Thursday ACCT Seeding Watch

With only one game left for State, it appears the Pack can still be seeded anywhere between 3rd-5th for the ACC Tournament. The 3rd or 4th seed is uber-important because it’s unlikely any team will win four games in four days (it’s never been done in the ACC). So, starting on Friday matters.

Obviously, upsets happen (see: Georgia Tech’s tip-in winner over Miami last night), but Saturday chalk is 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3. Most likely, Miami will be one and Duke two. Carolina has secured at least a four, so they are guaranteed a bye to Friday.

Here are the apparent scenarios for State:

State will be the 3rd seed if:
NCSU wins out AND Virginia finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC loses to Duke

State will be the 4th seed if:
NCSU wins out AND UVA finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC beats 2-0

State will be the 5th seed if:
None of the above happens.

So right now, tonight, you should all be rooting for Florida State.

This is also being discussed over on the upgrade-in-progress SFN Forums.

    Let’s go FSU!

Have your game of the year tonight, then tank it on Saturday! I believe in you, ‘Noles!

using kenpom winning chances from yesterday i made a little excel sheet that can calculate the chances of us getting different seeds based on the games that are important (and using all the tiebreak rules of the acct). According to those probabilities we have a 26% chance of a 3 or 4 seed. If UVA loses one of their next two games that percentage shoots up to 75%. We really need to pull against the Hoos.

Last time Hoos and Noles played Hamiltons crew scored 36 points-total. This will be the easiest road game UVa has had to date.

Yeah Go Noles, but I’m not liking their chances …

4 games in 4 days for this very thin Pack bunch would be a very tall order. It would also hurt us in the NCAAs, especially if we got a quick turnaround for a Thursday game in the Midwest or even West. Remember Cuse not long ago? Incredible Big East run and flamed out quickly. I’m all for playing hard for championships, I would just rather it be an NCAA, not ACC.

Ugly start with the Noles looking terrible. WHO SAW THAT COMING???

Don’t know if I’m gonna be able to go all the way with this thriller.

  7. Wulfpack 03/07/2013 at 7:12 PM #

FSU is really hard to watch.

  8. Wufpacker 03/07/2013 at 7:16 PM #

UVa ain’t exactly a feast for the eyes either to be honest.

We don’t want the 3 slot, right? 4 better for us, right? Avoid Dook until Sunday in the 4 spot.

I’m not sure I’m reading the seeding rules right… It appears that, under number 3, if we win this weekend, UNC loses to Duke, and UVA wins out, we will each be 12-6. This tie will be broken based on winning % against the top team, moving downward. Since we all lost out to Miami, then it moves to Duke. UVA is 1-0 vs Duke, and therefore becomes the 3 seed. It then changes to break the tie using rule number 2. Again, UNC and NCSU lost to Miami, so the record vs Duke is used. UNC would be 0-2, and we would be 1-1, so we would then earn the 4th seed and UNC would be the 5 seed.

So, am I reading the tiebreak rules wrong?

“We don’t want the 3 slot, right? 4 better for us, right? Avoid Dook until Sunday in the 4 spot.”

^I don’t necessarily agree. I just want a bye. I think we have an opportunity to take Duke on Saturday or Sunday provided that both teams are there.

  12. drspaceman 03/07/2013 at 7:32 PM #

cincypack, yes you’re reading it wrong. if there is a three-way tie (or two-way for that matter), the first tiebreaker is the record against those you’re tied against. For UNC/UVA/NCSU that breaks down to this:
    UVA: 2-1
    UNC: 2-2
    NCSU: 1-2

  13. CincyPack 03/07/2013 at 7:36 PM #

Ahhhh… Yeah, I was misreading part (a) of rule 3. Thanks for the clarification on that.

reading the entrails of a sheep/goat/ram:
    5th.
    Hoos handle Noles.
    Holes defeat Devils.
    no breaks.
    we’re State.

Announcer gives Fla St the kiss of death….”that was their best first half of the year”

  16. JohnGalt78 03/07/2013 at 8:01 PM #

Pup, of course….the bye is the priority. once in the top four, I still would feel better in the 4 now that Kelly is back.

    Sacred sacks of excrement……Bat Man…..

When FSU just nailed that three and UVA is down 11, I KNOW that the cheer that I just heard came from the Case Center video room…..I live about 6 miles (crow flies) from it and I heard the same noise when we were invited to the Dance last year.

Will FSU keep up the pace? I HOPE that UVA does challenge them and totally use up every piece of emotional and physical strength that they have….

And I will personally buy all the adult beverages tonight that they need….as well as into Saturday…..to keep them partying…..

My wife, an ARDENT Anti-FSU person, just did a tomahawk and uttered the obnoxious Da-Da-DAAAh-D-Dah noise.

    That is SERIOUS…..

Noles may win it, but the Hoos are absolutely conducting a clinic on proper boxing out for rebounds…

  19. MrPlywood 03/07/2013 at 8:49 PM #

Noles not getting any calls in the paint.

  20. wufpup76 03/07/2013 at 8:51 PM #

Well, here we go … I fully expect the Noles to get mauled here with no call as time runs out.

  21. wufpup76 03/07/2013 at 8:53 PM #

    And I stand corrected.

  22. Wufpacker 03/07/2013 at 8:54 PM #

I really hope we don’t have a 3 point or fewer lead down there with the ball in Snaer’s hands at the end on Saturday.

  23. Fastback68 03/07/2013 at 8:55 PM #

    Suck it Virginia.

  24. wufpup76 03/07/2013 at 8:55 PM #

Well, the door is open. Now we just have to beat the same Noles we just cheered for hahaha

  25. MrPlywood 03/07/2013 at 8:55 PM #

    Thx Noles.
