Wolfpack/Credit Union Game Thread

You may remember Florida Gulf Coast University from last year’s NCAAT run. Well, you at least remember their uptempo, innovative coach…and of course his smoking hot model/actress wife. Yeah, the move to Southern Cal was probably fine and dandy with her. Coach Andy and Coach Andy’s wife won’t be in Raleigh tonight, but they live in our hearts forever, along with the SFN “Credit Union” meme. TV is only ESPN3. Que lastima.

Let’s hope it’s at least a little better than 11/20’s unpleasantness.

Don’t know anything about Lewis and PT. Gott talked last night about “competition” at the PG….I guess that Lewis failed a few tests…

I think we’re all pretty certain who’s going to get the job over the long haul. Barber is faster than Lewis, is a bigger threat to penetrate and score and has the ability to be a better defender.

Lewis, on the other hand, plays with a lot of heart, but the team just…slows…down….when he is running the offense. I think that as Cat gets more experience and more coaching that Lewis is going to the bench and will be the change of pace guy coming off to give Barber some rest.

Bottom line: State looks better and runs better with Barber and Lee on the floor.

I really wish that Patrick Wallace could get a little more rotation. That boy shoots with Wood’s confidence and seems to understand that D is essential.

Agreed. He should get some spot minutes just to see how he does during game play. Granted, he is an unheralded freshman, but the kid could give the starters a blow or give the coach a chance to “make a point” or even insert him as a zone buster If he excels, he earns more PT. Thing is, he got some time in the OT against Central, but he missed his one shot. The rest of the time, no one would pass him the ball and instead would launch up their own clanker time and time again. I think Gott should coach his players up and put the kibosh on that, and give Wallace some minutes in the first half to see how he does.

(not that my opinions are worth even two cents.)

Pure speculation on my part, by I think that if/when Barber becomes the #1 guy that Lewis will respond well. I’ve always envied teams that have that #2 guy who can come in and not only provide the starter a breather, but control the game in his own right. You want to be able to spell your guy, not the other team’s guy/s.

I honestly don’t see it as a question of “if” but instead of a question of “when.” Coach made it clear that the position was up for grabs and I am pretty sure that he’s seeing what we’re seeing: a physically far more talented but less experienced player in Barber who is improving rapidly. It won’t be long before he takes the position and makes it his.

And it won’t be long after that before he is a feared player against any opponent. Remember how Raymond Felton used to burn people with his speed? That’s what I am seeing in Cat Barber.

Vandy’s dunk came in at number 9 on Sports Center this morning.

^ What a travesty. They should have taken into account who it was making that play. Would have been #1 with a bullet.

In other words, If they knew Vandy like we know Vandy.

Why do I have a feeling that the ACC officials office is reviewing last night’s game and finding tendencies in V’s and Cat’s play? Not blatant but enough to draw 2 quick fouls at the beginning of each half.

In diagnosing my ESPN3 issues I watched the replay of the game (using another, slower computer). Things I saw:

    1. JV does look significantly better than in any previous season – looked quicker and more sure of where to be on the court. Part of that is probably the competition but I do see significant improvement

    2. Barber is beginning to show what he can do. Still a bit raw on this level but there is no doubting his superior size and physical abilities over Lewis. I can see them making an excellent 1-2 at the point.

    3. Again maybe related to the competition but the team seems to be coming together more with more play. The team as a whole played much better than against NCCU.

    4. Warren simply is. The offense is there, his frame looks better. Defense has improved but there are more improvements needed

    5. Anya is beginning to get into playing shape and as he does so his game shows the promise we had hoped.

    6. One thing that is much different from the last several years is there are decent subs to step up when needed (like foul trouble).

    7. Still have some ESPN3 issues with the first computer but I have some other tweaks to try on my end.

Watched the game on ESPN3 through my Xbox and had great reception the entire time. Infact, now that I think about it, I love using my xbox to watch all ESPN games, more convient, easier to find highlights or games I want & less bs commercials.

    On the game…

Great to have Big V back. You can tell a big difference when we move Warren to the 3. I believe we just witnessed the “changing of the guards” at the point guard position. I have always been in Tylers corner, but he cannot do what Cat can do in transition or off the dribble. If we had 4 scorers Tyler would thrive, but right now we need a PG who can create and score in traffic, something Tyler has struggled to do this year. I think there will be a place for him on this team, but not in the starting lineup.

I agree with alpha, with Lewis at point the game SLOWS DOWN….

Great win, got a couple cupcake games upcoming before a BIG showdown with Tennessee in Knoxville. Would be a great OOC win for us.

I think all of us here want to see Lewis succeed but it’s clear that cat is just a better athlete. I agree, the offense did slow down when Lewis was in the game. I think our offense will thrive with warren at the 3 and turner coming off the bench relieving warren and lee. Lewis seems to be the best fit as the backup pg. We just have to hope that egos do not get in the way of progress. I have a feeling that Lewis will be fine because he seems to be a great teammate.

  10. Wulfpack 11/27/2013 at 8:48 AM #

Agree on the PG situation. Cat has clearly distanced himself. Lewis will be fine. He is a great kid. This was a very good outing. V-berg was an absolute beast on both ends. I was pleasantly surprised.

  11. Texpack 11/27/2013 at 8:53 AM #

“If we had 4 scorers Tyler would thrive.”

Very good point. Lewis is the pure old school distributing PG and we need points from somebody in addition to Warren. Cat is the best option. He also creates a lot more with his ability to penetrate than Lewis does. I hope Lewis will at least finish out the season, but I wouldn’t bank on it.

“My time is now; there’s no one in front of me,” Vandenberg said. “There’s no more C.J. (Leslie), no more Rich (Howell), no more DeShawn (Painter), no more Tracy Smith, no more Dennis Horner. If this goes out to the (young) people, they’ll be like, ‘Who the hell is Dennis Horner?’ I’ve been here a long time.”

    Thanks Jordan. That was funny.

  13. BJD95 11/27/2013 at 9:28 AM #

Alpha – that’s a great comp in Felton. 100% agreed. Just hope we get two years out of Cat.

I’m ok with Buckets not playing much defense. In the “new emphasis” world, we really need him to never get in foul trouble. There’s no replacing his offense.

I probably should apologize for my post on the game. I sensed there was not any comments from anyone that was there….so I rambled on.. My mom went back to school when I was in the 7th grade and had to turn in typing assignments. When she got behind (she was working full time + OT as $$ were tight), I would do her typing and learned to “touch type” early…

The N&O said we “Won”. WRAL said we Rolled and used the ROUT in the copy. We did rout them….no way about it. We did let up a bit and we had different line-up’s in and I assume it was a bit of experimentation.

Certain (local) coaches’, IMO, seem to want to KILL the weaker opponent and use it as a teaching experience.

I think that Gott’s comment about “shaking up” the line-up and “going BIG” about sums it up. With Vandy out, each person was trying to play a role that was “taller” than they ordinarily play.

Last night, they seemed to be more at ease and also able to score, defend, move, etc.

I do profess to be a fan of Tyler – both on and off the court. He is a gutsy kid and also seems to be the type of athlete that we need in ALL our programs. I may have been overly critical and wrong on why he did not start. Cat brings height and the new line-up certainly looked awesome. I made a donation in Tyler’s grandmother’s memory last year and got a nice note from his dad. I also admired his tweet after the NCCU game.

Gott said that the long break gave them more practice time and that had certainly helped Cat. So he got his shot and did a great job. I probably should quit kidding about him being influenced by Whitt…

Tyler seemed at ease in the second half. Gott said that we might not see both of them on the court or our “4 guard” squad. So, now it seems, to me, to be a little simpler.

Cat will continue to mature….he still, I think, tries to do the things that he could do in high school….but the level of competition will not allow…

Tyler may be the Alex Johnson that we need. He has the “Russell Wilson” attitude and he will be with us for 4 years.

Feel MUCH better about the team…..and just as an NCCU loss does not doom the season, a FGCU win does not guarantee a high NCAA tourney seed.

Hope all the “mojo” from both the Lads and Lassies’ victory carry over into CF on Saturday.

A lot of fans, last night, seemed to be concerned and probably should be about Coach Doeren.

FTR, his NIU Huskies went 12 (yes…TWELVE) and 0 (ZERO) last night. SO, do we abandon OUR coach and hire his replacement? Rod Carey was brought to NIU by Coach Doeren as the OL coach in 2011. He started out as the OL coach in 2012, but was promoted to OC….then later, when DD left, he became the HC…

Gotta admire what he did….but I think that we need to lighten up a bit on Coach D and give him a chance.

No apology needed. I enjoyed your insight and reading the post last night added a lot in my opinion.

Way to to turn things around pack.

I don’t know if this has been stated in the past few days but I read that Lorenzo Brown was picked up by the Philadelphia 76’ers and in one game played 5 min and scored 5 points. Way to go Lorenzo!

  20. MrPlywood 11/27/2013 at 5:29 PM #

Yeah Tuffy, I posted that somewhere, but without a forum those things tend to get lost. I’ve been keeping an eye on the D League guys too, and Howell is on a 2 game tear with back to back double doubles, 21/12 and 21/13. He’s going to start getting lots of attention if he keeps that up.

Nice to see that the sky is not falling anymore. That is until we lose another home game, then the watch is on, never a dull moment around here.

I would like to pose a question: where was Vandenberg the past two years? Does anyone remember the Wake Forest game last year when Berg came in the first half and completely changed the game? He had something like 6 or 8 points, a number of offensive and defensive rebounds and a couple of blocks and altered shots. Then he disappeared the rest of the game (oh yeah, we lost by the way). Why was he never given the chance? Our post depth has been questionable since Gott arrived but he now just decides that this is Berg’s time? Some will use his weight as an excuse but he only ballooned up last year. In Gott’s first year he was about the same size as he is now. He redshirted that year if I recall correctly. But still, he has always been a player that rebounds and protects the rim. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Gottfather and all that he brings to the table. I do wonder about his player assessment. Much like Tyler Lewis not playing until after Brown’s injury last year.
