N.C. State vs. West Virginia; Saturday Open

Hi all – hope everyone’s having a good Saturday and that your weekend is off to a good start. In addition to Pack-WVa tonight, throughout the day there’s tons of college basketball, the first bowl game of the season, plus a couple of NFL games on today as we draw in on the NFL Playoffs (cue Jim Mora soundbite!). Please use this thread as an ‘open’ discussion for sports happenings – then we’ll transition into the game thread.

N.C. State (9-2) vs. West Virginia (9-1), Gotham Classic, ~9:30pm @ Madison Square Garden; Tv: Espn2

West Virginia team page

N.C. State heads into New York tonight for their first neutral court game of the season (let’s hope it’s the first of many neutral site games). The Wolfpack enters the Gotham Classic contest against West Virginia after a solid, bounce-back win over Tennessee on Wednesday evening. A great opportunity lays in front of the Pack tonight, as a neutral court victory over a solid Power conference opponent would carry a lot of weight on Selection Sunday if the Pack is in contention for a berth.

So, what exactly is the Gotham Classic? In addition to the linked page above, the ‘Richmond Times-Dispatch‘ offers the following:

“The Gotham Classic is comprised of seven teams in a competition held at various sites. N.C. State and West Virginia play in the Gotham Classic only in this Showcase Round. Richmond, Pepperdine, Howard, South Alabama and IUPUI face one another in a round-robin format.”

Richmond and Pepperdine qualified for tonight’s ‘Showcase Round’ through the round-robin, and will play at 7pm. The Wolfpack and Mountaineers will take the court approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Spiders-Waves game.

As for West Virginia, the Mountaineers are off to a pretty solid start at 9-1. Their RPI currently sits at 34 and they have wins over Boston College and UConn by virtue of winning the ‘Puerto Rico Tip Off’. West Virginia’s only blemish is a home loss to athletic but inconsistent LSU. The Mountaineers are ranked, primarily due to the victory over UConn before the Huskies started showing their flaws. That’s not meant to slight WVa’s accomplishments – it just goes to show how unreliable media rankings can be early in the season. West Virginia trailed for much of the game against opponents BC, Monmouth, and Marshall … so it will be interesting to see what we get out of the Mountaineers tonight.

As for style of play, the Mountaineers rely on pressure defense and rebounding – Bob Huggins staples. They’re not overly efficient on offense (of course, Tenn wasn’t a good shooting team yet nailed seemingly 500 threes against the Pack), instead relying on offensive putbacks and turnovers to create scoring opportunities. If the Pack backcourt can handle the WVa pressure and physicality, and if the team grab the majority of their defensive rebound opportunities then there may be chances to run and get out in space – a style of play that definitely favors the Wolfpack. I like the match-up and it will be very interesting to see this game play out. Regardless of the outcome, this will hopefully be another contest that helps the Pack put together the pieces of the puzzle (it’s all about working towards March, baby).

Ohio State has looked pretty tame against the Holes today. Louisville was in an all-out war at Western Kentucky earlier, which saw Montrezz Harrell get thrown out for throwing a punch. Very intense game throughout, and the Cardinals held on to win by 9.

Syracuse has been kinda pedestrian so far this season, but was up double digits at Villanova earlier – Wildcats are rallying in the 2nd half though.

Interesting weekend for the ‘directional’ Kentuckys – WKU had a literal battle with Louisville earlier, while 6-4 Eastern Kentucky throttled ranked Miami last night in Coral Gables by 28 points, 72-44.

    College basketball is wild.

Just saw on ESPN.com that Mick Cronin (Cincy’s coach) is out indefinitely with an aneurysm. No medical expert, but just the sound of that doesn’t seem very good. Hope it’s something he can recover from.
They play the Pack Dec 30.

And just when I was about to turn off the Cuse-Nova game thinking the Orange had it wrapped up…

^Saw that earlier, PIR – that’s a terrible story. All the best for him.

Holes hang on against meh-looking Ohio St., and Syracuse loses a 5 point lead to ‘Nova in the last 10 seconds and they’ll head to OT.

Game is on Fox for anyone interested (Gus Johnson hysterics for play-by-play!)

‘Nova downs ‘Cuse in OT … tough loss for the Orange. Would have been a big, possible season defining win for them.

Solid day for ACC to this point. Syracuse takes highly ranked Villanova to OT while L’ville, GT, UNC, FSU & VPI have already won.

Fastback, love The Simpson’s reference about the weekend!

Praying for Cronin. My uncle died of a brain aneurysm 25 years ago. The science has come a long way since then and they are better at treating the brain swelling that comes with the surgery (if that’s how they treat it here).

The end of the ‘Cuse ‘Nova game was awesome. I have to stop cheering against our conference members…

Holy frijole, just got home and turned on the UK/UCLA game. Was expecting a woodshedding, but not to this degree.

Pitt survives a scare & beats Oakland. Notre Dame on top of Purdue by 7 at the half. #ACC

Kentucky is freaky scary good. They have a shot at going undefeated, as weak as the SEC is.

This Cronin story is terrible. I know he is a maniac on the sideline but I like him. Very honest, works his tale off. Hoping for the best for him. Puts it all in perspective.

Some Big Ten teams taking it on the chin early this season.

Texas Southern had 1 win entering today’s contest in East Lansing … they won at Michigan State in OT. Amazing. Michigan continues it’s slide, losing at home to SMU. Purdue had a disastrous 2nd half and lost by 31 against Notre Dame. Some wild results in college bball this season.

Man, I sure hope we don’t lay an egg tonight…and our bigs need to play better on the offensive end….I guess these guys don’t play zone…I suppose that’s a good thing.

that might serve to be ‘motivating’…

Cops getting murdered in NYC. Must be disturbing for a couple out of town schools. Focus & teamwork. Can’t wait to get our boys outta there and back home safely. Teamwork!

What? A mid December loss to an inferior opponent? No excuses, off with their heads! A not so inconspicuous contingent on this site would be calling for Izzo to be fired.

while we’re waiting for the 9:35 tipoff..

speaking of b10 sh&t…help me figure this out…

Harbaugh is headed to Michigan (once they get the money right… _
after what’s probably his worst season in the NFL…

… but the Niners gave Russell and the Seahawks more than they wanted last week
and are killing the Chargers tonight…

more chargers have laid on the field than first downs in the first half…

    What’s up the Niners…
Are they trying to show Coach he should stay
    OR
are they happy he’s leaving ??

Nothing is up with the Niners. It’s just that the Chargers have a swiss cheese defense. Gore is already over 100.
