Snow Storm Entry [Updated 2:30pm]

The roads in and around Raleigh are INSANE right now!

And, the snow continues to come down. So, we thought we would do our part to contribute to information sharing and hopefully add a little value with an ‘open thread’ for people to share whatever they would like about the storm and what they are seeing and experiencing.

I guess it isn’t just Raleigh that is currently experiencing gridlock:

At 1:15pm I was out in the storm near the intersection of Wake Forest Road and Hardimont and everything was complete gridlock. There was no moving. I ended up taking Hardimont around the back of North Hills and was able to get through Six Forks and North Hills with no problem. (One thing is for sure…there is nobody at Target!) As I crossed over the beltline all you can see is bumper to bumper cars in each direction.

My experience was the exact same as “Not a Fan of Blue’s” below. The roads are full of MORONS right now!!

I also experienced the following as I was trying to call my wife to give her an update.

It’s good to see the best coming out in some people:

UNCheat hoping for a “no-show” game tonight perhaps????? Then they can mail in a victory to Swoffy’s office, hang a banner and order rings.

^Good call-the holes do ‘no-show’ better than anyone else in the nation…

I hope they don’t call this game off. I want to see the game shown on TV with lots of empty seats. I fully expect the Dukies to totally demolish the holes.

When folks ask who I pull for in the battle of the turds, I always say, I’m pulling for the roof to cave in. This may be the best chance yet (said with a unc eating grin).

    SFN does PSA! Awesome.

My daughter got stuck about a mile from the house. I went to the rescue in the 4WD pickup. Took 2 1/2 hours. Stay away from New Hope Church Rd. The hill going up to the Green Road intersection was completely stopped.

Local tv and ESPN are both carrying this game. The only way it would be called off at this point would be if Dickie V couldn’t get there.

Re roads: it took me almost an hour and a half to go from Jones Franklin Road at Western Boulevard to Jones Franklin at Tryon Road around 2pm. Half the problem was the stoplight at the Sumter Square entrance.

If you get stuck a mile or two away from someplace…WALK.

    True! Existential, but true.

The sound of pinging is making me uber nervous.

Utter chaos reigns in Cary. I was out for a while this afternoon and had to help push several cars just to clear an opening to get things moving. It got nasty fast. Snow movers don’t do much good when it’s gridlock. I’ve navigated blizzards in the Wasatch, Sierra Nevada, Loveland Pass, Chicago and of course back home on Highway 421 from Boone — it’s fun if you’re equipped for it.

I remember when State-UNC was cancelled in ’91 the night Desert Storm began. They played back-to-back the next two nights.

It’s irresponsible for the ACC to play this game, simply because it is, in fact, so important to so many folks, that people will get killed trying to get there.

I have driven those same places. That road up to Alta has one of the highest occurrences of avalanches. Great skiing though!

All fantastic roads to the above peeps.

For my money, “dropping” into Bishop through Montgomery Pass is the most treacherous in the lower 48.

My understanding is that K had Sarah Palin’s husband lined up with several sleds and dog teams to get them to Chapel Hill…When Roy heard that, they decided to postpone the game!

Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are two of the finest drives on earth. Solitude is my favorite ski hill in the Wasatch.

The coldest I’ve ever been was either on the Italy-France border at La Rosier or the Alta-Snowbird pass a few years ago.

The most nerve-racking, treacherous drive I had was through a whiteout on California 88 from Kirkwood back to Tahoe.
