Thank you for the update but I think we should update the Freshman class to read Sophomore in both places.

Putting all our chips in for Jefferson last year and Randle this year has not been a good net result (huge understatement).

Now it’s evident that we are not recruiting Gary Clark, a highly productive, hard working, solid skill set guy for 2014 who happens to be from Clayton.

Unless people with some reliable sources know otherwise, we’re in the situation where “we need bodies, especially big men” should beware of the consequences. Dangerous period of just going in last second for guys from places like Lithuania and the likes just to add depth.

We need Vandy to step up in the worst way. Not counting on it but it sure would be nice. Depth has been such an issue and it will be again next year.

Well, if anyone needs a laugh, Ryan Harrow is transferring again (no, not an Apirl Fool’s joke), this time to Georgia St.

We’re in trouble next year if Vandy has to play any significant minutes. In the next two seasons, Gott will be exposed good or bad for his coaching ability.

One final note – it is depressing to see John Beilein (Michigan coach) in the Final Four, when he could have been our coach after Sendek left, yet Fowler with his singular genius messed up the contract and he pulled out.

The post grad transfer rule would probably require the player to actually hold the diploma before even announcing/searching for a transfer. That’s probably a month away from the process even getting started unless there is a player who graduated early.

Have to go ahead and assume TJW files paperwork to be evaluated by NBA and wait until April 15th to know if the above chart includes another (open scholarship).

Between now and then it’s just wait and see. Lee’s decision could happen by end of the week (official visit @ Creighton Wednesday). He can still opt to use his fifth official and go to Baylor or one of the other SEC and ACC schools making a last ditch effort.

A transfer debate of one or both of our rising Sophmore Guards will linger a while too. It behooves them to see what teams out there do on National Signing Day (April 17th).

On paper at least, we look horrible next year. Even with the best case scenario.

  7. BJD95 04/01/2013 at 12:06 PM #

Desmond Lee is absolutely essential. No ifs, ands, or buts.

  8. pakfanistan 04/01/2013 at 12:17 PM #

    I want Josh Davis back.

    BJD95: I agree re. Lee.

    pakfanistan: Me too.

NJPack: I’m not sure the description related to Beiline was correct. The issue there as I remember it was that he had a $3M+ buy out. I think you’re correct that Fowler ended up looking dumb there, but it was for not knowing about the buy out. Fowler would have been tarred and feathered (and rightly so) for replacing HWSNBN with Beiline and paying a $3M buy out to do so.

There was a lot of fail with that coaching search by Fowler. Not understanding why the fans disliked HWSNBN and trying to get Beiline (who at the time played a similar offensive style but with a 1-3-1 defense) was another example of how out of touch Fowler really was.

I have to give Beiline credit. His coaching has changed a lot. He still depends a lot on the three, but he’s played man to man defense this season, is pushing the tempo more and is letting his players drive to the rim. His coaching evolution is impressive.

These high major guys know how to coach any offensive and defensive system. It’s just a matter of preference.

We need bodies badly. I wish he’d have gone for a 5 man class this year. Can’t understand why he wants to sit on schollies. If he’s worried about defections, it makes it worse when we have 8 instead of 12.

  11. wolffpride 04/01/2013 at 12:43 PM #

Wow this fanbase never fails to disappoint. We absolutely dodged a bullet when UCLA hired Alford. And we follow such fortune with complaints about how Gottfried needs to recruit better? Have you seen the two classes he has brought in? How about the Martin twins at the Carolina challenge? Please stop being so ignorant. So we didn’t get 3 quality bigs. BTW we didn’t go all in on Randle, we still got Anya and Washington :). Did someone say our team looks like garbage on paper? Never speak again please. Lewis, Barber, Purvis, Warren and Anya starting. Washington, Turner and possibly Lee off the bench. That is 8 deep with a variety of perimeter defenders. We could be a top 15 team next year. No hype to distract us either. Seriously, thank your lucky stars we are where we are.

  12. rtpack24 04/01/2013 at 12:44 PM #

One would think that Coach Fowler in his search for a coach, one of his first questions to a coach would be do you have a buyout? I am stil amazed that Mary Ann Fox hired Fowler over Bobby Purcell.

  13. vtpackfan 04/01/2013 at 1:04 PM #

We might even have a slight chance of a back up plan at SG. Frank Brantley, prepped at a school in Los Angeles after growing up and playing ball in Baton Rouge. Really solid, major level frame. 6’3″ and in the 215-220 range. I like that Gott has worked hard at looking for a bigger guard to play next to Lewis/Barber. We need to get after it on the perimeter defensively. Maybe a JuCo like Lee, and a late bloomer to become the guy like CJ Williams we sorely missed this year.

  14. TMD11 04/01/2013 at 1:05 PM #

Absolutely agree with the promise of next year – we will not be ‘big’ but will be quick, athletic and certainly 8 deep with no drop off. Only question is about Turner, who should or could start but in reality not that important as all 8 will get plenty of minutes per game AND we play HARD.

  15. vtpackfan 04/01/2013 at 1:13 PM #

Make Javoni Robinson a deal. Work on his game all off season- go to every clinic possible-and show some results from the hardwork. Gott awards him a scholarship and we may get two years of a 5 pt 5 rebound guy playing 10-15 minutes a game.

I know he could be that player, I just doubt he can play in our system and not be lost or useless in executed the High/Low in the half court.

  16. JEOH2 04/01/2013 at 1:20 PM #

One thing I’ll say is that Lewis and Barber will play together, but they won’t start together (that’d be a tiny backcourt). Barber would be the back-up unless he beats out Lewis…reminds me of when folks thought Alex Johnson would come in to start alongside Lo Brown at the 2…makes no sense, out of all positions, to not have a PG to pull off the bench…

Coach has to know that if/when he gets 1 or 2 more guys in the program…he has to allocate a reasonable amount of minutes…with so much youth we have to go 8-9 deep next year to build experience and consistency in the program…

  17. choppack1 04/01/2013 at 1:41 PM #

We are very much in a danger zone for next year.

Assuming no further transfers or departures – which at this time is a huge assumption – or injuries or academic issues – we’ve got 8 scholarship players at this point in time.

On the injury front the last 2 years, we’ve been pretty fortunate.

The comparisons to Amato and “shooting for the stars” but not really having a good plan B have been made.

If all 8 of these guys are in uniform next year – I think we can still have a decent season – and a shot at an NCAA bid.

However, we need depth badly. The only place we look good right now is PG.

It will be interesting to see how/if Gott changes how he recruits, plays and substitutes. Those Top 75 -200 players for a team like NC State are critical…I’m talking about guys like CJ Williams, Cam Bennerman, Trelonnie Owens, Marcus Melvin, llian Evtimov, half of Clemson’s roster and Scott Wood…Most of these guys have the skill to play D1 ball and be solid D1 players. However, there are always guys ranked a lot higher- so if you’re chasing stars, these guys won’t play.

And aside from the very brief career of TDT, I have yet to see Gott bring in these type of kids. I recall someone quoting that one of Gott’s big regrets at Alabama giving too many scholarships to guys who were not good enough to be playing in the SEC. (I thought this statement was kind of odd when he turned around and blamed one of his seasons on an injury.)

I think what you’re seeing from him is that he’s pursuing blue chips – and probably being honest with the second-tier talent. I don’t think it’s a bad thing necessarily if we can fill out a competitive roster…but unless something changes, we might want to get used to saying “What happens if we lose a couple of guys.”

  18. Texpack 04/01/2013 at 1:44 PM #

Almost every program experiences a dip after a coaching change. Sometimes it doesn’t happen until year two or three. That depends on whether or not the fired coach had a decent amount of talent on the roster when he got fired.

Really good teams have 4 year guys that play along side the one and two year guys. Howell, Wood, and CJW provided some glue guys in Gott’s first two years. Lewis will be a good four year guy. TDT was probably recruited for that purpose as well.

It’s hard to criticize the recruiting Gott has done so far. He missed on Jefferson and Randle. When you go after those kinds of guys you aren’t going to win every battle. You may fault him for not having fall back plans for those two but you can’t fault him for having a roster half filled with scholarship players that can’t contribute. Vandy was added as a late cycle project one year just to have another body and we have ended up with a body and not much more.

Building depth takes time. I will judge Gott on roster composition after year four.

    Vtpck – Bartley?

If Warren, Purvis, and Lewis all decide to stay, we really don’t have a huge issue here. The real problem comes if one or, God forbid, all 3 of them decide to move on this year. It appears that Warren is seriously considering testing the waters in the draft. A Purvis transfer has been rumored for while now and there are some hint that he could be heading to Uconn. Lewis has also been rumored to be looking elsewhere – potentially as a package deal with Purvis.

To this point, it’s all rumors, and let’s hope they are all false rumors. If they all stay, I think we’ll be in position to compete for a tourney berth by the end of the season assuming our new “bigs” develop at a reasonable/accelerated pace.

If they leave though, look out. It could be 3+ years before we’re even sniffing the tournament again. And that’s assuming the revolving door that we’ve had in the last 2 years comes to a halt and Gott can start to seriously build and develop some depth.

“We could be a top 15 team next year.”

What I am about to say next I mean in the nicest way possible: Shutup, just shut up : )

  22. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 2:19 PM #

Do we have an advantage with Lee because he is from nearby ? (Norfolk, VA)

  23. Clarksa 04/01/2013 at 2:26 PM #

    Purvis is gone.

@jwgiglio: Rodney Purvis has decided to transfer from N.C. State, the school is expected to make the announcement this afternoon

  24. ILPackfan 04/01/2013 at 2:30 PM #

If the rising talent holds up (and stays at NCSU), then we may be a little young and thin, but we can still field a competitive team next year despite losing 80% of the starting lineup. If anyone else jumps ship at this point, then I’d say we’re going to be too young and undermanned to end up in the top half of the league standings. Still curious either way to see if any other quality players get brought in for depth.

  25. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 2:30 PM #

Yep, Purvis has left us. I would like to know what is going on here. Mass exodus. Not good.
