NC State Helmets Go Old School for BC

NC State’s twitter account just put out this photo of the helmet that the Football team will where in this crucial matchup vs Boston College.

I think it is fantastic. Love the use of Tuffy on the helmet after the use of him on the basketball court. Soon it will be on midfield. Despite what you think about the helmet it is good for the program that we are doing these things to keep it fresh. People notice. Recruits notice.

I’m not even going to get into the branding of the red block “S” that 95% of the country thinks is for Stanford.

My MIL bought me some gloves with a Block S one year at Christmas. She evidently didn’t notice the Christmas Tree along with the “S”.

Can we stop with the press releases for uniform changes?

We worry with the marketing when the product is not so good.

Disagree. If uniforms didn’t matter to recruits, nobody would be spending money on it. And some schools spend a LOT more than we do. Although I’m too old to understand, it’s well established that uniforms matter to today’s recruits, so I let it go.

It’s also not that hard for me to see that the fastest route to improving the product is to get better recruits. If changing uniforms can help with that, then so be it.

In the end, we all control which stories we click.

The Strutting Wolf needs to be the primary mascot for NC State. Eventually the administration will wake up and get it.

The Block S is nice and all, but only really works in NC. Get outside of the state (and all it takes is a state away) and people think it is Stanford.

Those helmets look awesome by the way. That’s by far the best looking NC State helmet in 20+ years. If they auction these or made replicas, I’d buy one.

We’re chasing recruits with uniform changes? Uff da.. somehow the game just lost some appeal for me. If you say its necessary then so be it, but make no mistake that is a reality analogous to staring at a turd. Maybe we should go with solid well executed football over uniform changes. just a thought

Did you mean logo and athletic administration, ryebread? I can align with the Strutting Wolf being our primary athletic logo, but I suspect that the university administration is looking at the bigger picture. I love the Strutting Wolf but if that was the university logo, I’m afraid we would get laughed out of the room.

BTW I think sheep are the perfect mascot for the boys over on Brokeback Hill, if you know what I mean.

Maybe we should go with solid well executed football over uniform changes.

But if we did that, we’d miss out on all the ridiculous comments we get.

Maybe they can walk AND chew gum.

And that horseless carriage thing, it’s just a fad.

Whether one agrees or disagrees that it may have an effect on recruiting, I fail to see the analogy as described.

Let me help you out here. I mean to “make no mistake” but as near as I can tell, the turd has something to do with who’s making the analogy.

I’m guess you mean the helmet golf cart?

That and the big drum would be awesome throwbacks. I heard years ago that the big drum is in storage somewhere but needs new skins and that there is no money for it. Matter of fact, I think it was one of you guys here that said that.

I’m afraid that a beating drum would only embellish the one chant I can’t stand. The noles tomahawk. Rocky Top is a close second. Have we ever tried a unified fan wolf howl?

    three things:
    1. agreed. Block S is Stanford. not us.
    2. 50/50. uniform changes are for recruits.
…if that’s the case, REALLY change unis,
because we REALLY need better talent.
    3. chant? did we stop GTH Carolina?

God only knows and he ain’t saying. I thought he meant the helmet the golf cart is resembles. 😉 I’ve seen that sentiment before.

    From my perspective?…
It looks like a car window decal. I’m good with it

The problem with kids these days is they have no fashion sense.

They have no clue how to accessorize.

Just say no to this helmet logo. Block S or no logo!

Most anything with Tuffy is LRM-approved. I like the helmet.

I also love our block S as the primary. And I’ve never understood why so many State folks care at all what those outside the family think, or if those outside NC think it’s Stanford. No one who matters thinks it’s Stanford.

That’s always been the problem with our marketing. We’ve always been more concerned selling our brand in Idaho, when we should just focus on promoting ourselves to ourselves.

That’s why the Our State campaign was so brilliant (at first).

I guess what I’m getting at is this: all flat-brim hats should be banned.

For the most part I’m old school about unis but I like this helmet. To really “promote” the brand in football will take some consistent winning which can be done under coach D.

I’m with LRM. Additionally, if we won enough, we would not be confused with Stanford.

Tuffy is a great logo (70’s or modern one). I prefer the block ‘S’ and feel tuffy should be used as a secondary logo (except bball….for some reason I like tuffy as the primary for bball).

I recently saw a picture of my great uncle next to his car with a block ‘S’ (with the ‘NC’ inside) painted on his car door. That picture was from the mid ’20s. The Block ‘S’ has too much history with NCSU for me to worry about what other schools use a block S.

The Block S to me is about as vanilla and unoriginal of a logo as there is. You can’t even see the “NC” from a distance, which is why so many confuse it for Stanford. If it is being mistaken for someone else nationally, what’s the point in using it? I just think it is very poor marketing, which State as a whole doesn’t ever seem to get.

I do not find tuffy very inspiring, tuf, or a good helmet logo. Put the ol fella on t shirts for kids.

That’s why the Our State campaign was so brilliant (at first).

LRM, You are the first person I’ve seen with the courage to say this. It was brilliant until the heavy handed dolts shifted the context from a declaration/creation to a false statement of fact. I flinched every time I saw an ad or video of one of our players “staking a claim” and planting a flag. It became a brag, not a creation. Not only did it lose it’s brilliance, it became and albatross around our neck.

Context is decisive. In the context of proudly proclaiming this is our state like you might claim Raleigh is your home town, We had a winner. When the idiots shifted the context to we own the state and planted flags to stake our claim, it became an embarrassment. Think not? Did you ever read or hear it was an embarrassment in the first year?

In the context it was created in it was a short step to NC State being thought of as Our Univesity. I’m pretty sure TOB was the first to use this and I believe it was his intention to use as a serious counter to Brokeback Hills claim “THE University of North Carolina.” This statement couple with our kicking their ass football 5 years in a row was a dynamite combination — until the sh*theads in Annabelle’s domain screwed it up.

We were headed in the direction of overdoing it with Make a STATEment. Overdoing a good thing. Force feeding it to all who were within earshot. Thank goodness the admin is aware of how we killed Our State and have scaled it back and hope it will carry forth for many years as the University STATEment, a vehicle for promoting North Carolina State University.

Now if we could just put a gag on our stadium announcer. Yuk!
