Basketball Tips Off Tonight

It seems to happen earlier every year, and the new look Pack will face a “better than pure garbage” foe in Happy Appy (7:00, ESPN3.com). It will be interesting to see how “small” we play, at least for the majority of minutes. I would like to see much more of “Buckets” Warren as a stretch 4, opening up more minutes for Des Lee and Cat Barber. Although with Cat’s concussion issues, we might not see more of the dual PG look until mid-December or so. But I do think we will see it featured heavily in ACC play. And that it will be highly effective.

Perhaps the most unequivocally positive aspect of the Gottfried regime is scheduling. Refreshingly, State only plays two games against likely dregs (ie, RPI worse than 200). Even those two games (Campbell, NC Central) are timed appropriately, giving the Pack a chance to work out the kinks that will likely reveal themselves in Game Two, a tough road test at Cincinnati. How do you make an OOC schedule that interests fans, toughens your team for conference play, and builds a solid NCAAT resume? You play sneakily interesting Nov/Dec home games against the Credit Union, Detroit, and Long Beach State. Only have two real road tests (Cincy and Tennessee)? Play a Dec. 30 road game at middling UNC-G. All smart choices by Gottfried and company.

I have no idea what to expect early on. I do expect the team to build to a strong mid-range contender by January. But the journey to that point starts tonight.

I’ll be there tonight. Can’t wait.
    GO PACK!

  2. Khan 11/08/2013 at 9:54 AM #

My predicton for the regular season: 21-10, assuming my count of 31 regular season games is correct. 18-13 and 23-8 are the tolerance bands, IMO.

If all goes according to history, we will sustain at least 2 more injuries over the course of the season, there will be various chemistry issues, and our free throw shooting should prevent us from winning a few close games.

Regardless of wins/losses, my goal for this season is to see improving fundamental basketball skills and team chemistry as the season progresses. If that does not happen, my faith in Gottfried will deteriorate substantially.

  3. Wulfpack 11/08/2013 at 10:02 AM #

I don’t see us having a good season but like Khan want to see improvement in many areas. Most notably team building and defense. If the chemistry issues continue and we see more transfer I would say Gottffried will be on a short leash. And we won’t be winning many league games if we do not turn it around defensively.

It’ll be exciting to see the young guys compete. Should be a fun season if the boys fight, grow, get better, stay positive.

  5. redcanine 11/08/2013 at 10:21 AM #

Will this be shown on TWC in the 500s somewhere? I checked last night but nothing had been updated. It should be the only game in town, right?

  6. WTNY 11/08/2013 at 10:22 AM #

This is going to be a difficult season.

IMO, we are building for next season. Just hope Warren stays next year.

  7. Alpha Wolf 11/08/2013 at 10:22 AM #

I’ve got a more pessimistic view, with State having a losing record and no post-season. Aside from Warren, they’ve got no reliable and proven inside game, and in the two exhibitions, rebounding told the story — State was out rebounded and challenged against the likes of Pembroke.

That won’t cut it against ACC competition.

  8. tjfoose1 11/08/2013 at 10:37 AM #

Unless both he and the team are utter fails this year, I doubt Warren returns for year 3.

  9. JasonP 11/08/2013 at 10:49 AM #

Low expectations here as well. Not sure how effective the high-post can really be without size and if any of our “bigs” gets in foul trouble we’re toast. Any team with the ability to limit TJW is going to give us fits. Really hoping for some lucky breaks to get into the postseason but not holding my breath.

Here’s my guess – 17/14 regular season. ACCT 2 wins, NIT 2 wins – 21/16 over all. Only two road wins all year, Miami and Clemson.

In preseason communications we’ve heard many times how well the team gets along, hangs out together, and enjoys playing with each other. Hope that is real and can last beyond the first loss. (likely to be the second game at Cincy)

You would think that ‘small ball’ would equate to better FT shooting since we’ll basically have three guards on the court at all times. The pin in that balloon may be TJ. He’s not a good FT shooter and he will have his hands on the ball frequently.

Our biggest problem will happen right away. Every team will assume we are a one man team and try to shut down TJ. At least we’ll have the entire preseason to figure out how to deal with it.

But looking at next year, we should have five excellent guards with the addition of Lacey (top 50 when he came out of HS & Mr Alabama twice), Washington should be really good, Lennard and Anya will have a year of experience – plus we add new talent.

Trying to patient with this team.

  11. BJD95 11/08/2013 at 11:40 AM #

I think NIT has to be the minimum threshhold for this team. That would be “acceptable” while we wait for 2014-15 reinforcements. Though NCAAT qualification is not that hard, and is the necessary benchmark to claim success.

  12. NCStatePride 11/08/2013 at 11:54 AM #

The BJD assessment seems really fair. These days it’s not rocket science to get into the NCAA tournament and while we are weaker than we’ve been in the last few years, we’re definitely not an empty shell of a team. Gottfried has been making the NCAA tournament and finishing with double-digit conference records for the past couple of seasons with ‘thin rosters’ for the past two seasons.

Granted, Gottfried’s first season was wildly successful given expectations, but I’m not so sure that he has terribly less talent than he did when he first got here. Yes, he had more experienced players in the rotation, but they were coming out of a horribly undeveloped Sidney Lowe coaching staff. I’m not saying that I expect another Sweet Sixteen or anything crazy like that, but honestly I would be a little disappointed (though not outright unsatisfied) if we didn’t at least make the NCAAT.

I see some Pack fans predicting 12-14 win type seasons. Some perspective: In the 17 post-Les seasons we’ve had 3 losing records: two of Sid’s teams (and those were both 15-16) and the one terrible Herb season that almost (should have) gotten him fired, right before Hodge & Co. arrived. That team was 13-16.

I know the schedule is tough, but unless you think this team will be Sid Lowe-at-his-worst level bad, we won’t have a losing record.

I predict 18-13. Worst (reasonable) case is 14-17 if the front court is an aboslute disaster, best (reasonable) case is 22-9.

I’m not concerned about being outrebounded against Pembroke. They packed the lane with bodies in order to get rebounds. But in doing so, they surrendered more fast break opportunities for us, and gave themselves fewer of the same. Basically, they chose their poison.

I don’t pretend to know how good or bad we’ll be this year. But I left that second game feeling quite a bit better than I did after the first. I think we have a chance to be a middle-of-the-conference type of team.

  15. Wufpacker 11/08/2013 at 1:02 PM #

    NIT or bust.

    All else is gravy.

  16. Pack Leader 11/08/2013 at 1:03 PM #

Hope Washington & Freeman are ready to step up from the beginning, especially with Vandy down for another 3-4weeks.

Anya has been a real disapointment. I know he is over weight, but there seems to be more to him not playing. Hearing stories of Lewis & Barber out rebounding him in practice are extremely concerning. Hopefully Gott can thin him out by December so he can contribute in 2014…

Its all going to come down to can we rebound/play defense…

  17. TheCOWDOG 11/08/2013 at 1:48 PM #

Who knows? The only thing I would hazard a guesss at is they won’t be as good as half the conference teams in front of them…Or better yet, shouldn’t be.

I’d also predict year end transfers for State, as I would for every team in the country, with no reflection on a coach and staff.

Also, I see year 2 of the Karl Hess no fly zone over PSNC.

As overheard from the ghosts on the South Smoking Porch at Reynolds…..

One old ghost who is known to be short and to the point summed it up….

“They ALL GOTT a lot to learn….”

    Another ghost waxed more poetically….

“Watching the GOTT_3 edition of Wolfpack Basketball, is going to be like having your teenage son and your teenage daughter living in your house again….

    They will make us laugh…
and they will make us sad.

    They will make us happy…
and they will make us mad.

At times, they will be very good….
and then they will be bad.

They’ll fight like cats and dogs among themselves…
but they’ll always have each others back.

By the end of the season…we will be proud.
and there won’t be any days ‘tween then….
we don’t love them because they are the Wolfpack.”

I think we’ll be pretty good once we get Vandy back.

Really anxious for tonight 🙂 … College bball is back!

I expect the team to be pretty effective offensively – we need some help in the post, but we do have several guys who can get it to the rim. *If* we can get rebounds I suspect breaks will once again easily be our best offense.

But that’s the thing – as others have alluded to, defense and especially rebounding will tell the tale.

As for the first day of bball, there are actually a few interesting matchups today:

BC faces Providence – a lot of media are predicting BC to be tournament caliber this season.

Our favorite ‘ACC’ team Maryland (lol) faces Connecticut, there’s also Oregon vs. Georgetown, Wisconsin vs. St. John’s, and Davidson at Duke.

    Go Pack

I think the small lineup idea is intriguing this year keeping in mind that it’s becoming en vogue thus not the small after all.

Freeman is one to keep an eye on because if he can set screens and distribute the ball out of the high post then we could potentially have a nifty half court game. Buckets and Turner stretch the D and allow our backcourt to slice and dice teams up. At its peak the High/Low is a guard dominated system, but somehow I think that because Wooden had Alcinder and Walton the conception became that it was all about the big men.

  22. 13OT 11/08/2013 at 2:49 PM #

If this team goes 21-10, Gott should get National Coach of The Year Award.

I’d say 10-21 would be more realistic. If this team wins a third (6) of its ACC games, that will be about as good as it’ll get. They will probably go .500 or so in the OOC games, but only because most of them are at the PNC.

This is a great schedule for the fans but it’s going to be a real challenge for a young and talent-poor team compared to last season’s squad. But I’m optimistic that “team” basketball will return with the departure of the 3 NBA wannabees. I will miss Richard Howell, though.

  23. Tuffy2 11/08/2013 at 2:54 PM #

It is pretty bad when 99.9 the fan on their show today our asking callers to make a prediction that either the football team will go winless in the acc or TJ Warren will win the scoring title since there is no other go to guy. It is what it is but it still makes me realize we are in a holding pattern when it comes to getting to where we need to be.

It is amazing to think of the football team going winless in the acc. I believe it would not have happen since 1950 something. These really are the dark days and I hate it with a passion.

Let’s hope the BB team can be a surprise to some point and give us something so we may get to the better days which are down the road. Does anybody know how far that road is? Just kidding!

  24. Pack Mentality 11/08/2013 at 3:00 PM #

Who gives a damn about whether we make the NIT or not? You either qualify for the big boy tournament or not. It’s an embarrassment to actually report on the outcome of NIT tournament games if your team does fail to produce a good season and only gets into the tournament that competes for the #69 team in the nation.

  25. JasonP 11/08/2013 at 3:49 PM #

    vtpackfan,
Wooten’s teams are before my time. I’m thinking more of Harrick’s championship team and Bielien’s modified high-post squads. Their best teams always have a sizeable front court. Harrick started a 7 footer when he won it all, and tried to keep a stable of 6’10”-7′ ers at all times. Hoping Vandy really gives a lift in the 2nd half of the season and gives us some match-up advantages and some chances at put-backs.
