that had not been there all game.

And THAT should have been Plan B going into the second half. That it wasn’t is damning.

Oh yeah. Doeren was none to happy(publicly) with the Zebes. More than 2 or 3 game changers that I think where called, and not called.

How come no one has brought that up? Or is that strictly reserved for basketball?

If you check the game thread, you will see that I pointed a couple of those out.

He had pockets galore. He also had 2 bats, which is unusual.

We’ll see. It ain’t over til it’s over.

Note: Gallaspy does not grip D1 football yet. He made two huge boo boos in key downs last night.
He will learn what gap he is supposed to get to soon.

Yes, no plan B. Which is one reason the week off comes at a good time. Time to make some changes/wrinkles, because both the Ville and Va. Tech seemed to crack the code of our offense fairly easily, holding us to a combined 26 points over eight quarters. Personally, I was hoping that we were holding some cards, offensively speaking, through the first 4 games, saving them for conference play, but I haven’t seen much over the last two games to give that thought merit. I don’t know. Maybe I’m missing something, but I’m not seeing much difference in the offense over the last two games versus the first four.

It’s really seeing former walk-on/backup NC State quarterback and alum Dr. Jerry Punch reporting from the sidelines at Clemson today.

Agree about Gallaspy, CD. It was obvious in his previous goal line struggles. Even from the stands last night, it was obvious the issue continues. One particular example stands out. It’s as if he was trying to do his best Tony Richardson impression.

As I stated when it happened, it appears most do not appreciate the effects of Thornton’s loss.

I certainly do. And I have to give Dave Doeren props for cutting him, even though it really hurt the team.

I personally am sick and tired of schools that give their athletes free passes for anything they do just so they can win.

Just a thought….I don’t know what Jacoby’s NFL draft status is at this point. It certainly hasn’t improved over the last two weeks. I suppose that everyone has their own “eye test”, not that that means much. Is there anyone out there that really believed that Tyrod Taylor would not only be starting for an NFL team this year, but that he would be 13th in the league in passing yards (988), tied for fifth in the NFL with 8 TD passes, and only four plucks, and tenth in the league with a QBR of 104.4, this year? Who saw that coming? So Jacoby? Who knows. But what I will bet you is that, major injuries aside, 1 or 2 years from now, Jaylen Samuels will go much higher in the NFL draft than Jacoby. I believe he has what it takes, and will be very good. He passes my eye test, but then, that doesn’t mean much..so I’m told…

FOOTBALL PLAYERS are not easy to come by, Wolfanatic. Samuels, indeed will get his shot….Especially since he now understands the “Don’t bat that MF’er OB,” rule.

In games 1-2, while Thornton was suspended, Galaspy was the third string back. What happened to the kid who was behind Dayes on depth chart, but was hurt last year?

It seems to me that Jaylen could be a physical RB just like OT was. Also wondering why we don’t just burn the other guy’s redshirt if Gallaspy ain’t ready.

Bottom line…every team has injuries/suspensions at some point. Losing one RB (when it’s your deepest position on the field, by far) can’t be an excuse to play THIS SHITTY. It’s not to say it’s not a signficant loss, but to say we’d be 6-0 is a bridge too far, and a cop-out of the highest magnitude.

Like I said, the only way it could really be THAT much of a drop is if the team was so crushed by him not being here that they basically quit on the staff, which seems insane to me.

I think that Jaylen has the potential to be like a Ladainian T. or Darren Sproles, or Reggie Bush..give him the ball in open space and he smells end zone. As CD said..he is a football player…

They won’t burn the other fr redshirt. But Galaspy as the #2 back is two spots up on the depth chart now. That’s a lot to ask of a true fr. He played lb in the shrine bowl and looked gifted there. Not knocking his ability on offense but I’m a little surprised he didn’t get more of a look there.

I wonder how much play calling has been influenced by shad’s dismissal. There was a great deal of talk about playing he and Dayes on the field at the same time. He was the power run game.

OK, 24 hours….or Jimmy V’s official mourning period….game was “Statistically over at 15:00 to go.

Coach D got a Tweet from Hillary Clinton…

    Coach Doeren,
Never met you. You are an inspiration…..I thought that I had had a BAD WEEK….but my 10 point loss in the polls pales in comparison to your drop of fan support…..

BTW, my new campaign mantra is ……feel free to re-tweet this…..

Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle without a clue….

Only the lowly 9% called it 7 – 5. If I read all the comments, I would have thought that we already had 9 losses….and were trying to salvage a 2 -10 season.

I did NOT like our offense performance…..It was lackluster from a running and passing perspective. We DID loose Jones….and that hurt. VT’s OC was QUICK to take advantage of that…..Think Big Bad Wolf catching Goldilocks skinny dipping.

If you are tired of reading….scroll to the end….there is a treat…but would appreciate if you just SKIMMED a little….

As to Coach D’s comments on the officiating….that is probably true…but you have to play with who Swoff sends. The batting call was more predictable that a Louisville BB Hooker…..you will SCORE tonight….I done been PAID…

Every Ref in the country was told to review that rule. THEN the DUMB Swing….and a HIT and said….TWEET….they’re gonna call it.

The rest were ugly….from the FIRST Facemask. This is truly out of character for a DD team. And, I suspect he will take the appropriate action.

As to firing, then drawing and quartering and finally burning our OC at the stake, at least we will NOT behead him….we DO have some morals….and the EPA has shut down our Boiling Tar Kettles and PETA has shown video of the BM’s with Red Undies doing unspeakable things to Colonel Sander’s finest future entrees…

What needs to happen…..we need to take OFF Monday. We got a BYE. The coaching staff will probably bee out on the “HUNT”. We need to regroup.

I DO recall how syrupy the commentators were when we were marching down the field…..JB was GONNA be seen on Sunday afternoons….and a LOT quicker than folks predicted.

I have NOT had a drink in over 24 hours…..and probably SHOULD have….I only read the comments backwards and stopped when JB did not have to “worry” about his streak of NO INTERCEPTIONS…..

Things will be better, step from the keyboard (or Ledge if so inclined) and regroup and refocus..

At least none of our esteemed athletes said the following…

“Yes (the hookers/strippers/escorts), they did take off their clothes….but never got naked….they still had on their shoes….”

Cozell McQueen was heard to laugh as far away as Orangeburg, SC…..That lifts the monkey off his back for the “I wanted to go to NCSU to get out of the South” comment….

    My apologies to Don Henley….

Last thing I remember was the Gobbling blaring PA speakers
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
“Relax,” said the VT ticket swiper, “We are programmed to receive

Great pic roo – and yes cowdog – we had some critical calls at critical times go against us.

Still, the last 2 games were a test…and we didn’t get a B, C or even a D….we got an F. And that reflects badly on both coaches and players and whoever created this train wreck of a schedule.

We gave up more yards and points to va tech in 1 quarter than they had in their entire last game. We had 2 – count them – 2 – yards in the 2nd quarter. It was like @ Clemson all over again.

Brisset holds on to the ball too long. Our D gets no pass rush – and we haven’t even bothered to try and find a back who will do the tough sledding in lieu of Shadrach. Our safeties – a day late and a dollar short. At this point, we are not a good football team, as a matter of fact, at present we are a bad one. Our conference record since dd has arrived is 3-15…the worst stretch ever in NC state football history.

Still, we have the bye week coming up and hopefully that yields something positive. I like DD and I want him to be successful. If we make good improvements in these next 6 games we can still have a solid season.
