Final Four/Scary Wheat Appreciation Thread

The first weekend of the dance was excellent (apart from a certain unnamed team’s flameout/bedshitting session that we, in retrospect, should have expected). However, the second weekend contained mostly uncompetitive and/or sloppy action. As well as the elimination of our beloved Coach Andy (ok, Coach Andy’s wife) and his scrappy Credit Union warriors.

But we are not meme-less, as Gregg Marshall, his Pat Riley hair, and the scary animatronic wheat/nightmare fuel of a mascot live on. A 9 seed that will earn me a pay-out in a small pool (where I got no Final Four teams right, but accurately picked Syracuse and Wichita State to make the Elite Eight) with a victory today. It’s best team (Louisville) vs. best story (Scary Wheat) in the opener, and classic offense (Michigan) vs. defense (Syracuse – I suspect the Hoosiers still see that smothering zone in their sleep) in the nightcap.

Fun and merriment certainly await in the comments.

But that shouldn’t detract from Louisville’s effort. Great heart, great discipline while sustaining pressure for a really long time.

Scary Wheat sure as hell belonged on that stage, though.

Yes, they definitely represented themselves well and proved they belonged and were no fluke.

And I just can’t find a rooting interest for the nightcap. Completely neutral about both squads. I suppose Michigan would be a more entertaining finals matchup, not being a multiple repeat game and all.

My kid said early in the tournament that a 4 seed would win it all. The last time he made a prediction like that was the Cardinals to the Super Bowl.

Dislike both these teams, but since Boeheim dislikes the 2nd Amendment per his pro gun control comments in a previous post game presser….I’ll pull for Big Blue.

  6. Wufpacker 04/06/2013 at 9:31 PM #

    I hate them both.

Agreed that Michigan would be the more interesting matchup, but can’t help thinking the announcers on Monday wouldn’t shut up about “Future ACC/Lame Duck Big East” matchup if it’s ‘Cuse, which might have some entertainment value I suppose.

    Dave Bing lives.

  8. Wufpacker 04/06/2013 at 9:41 PM #

Believe it or not, as a youngster I attended Dave Bing’s basketball camp (Wes Unseld’s too).

Bing was also the next door neighbor of a very good friend for a short time.

I think we will see the Colonel Sanders suit holding up the trophy regardless. They really got pushed to the limit tonight. That usually makes a top team that much better.

Trust me folks when I tell you that you will come to utterly loathe Syracuse in a short time.

  11. BJD95 04/06/2013 at 9:53 PM #

This is how you penetrate a zone – with exceptional ball movement. Well done, Wolverines.

Oh, how I loathe the Buffalo Wild Wings commercials. I has never eaten there, and ne’er I shall.

  12. Wufpacker 04/06/2013 at 9:56 PM #

    Already there Alpha.

EDIT – Lived in northeast PA for a short while and that place was crawling with those smug a-holes. It was an even split between them, Penn State and ND fans, and maybe 1 in 100 attended any of the 3 schools.

So is the Gregg Marshall mancrush officially over now?

  14. TheCOWDOG 04/06/2013 at 10:00 PM #

    Why is that Alpha?

  15. BJD95 04/06/2013 at 10:02 PM #

The fact that we like you so much, despite being a Yankee/ND combo fan from upstate NY…take it as a great compliment, cowdog! 😀

  16. Alpha Wolf 04/06/2013 at 10:04 PM #

‘Dog – read Wufpacker’s comment. Syracuse fans are like UNC Wally Worlders on Steroids.

  17. Wufpacker 04/06/2013 at 10:08 PM #

LOL…yeah, it was crawling with Yanks fans too.

My next door neighbor up there was a die hard Yanks fan, but he was the reasonable sort like you sometimes are ‘Dog. 😀

My first trip to Yankee Stadium (the old one) was with him for the Os series to end the ’97 season in fact. Good dude he was. Need to look him up.

Yes. Syracuse fans are terrible. I’d rather be hit in the head with a battery hurled at me by a Maryland fan.

  19. TheCOWDOG 04/06/2013 at 10:13 PM #

Hey…told you guys I have the primer in my back pocket on how to take care of those Yankee bastards.

    I roll with y’all. But don’t trust me 🙂

I watched that HBO documentary about tOSU/UM rivalry…and I gotta say, everyone they talked to seemed pretty douchey themselves.

Maybe that’s tonight’s object lesson – the universality of douchehood.

  21. Wufpacker 04/06/2013 at 10:22 PM #

I’ve never had a whole lot of dealings with either tOSU or UM fans. The UM fans around us at the ’94 bowl in Tampa were pretty dickish while their team was beating the shit out of us though, so there’s that.

  22. Hawkeye Whitney 04/06/2013 at 10:27 PM #

Glad I turned my attention from the final four just long enough to see the Braves’ walk off HR to beat the cubbies

  23. BJD95 04/06/2013 at 10:28 PM #

Like beating the shit out of that State team was something to brag about. We had just lost like 70-7. It would be like taunting that KS team we beat in the subpar bowl PR’s last year.

  24. BJD95 04/06/2013 at 10:29 PM #

Both Uptons homered in the 9th. Cool shit.

  25. Wufpacker 04/06/2013 at 10:44 PM #

^^ Yup. We were on the edge of being really bad, and if memory serves that UM team had been top ten preseason but lost a few close heartbreakers and were thus relegated to that crappy bowl.

Beat us like a rented mule that day on a miserable day weather wise. Then we hit ice storms driving back to NC IIRC. That trip just sucked all the way around.

We did hit Epcot the day before though 😀
