Thursday ACCT Seeding Watch

With only one game left for State, it appears the Pack can still be seeded anywhere between 3rd-5th for the ACC Tournament. The 3rd or 4th seed is uber-important because it’s unlikely any team will win four games in four days (it’s never been done in the ACC). So, starting on Friday matters.

Obviously, upsets happen (see: Georgia Tech’s tip-in winner over Miami last night), but Saturday chalk is 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3. Most likely, Miami will be one and Duke two. Carolina has secured at least a four, so they are guaranteed a bye to Friday.

Here are the apparent scenarios for State:

State will be the 3rd seed if:
NCSU wins out AND Virginia finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC loses to Duke

State will be the 4th seed if:
NCSU wins out AND UVA finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC beats 2-0

State will be the 5th seed if:
None of the above happens.

So right now, tonight, you should all be rooting for Florida State.

This is also being discussed over on the upgrade-in-progress SFN Forums.

“The Way You Look Tonight” was done by the Lettermen.

And that’s who’d better step up Saturday afternoon.

Glad we finally have control of our destiny. Beat FSU, and we are top 4, and if the devils take care of the holes, we are 3. Thanks FSU!

We got the help we needed. Now we need to take care of business. Need suffocating D from opening tip to final buzzer–no lulls, no excuses, no cockiness from prior FSU game at PNC. Just kick their ass. Go Pack!!

Based on my read of the tiebreaker rules, Miami will be 1 and Duke 2 no matter what happens this weekend. Miami wins all Duke tiebreakers because they haven’t lost to us, the Holes, or the Hoos. Duke wins all Hole tiebreakers because they beat Miami once.

So…we want #4. Let the blues kill each other in the semis. Plus, that assures we can’t have an all-blue final, which I would boycott as always. Blech.

I don’t think Miami will be an easy out for us, though. We played awesome (no Zo, but still…awesome) and they still beat us. In Raleigh.

NC State 1-1 should work if UVA looses the next game right? It wasn’t in the OP

  6. JeremyH 03/07/2013 at 10:20 PM #

So who do we play first if we finish 3, 4, or 5, is that part obvious yet? (for round one, two..)

  7. Mike 03/07/2013 at 10:27 PM #

The 4 spot might be preferred but I want the 3 to finish ahead of Huckleberry Hound.

    Seedings…..

    Don’t need a spreadsheet……

    http://www.theacc.com/this-is/accstandings.html#mbb

We have a solid lock on 4th.

    Scenarios…..

    Duke beats UNC.
    We beat FSU.

We are tied for 3rd, Still tied as we beat each other ONCE. The tie breaker goes to US as BOTH of us lost to Miami. You advance to Duke. TIE BROKEN. UNC lost to DUKE 2 times and us only 1. We are 3 seed and UNC is 4th. UVA plays on Thursday.

    UNC beats Duke
    We beat FSU.
UNC has ONE less loss…..so they are 3 and we are 4.

IF WE lose and UVA loses and UNC wins….UNC is 3rd. We are 4th and UVA is 5th.

Therefore, we COULD lose, but the Gods (and the Refs and Swofford, et. al.) would have to be really hacked at us….because if UVA wins….then we are 5th as UVA beat us and has the tie breaker.

UNC’s game does not impact our ability to get the BYE….their loss only helps us with the position.

It is NOT possible NOW for a three way tie….which is good…..as in a three way, UVA would be First; UNC second and leaving us with the uttermost mammary gland on the large female bovine…..

Hope this explains it. I think it is right. I checked with my resident Guru and Sr. Management approved the logic.

Im salivating at the thought of getting Miami in the semis…4 seed > 3 seed for me.

in other news we are crap at tennis : (

To all the math-heads out there, what are the odds that we lose to FSU and UVA beats Maryland?

This 4th place or higher thing is a big deal, because its lose-lose otherwise, amiright? With 5th place, if we make it to Sunday then we are completely gassed with our short roster for the NCAA tournment which has a quick turnaround. If we don’t make it to Sunday, well, that means we didn’t have a real chance of winning it.

    thanks… adventuroo..

….some guys like figuring all this S&*t out…
….some guys like reading the short version….

takes both guys to make a SFN ….

  13. JohnGalt78 03/08/2013 at 12:16 AM #

again….I declare my hope for the 4 spot…having the least resistance to Sunday is more important than owning the 3 spot. Miami is on the down tick. Duke, the up tick. I don’t get those that want to play Duke on Saturday. Please explain???

  14. mak4dpak 03/08/2013 at 12:33 AM #

We have to first and foremost beat FSU, and then let be what will be. But a win gets the bye, and get Thursday off.

“FSU’s defense looked strong tonight most of the time, but it’s a lot easier against a team with one key scorer (Harris). Mitchell can do some damage as well, but Evans is so brutal FSU didn’t have to guard him unless he drove the lane. They won’t have that luxury against us unless we put Vandy in to run the point.”

*insert exploding head scene from “Scanners”*

I’d be more than happy with a 4. As BJD said so eloquently, “Let the blues kill each other in the semis.”

I’d love another shot at Miami should it work out that way.

re: the game with FSU, I didn’t realize it before, but it’s a quick turnaround for the Noles playing tonight and at 2pm on Saturday. Here’s to Snaere hitting a last second shot to cut the gap to single digits…

Lest we forget that we are NC State. How often do we follow through when given the opportunity to settle our own fate and especially on the road. I hope Calvin shows up and not CJ.

  18. patientwuf 03/08/2013 at 9:30 AM #

It’s time to put our big boy pants on and take care of business.
Losing to FSU would be devasting to this team regardless of the shake out in ACCT seedings. Need to keep the mojo.

  19. drspaceman 03/08/2013 at 9:52 AM #

“To all the math-heads out there, what are the odds that we lose to FSU and UVA beats Maryland?”

according to kenpom, we have a 67% shot of beating FSU and UVA 82% probability of beating maryland.

The chance of us losing and UVA winning is 33%*82% = 27%

I want 4th, revenge against VA in QF, revenge against Miami in SF, Win the best of 3 against Blue in the finals.
