Tudor: ‘One of the worst officiating blunders in ACC history’

Caulton Tudor gave out grades after State’s loss to Clemson and Coach Doeren got a solid B. I don’t necessarily argue with that. It is hard to give an A when you lose by two touchdowns. I would’ve supported a B+ if we wouldn’t have had ANOTHER awful time management situation on offense near the end of the first half. Time management mistakes now are becoming commonplace and need to be rectified.

Dave Doeren, N.C. State, B: Although one of the worst officiating blunders in ACC history helped Clemson get a 26-14 win, the Wolfpack took a lot of pluses out of Carter-Finley Stadium.

Coordinator Dave Huxable’s defenders executed a well-crafted strategy that kept Tiger quarterback Tajh Boyd out of sync from the start.

And for a team that was penalized nine times and was working with makeshift quarterback personnel, State’s offense was generally productive most of the night

But as losses go, Doeren’s first at State hardly had the look of a calamity. It’s the opposite, in fact. If the Wolfpack (2-1, 0-1 ACC) can come up with that same level of energy and defensive efficacy nine more times, the final regular-season record will be impressive.

=====>>>>> I don’t know why, but as of 9:15am on Sunday morning the “NC State Wolfpack” is one of the highest trending searches at USA Today’s Big Lead Sports.

=====>>>>> The Atlantic Coast Conference had a nice day on the gridiron yesterday, averting a some disaster when not-so-good Virginia Tech needed three overtimes to best Marshall. But, elsewhere, teams like Miami, Florida State and Syracuse won BIG. Duke helped prove that the league really doesn’t have a pushover. Departing Maryland dominated West Virginia to the tune of 37-0 to make a big statement about the conference’s depth. And, soon to be members Louisville and Notre Dame both delivered impressive wins in their own way.

=====>>>>> I couldn’t help but think of NC State’s Jacoby Brissett yesterday when Florida’s starting quarterback, Jeff Driskell went down with a season ending injury.

=====>>>>> In case you missed it, Saturday’s kick-off against Central Michigan in Carter-Finley Stadium is set for 3:30pm.

=====>>>>> I would comment on these current bowl projections but it is just too early and there is no telling how it will evolve. But, any time we get a unique match-up like Boise State in California I can’t help but raise my eyebrow a bit.

Wait this is the same coach who almost lost to a D2 school, which hasn’t occurred here in 40 years? We were 3 TD favorites against Richmond. What do you guys grade him on that game?

Also he barely beat the spread (+13.5) against Clemson so to give him more than a B, assuming a B means he did a little better than expected, is a hard sell.

The spread is a complex and non-biased measure of the expected outcome based on all known variables (including talent differences, coaching staff and home field advantage). Its like a stock price. Retail investors can opine, but they don’t move the needle. “Smart money” does, the firms with PhD quants who model sports outcomes.

DD did what was expected of him. Maybe you argue that the spread was tighter b/c smart money thinks highly of DD. Before you do, realize that Northern Illinios is -3.5 against Purdue next week, with no DD on the sidelines.

I think our starters on both side of the ball can play with any team. Our D line is beast, one of the best in all NCAA. Our O line not so much. Definitely our weakest part followed by our depth at corner. I wonder how Thursday would have gone if Crisp was healthy? He may have shut Beasley down, maybe not. Maybe the sack fumble would have never happened? Regardless, if we are healthy and focused, we could win the rest of our games except one (which you never know, but not holding my breath). Crazy to think about a double digit win season. Question is, can we stay focused? Can we stay healthy? Two very real problems that plagued Obrien.

    Packalum44 – I agree.

I thought we had a great game plan vs. Clemson. However, time will tell just how effective DD is here. In Amato’s 1st season, he went to Clemson undefeated (and we lost a close one there). In TOB’s first season, we beat ECU and UNC (something Amato never did). He also beat UNC 5 times in a row (again, something Amato never did.)

I remember Sendek, Lowe, MOC, Amato and TOB all being seen as the “coach” who would allow us to turn the corner.

DD’s first chance to do something his predecessor never could do is in 2 Saturday’s. TOB never beat Wake at Wake while our HC and Amato didn’t do that his last 2 tries.

We’ll have a better feeling that there’s a new era afoot in terms of results when we see how the road impacts this football team.

One of the talents the characterizes good coaching is figuring out to make a team play hard all the time whether they are winning or not. DD and his staff have that talent where TOB certainly did not. The Jimmy V saying to “not give up, never give up” is fulfilled on this team . TOB’s teams did not have it. Expect great things in State football in the future. The defense was awesome against Clemson. Eliminate the penalties or even half of them and the game would have had a different outcome. Jimmy V’s philosophy should be the moniker of every sport at NC State. It should remain principal legacy of JV at State.

I don’t understand how the replay didn’t overturn the call. If that wasn’t clear enough video evidence to make the right call, I’m not sure what they’re expecting. Heck, even my Carolina fan friends who watched that agreed we got hosed. The Clemson fans just muttered something incomprehensible behind their Danny Ford for President lapel pins. It was that bad…

What I want to know and maybe has been covered somewhere… did Clemson actually call a timeout on the pick 6? Was that looked at closely on the TV coverage?

  7. Wulfpack 09/23/2013 at 2:29 PM #

BrownCAT, by rule it was not a reviewable play. Stinks but that was/is the case. We all agree it was a terrible whistle, but once blown we were toast.

Seems like we’ve been on the receiving end of a disproportionate number of game changing bad calls in the revenue sports.

“I remember Sendek, Lowe, MOC, Amato and TOB all being seen as the “coach” who would allow us to turn the corner.”

Ha!!! At one time I thought maybe two of those guys might’ve done something special in Raleigh, but the other three, NEVAH!!!

Still flustered at the call. But again Clemson is the number 3 team in the nation. And we stood toe to toe with them, with a back up QB, and a lot of freshman, against their team of veterans. The future is bright, and could even happen this year, with the return of Mitchell. I look forward to the success he will bring to the team.

  11. Wulfpack 09/23/2013 at 9:40 PM #

I don’t have any kind of read if he would leave us for a bigger job, but only an idiot doesn’t listen when big dollars are on the line. He has age on his side. I agree it is all very premature, but I do think if he gets us to eight or more wins there will be suitors this very year.

“Wait this is the same coach who almost lost to a D2 school, which hasn’t occurred here in 40 years?”

Still waiting… University of Richmond is a D-I, FCS school.

  13. BassPacker 09/24/2013 at 7:54 AM #

Coach DD leave? Doeren loves to fish…..NCSU has one of the nations best bass fishing teams…Raleigh is blessed with great area lakes. Get Coach DD on the water as often as possible tangling with some of those big bass and he will be hooked. Great school, great fans, great lakes…what more does he need…right?

  14. PackFamily 09/24/2013 at 8:44 AM #

PackAlum44 – No, that’s not what a stock price is. And if you are in a “wait-and-see” mode with a stock price like you are with Doeren, expect lower returns .

A statistical approach to everything is like the man with a hammer….

But as a State fan who has been burned by this before, i can see why you are cautious with your optimism. Me? I bought a truckload of kool-aid. It arrived at Doeren’s press conference.

““Wait this is the same coach who almost lost to a D2 school, which hasn’t occurred here in 40 years?”

Assuming the OP is referring to Div. I-AA or FCS schools, the last time was actually Dick Sheridan’s loss to East Tennessee State in 1987, 26 years ago.

“Wait this is the same coach who almost lost to a D2 school, which hasn’t occurred here in 40 years?”

What is this “almost” shit anyway? Is there anyone here who would complain if we “almost” lost the rest of our games and finished 11-1 and “almost” played for the NC?

This team has a razor thin margin of error. We need to focus on moving forward, not on the past missed call. Nothing is going to change with that.

  18. packshrimpman 09/25/2013 at 3:34 PM #

Has Cato-Bishop’s status been released? We sure lost a lot of pressure on Boyd without his presence up front! Looked like a high ankle injury.

  19. PackFamily 09/26/2013 at 11:25 AM #

^ CDD said Cato-Bishop is questionable and is hoping to get him back this week.
