The Carolina Way Revisited

new-carolina-mascot-03-smallWe wanted to make sure that you good folks knew about the newest developments on PJ Hairston’s excellent adventure to Durham and had a place to voice your thoughts on the matter.  You can refresh a little by reading this quick piece…

UNC’s top scorer P.J. Hairston charged with possession of marijuana (USAToday.com)

According to police, Hairston was stopped at an intersection for a license check at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. He and two other passengers face misdemeanor drug charges. Hairston also was charged with driving without a license.

“Coach Williams and (director of athletics) Bubba Cunningham are aware of a situation that took place last evening with P.J. Hairston,” UNC senior associate athletic director for communications Steve Kirschner said in a statement. “We’re currently looking into it to gather the facts. We will issue a statement when we have enough information to do so.”

Now, the bold that highlights that last sentence of that first quoted paragraph was added by me for two reasons.  But we’ll get to that in a minute.

Also found at the scene (besides a buttload of weed…but again, we’re getting to that) was a 9mm handgun with ammunition.  I’m presuming that means it was loaded, but who knows?  Maybe whoever put it there also left a box of ammo for whomever might happen by.  I mean it is Durham, after all (and before anyone blasts me, my whole family hails from Durham, so I’m allowed to say that).

Thus far neither PJ nor any of his cohorts have been charged with that particular little beauty.  The gun was found outside of the car incidentally, so the presumption is that someone from the car tossed it.  But who that was exactly has yet to be determined by Durham’s finest.

Now, back to that bold sentence above…well almost.  First, a couple of tweets.

This first was tweeted by Derek Rowles of ABC11 just after the police report of this incident was filed earlier…

Derek Rowles@DerekRowlesMore #Hairston — just filed PD report — Sezied: plastic baggies, 9mm handgun, ammunition, car rental agreement for 2013 Yukon. #ABC11

This next was tweeted by Will Brinson of CBSSports.com a short time later…

Felony marijuana poss in NC is 42.52g. Maybe interesting/lucky police report has 41.1g and 2.1g separate for PJH et al

Now I’m not saying anything fishy is going on here with the way the weight was charged.  In fact it’s very possible that Mr. Hairston was carrying 41.1g on his person while his friend was carrying 2.1g.  So no problem there.  But wait….

Now we turn back to that bold sentence, along with the totality of these tweets.

First of all, the part about misdemeanor drug possession.  We’ve already covered the total weight issue of course.  But what about the part of that first tweet that says “baggies” were among the items seized?  That leads one to believe that perhaps Mr. Hairston was slinging, no?  Is this possibility even being investigated?  I’d presume not since he’s already been charged with the misdemeanor.

Next, we come to the part about the driver’s license.  Mr. Hairston apparently doesn’t have one that’s currently valid.  So then, how did he rent that vehicle?

Oh I forgot, he’s only 20, so he can’t rent a vehicle anyway.  Which begs the question….

Whose name is on that rental agreement?

There are already rumors flying about this incidentally.  I won’t further them here, but I will say this…

Stay Tuned.

“So, unless the gun lost it’s “identity”, there is a record of who purchased it originally.”

Absolutely, but I’m quite sure when you plop down your hand gun permit at your local gun shop that permit (i.e. your personal information) is not communicated back to any data base/authority that is accessible during a routine serial number check. It will only reveal whether the gun is reported stolen, reported used in a crime, etc. If not and you are not a felon or convicted of domestic abuse then you can legally possess the firearm.

However, IF a gun is used in a crime (or say found at a scene such as this) THEN the LEO can check the serial # with the manufacturer, find out where the gun was initially shipped and then go to said gun dealer and retrieve the first purchaser’s info (possibly a warrant would be required to retrieve that info). So the only way the popo can put a name (only the first buyer) to a serial number is to acquire info from the gun dealer where the gun was initial shipped and purchased.

However, back to this situation. This gun found at the scene. They ran a routine serial number check and found that the gun was not reported stolen. So next step to find the owner is to contact the manufacturer, go to where the gun was shipped and retrieve the first buyer info and contact the individual on file and investigate how the gun left their possession, who they gave it to, when they gave it to them or if it was stolen and they didn’t report it stolen, etc. Or at least that is what they should do in this case.

Edit: Adventuroo….I think we are saying the same thing. Initially, I just interpreted that you were saying that it was a one step process to find the first purchaser.

Ok everyone here’s what went down…

PJ and the boys were hanging at PJ’s place
Some thugs broke in, stole PJ’s gun and ran off
PJ jumped in the perps rental car and gave chase
Just as they arrove at the license check
The perps panicked, and threw the gun and the weed they were carrying (and baggies too) at the rental car.
The weed (and baggies too) went in the window, while the gun missed and fell beside the car.

And, that’s the honest truth officer.

One can quibble about the nuances of what makes something against vs. within the realm of law. But, the kid’s packing heat, has a buttload of weed, and is driving without a license. Permissible by law or not, there are plenty of other issues such as responsibility, character, etc. You know, The Carolina Way. I’m sure that in this situation, “second chances” will rise to the top of the list of attributes of TCW (especially given the position needs of the bball team). To err is human; to ignore is The Carolina Way.

Can we use that awesome Thug Heel graphic every time there is a story that references the Holes? Outstanding work.

Pot. 9mm. Rented car. No license. Really BAD BAD part of town (where you are either actively seeking trouble or are Chevy-Chase-in-East-St.Louis-lost).

Used to be Enterprise was the only company that would rent to sub-25 year olds. That certainly may have changed, but I’m 100% certain no one will rent to you without a license.

Minister of Information Control at the Hole is using the dripping diarrhea method: slow release, low odor, no noise, dries before it hits the ground and blends in with everything else over there. Works every freakin’ time. Therefore: NOTHING will come of this.

Just read the articles that choppack is referring to. It took a YEAR for the emails to be released.

But good things come to those who wait, as they reveal that, among other things, “Members of the academic support staff offered Nyang’oro football tickets and the chance to watch a game from the sidelines. One counselor offered to discuss athletes’ coursework over drinks, and another negotiated with Nyang’oro to schedule a no-show class.”

Clear connections between the athletic support staff and the academic staff for the purpose of keeping athletes eligible.

Here’s some related news regarding the UNC PR campaign, which they spent $500k on… $500k! Perhaps if they spent that much money on the “internal investigation”… naahhhhh….

Yep Mr plywood this is biggest story since McAdoo’s paper was released.

Further invalidates the martin report… meanwhile, the NCAA continues to demonstrate the ethical integrity of a rabid dog.
