Not a surprise after all the rumors, but hard to understand how bad things are if a player is willing to sit for a year rather than get big minutes here. That is concerning to say the least.

  2. ILPackfan 04/01/2013 at 2:40 PM #

Well, crap. Guys gotta do what they feel is best for themselves, but the news about Purvis is highly disappointing in light of the other departures. Hope nobody else bails.

  3. Texpack 04/01/2013 at 2:41 PM #

Mass exodus? Seriously? Most people have thought all year that Brown and Leslie would be ready for the draft at the end of the season so losing them was like losing players to graduation. If Purvis transfers, that’s certainly disappointing, but one transfer does not constitute a mass exodus. We’ll be better off in the long run with a group of players that isn’t so focused on personal accomplishment at the expense of the team. Growing pains.

  4. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 2:42 PM #

All eyes now on Warren. He has to stay.

  5. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 2:43 PM #

Do I need to list all the transfers for you? It’s a bunch. And it is not good.

  6. TOBtime 04/01/2013 at 2:51 PM #

I’ll tell you what isn’t good – the picture for any of the guys who left since last year. How did it work out for Painter? Harrow? That’s about how it’s going to work out for Purvis. You think a guy pissed about being benched is going to go nose-to-grindstone for a whole year of waiting?

    True addition by subtraction. BYE

    Wulf

I’ve read he was poor mouthing the coach to recruits. May have been better that he left. That just cannot be tolerated.

  8. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 2:57 PM #

If true I would certainly agree. That cannot be tolerated.

  9. ILPackfan 04/01/2013 at 3:07 PM #

Jeez, I hope that’s not the case. If it is, then yes, good riddance.

Seems to me that Wood tweeting that he wished he had another year and the players will be fine, is a subtle hint at something going on. He didnt wish RP the best or anything.

The Purvis transfer hurts. No more transfers and a Lee pick up could salvage the season. Depth is an issue, but we made it through this year thin and still did some damage. A 5th year transfer big would help greatly.

I disagree with a lot of what’s being said in this thread. There is no mass exodus here, even if Purvis leaves, unless Lewis and Warren join him.

People say Gott went all in on Jefferson last year, even though he still landed three McD AA players in his class. So who did he miss out on, Andrew Young? And how well did he play this season? (I suppose one might argue that it might have led to Painter’s departure, but I don’t see how anyone can know that for sure.)

Nor did he go all in on Randle. He landed two big men already in the upcoming class!

As for transfers, this has already been discussed before. The only player we have missed so far was Painter. Harrow, TDT, and Harris all may have been good enough to contribute, but they were addition by subtraction given their (and Harris’s Dad’s) attitudes. Raymond wasn’t good enough to have a role in the rotation. So Purvis stands to be the second transfer in three offseasons who we will miss. But it seems possible from the rumors that he is another guy with an attitude problem, in which case we are probably better off if he moves on.

Transfers aren’t uncommon with a coaching change. And they also happen occasionally due to playing time if you recruit top players. If we have transfers again the next couple of offseasons, it will be more troubling. The only potential issue I can see with the transfers now is that we have had a couple with bad attitudes (TDT and maybe Harris and Purvis). Is Gott contributing to that in some way (e.g., promising more than he can deliver in terms of minutes, not imposing enough discipline, or something along those lines)? I don’t know how we as fans can really know if that is the case, and I’m willing to give Gott the benefit of the doubt for now.

And why is it that transfer discussion is always focused on those leaving and rarely gives Gott credit for getting Alex Johnson and Ralston Turner to transfer in? And hopefully credit for signing Lee, too. The net result hasn’t necessarily been a negative for the program.

As for next year, hopefully either Purvis isn’t leaving or we land Lee as a replacement. If it’s the latter case, we still have a strong group of guards in Lewis, Barber, Turner, and Lee. It’s still up front where depth will hurt the most. So if we have to have a transfer, better to lose a guard than a forward.

We also have some pending offers out, according to Verbal Commits: SG Bartley, PF Freeman, C Djitte, and C Hamilton. None of those guys are 4-5 star recruits, but they all supposedly have offers from schools like Gonzaga, Arizona, UConn, and others. With the news on Leslie, Brown, and Purvis (if true), maybe that will lead to one or more of these guys committing to State.

I wish guys like Painter, Raymond, Harris, and Purvis (if he is leaving) well. Not so much TDT or Harrow because of the negativity associated with each of their departures.

Regardless, the sky is not falling.

I’m along the lines of the last post. If Purvis and Gott weren’t on the same page, it’s best for both sides for him to transfer. I think that Gottfried learned from this year and has laid out expectations for all of the returning players. If you are on board, great; if not, go somewhere else. We’ll be fine for the future. C’mon everyone, we were lovin’ Gott last year when we made the Sweet 16. Let’s keep lovin’ him.
    Go ‘Pack!

  14. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 8:03 PM #

6 transfers, 2 years. Ain’t normal I tell you that.

  15. Gene 04/02/2013 at 4:59 PM #

Tau, having transfers because of a coaching change is normal.

Having a transfer like Harrow is to be expected.

Losing Painter and Harris is surprising, as Painter had a significant role to play and Harris was getting minutes in the rotation towards the end of the year.

TDT never became the player he was hyped to be coming from Europe and I’m not surprised he transferred. I’m just surprised he did it mid-season.

Now we’ve lost Purvis, who has a huge upside, if he works on his game, given his athleticism.

At some point a great coach gets his players to buy into what he’s selling. For example, Amille Jefferson rode the pine in Durham for most of his freshman year. I don’t think he’s transferring.

I’m not going full blown panic mode yet, but we need to see if Gottfried can get players to buy into what he wants them to do. He did this at the end of his first year. Last season had flashes of players buying in and more flashes of guys, who didn’t.

There’s part of me that thinks what we’ve seen the past two seasons maybe the high watermark for Gottfried, if he can’t hold recruiting classes.

Enough of the depressing news in basketball. We just received the first commitment in football for 2014 .
Bo Hines a 3 star WR from Charlotte, 6-1, 190 lbs with 4.41 speed and 3.75 GPA

There is no need to get desperate State fans. There are still a lot of top 150 players available and some of them have offers from State that they haven’t decided on yet.

Here is the list of recruits in order that I think would be priority:

    1. Desmond Lee-
Not so much because of his position but because of his experience and talent. Not only does he drive to the basket well but he appears to be a very good shooter which we need with Scott Wood gone.

    2. Josh Davis-
His experience on a young team is valuable but he is also a big at 6’8″ who has hops like CJ Leslie.

    3. Mikyle Mcintosh-
Mikyle moves quick, passes and dribbles well for a big guy. He is 6’8″ with his shot blocking abilities he has some versatility to his game. He moves like a point guard but will create opportunities as a forward which is his projected position.

    4. Lennard Freeman-
He is a 6′ 8″defensive specialist who can drive to the basket for easy shots. I don’t know from the videos who is better Mikyle or Lennard but both are strong good looking power forwards. ESPN has Lennard ranked slightly higher than Mikyle. Both are explosive and we would do well with either one.

    5. Sidy Mohamed Djitte-
Future 150 currenty has Sidy ranked at #136 in the country and Lennard and Mikyle didn’t make the list. He is a tenacious shot blocker who at 6′ 10″ seems to have a knack for doing so without making contact. He is thinner than Lennard and and MiKyle but is a true center which we need now. ESPN has Sidy at only 2 stars instead of 3 like Lennard and Mikyle with 72, 70 and 63 grades in order so for lack of certainty I will list Sidy 5th.

^I’d like us to sign all of them!

  19. NCStatefan 04/04/2013 at 6:44 PM #

Here is our depth chart if we signed all these guys:

    F TJ Warren/ M. Mcintosh/ L. Freeman
    PG Anthony Barber/ Tyler Lewis
    G Desmond Lee/ Ralston Turner/ S. Battle/ C. Cannon
    C Beejay Anya/ Djitte Mohamed/ Vandenberg
    F Josh Davis/ Kyle Washington/ J. Robinson

  20. NCStatefan 04/04/2013 at 6:59 PM #

    At Present we are this:
    F TJ Warren
    PG Anthony Barber/Tyler Lewis
    G Ralston Turner/S. Battle/C. Cannon
    C Beejay Anya/ Vandenberg
    F Kyle Washington/ J. Robinson

We definitely need at least another forward. Getting another guard, center and 2-3 more forwards would be perfect.

If Vandenberg steps it up in his senior year, we might be ok at center but he has to anticipate better and be quicker, aggressive but staying far clear of making contact. He should be able to do that with his height advantage. If he can’t score or rebound than we are going to need more than a warm body there.

If Kentucky can have 6 (7 if Wiggins commits) players coming in from the top 13 players in the country to go along with the kids who decided to stay another year, then we might expect that a team like NCSU should be able to bring in some of the players targeted to give us some depth. It has to be the right situation for each kid obviously. Kentucky also has there 7th recruit Derek Willis coming in at #64 committed. Four of the seven new recruits coming in are forwards (5 if Wiggins commits) so it doesn’t hurt to have too many talented forwards.

Kentucky has 13 scholarships available with more players on the team than they have scholarships. Right now NCSU only has 7 scholarships on the team. It’s time for the recruiters to get to work and do a 1st class job of it.

  22. NCStatefan 07/19/2013 at 3:49 PM #

    Update:
NC State recruiters HAVE gone to work doing a first class job of it adding Desmond Lee, Lennard Freeman and Trevor Lacey since last post in April.

Many new offers as well for 2014 since then. There are a slew of exciting possibilities at Power Forward next year that include Leron Black, Jakeenan Gant, Abdul-Malik Abu, Malik Price-Martin, Gary Clark and Ray Kasango. There is strong interest in adding another Center as well.
