Take A Look At The 2013-14 Freshman Class for Wolfpack Basketball

While the potential losses of players from the NC State program due to graduation, turning pro or even transferring will be heavy, the roster for next year will definitely see an infusion of talent into the program that will pave the way for a solid squad that will be the core of a potential ACC championship-level squad over the next few years.   The ’13-’14 class players are incredibly talented, have a high level of basketball IQ and are going to make the Wolfpack faithful quite happy while they are here in Raleigh.   They are

Cat Barber

The nationally third-ranked point guard in the class of 2013, according to CBS Sports, Cat Barber has the tools to be a starter in Raleigh from day one over Tyler Lewis, who proved himself to be an effective player at the ACC level in the second half of last season.  He has excellent speed — and a lightning fast first step — and has the moved to beat defenders off of the dribble into the lane.  There, Barber is a solid finisher with a high scoring percentage.  He’s also got good accuracy from beyond the three point line, making him a double-threat who will serve to loosen up packed in defenses that want to stop the Wolfpack bigs from scoring.  Barber is also in superb condition now — he won’t come into the program as a young stick-figure type still growing into his body.

One of Barber’s skills — jumping into passing lanes and going the other way on the fast break — will be something that can change games in a hurry and will be a skill that will suit the uptempo style of ball that has become the standard since Mark Gottfried came to Raleigh.

Here’s a couple quick looks at Barber:

BeeJay Anya

Hailing from Germantown, Maryland, BeeJay Anya follows a long line of Wolfpack players to come from top-notch DeMatha Catholic High School: former Wolfpack greats Kenny Carr, Sidney Lowe and Derek Whittenberg are former Stags, as are other great players such as Keith Bogans, Adrian Dantley, Joseph Forte and Danny Ferry.  He could well be the replacement for the graduating Richard Howell, a player who’s post presence was quite often the savior of many a Wolfpack offensive possession the past couple of seasons.  The 6’9″ Anya is a muscular 265 pounds, and will be a load for defenders to keep away from the rim.

He’s been described as an “old school center” – the kind of player who makes the paint his own and one who is not afraid to use his bulk to earn himself room to operate.  He’s also been described as having “freakishly long arms” – he has a 7’9″ wingspan but still needs to work a bit on his offense.  The upside on Anya is incredible, and depending on how quickly the young man grows his game at the college level, the Wolfpack could have Richard Howell’s replacement in uniform at the start of the season.

Kyle Washington

Kyle Washington, a four-star recruit, may have a lot to talk about with “Washington is an extra long and athletic lefty power forward that is oozing with potential,” according to ESPN.com’s scouting report. “He runs the floor effortlessly. Can finish drop off passes created by dribble penetration on the break and in the half court with length not strength.” Washington chose N.C. State over Louisville, Ohio State, Washington, Marquette and several other Division I schools.

Brewster Academy’s head coach, Jason Smith, told [bleacherreport.com’s Jon Hancock] of Washington, “Kyle is an excellent forward who can be successful at any program in the nation. He’s a tremendous young man who would be a great asset to any college community and program.”

Washington is also a good defensive rebounder, blocks shots, hustles constantly and often scores easy baskets as a result of his hard play.  From the looks of the tape I have seen, Washington has a sweet hook shot and in some ways recalls Thurl Bailey with stronger defense at this point in his career.  Those comparisons can be dangerous, however, as Bailey was a bona fide ACC stalwart who then had a 11-year stint in the NBA, followed by four in Europe before finally finishing out his pro days back in the Association for one last year.  Washington has yet to accomplish any of that, of course, but at first look, he definitely stirs memories of Bailey…and if he turns out to anything like Bailey was in a Wolfpack uniform, State fans will be happy indeed with this young man’s play.

Obviously, Gottfried does have some holes to fill, however, as the misses on Julius Randle and other players, plus players like Lorenzo Brown and CJ Leslie turning pro could leave the Pack in a pinch for bodies to put on the floor.  Some of that will come from Ralston Turner, the LSU transfer that becomes eligible next year, and still other help could come from SG Desmond Lee, a highly sought SG from the Juco ranks who’s visiting Raleigh this week.  CJ Leslie — whose draft stock took a dip in 2012/13 — could return and give the Wolfpack some scoring power.  If Leslie does return, and if his defense and mid-range jumper were to improve over the offseason, then State could be a young but quite dangerous squad in the 2013/14 season.

If RP and TJW leave, really takes the shine off our great recruiting haul. Maybe it’s time I stopped following recruiting. An occasional one-and-done is to be expected, but starting from scratch every fall is a depressing thought.

So when are the open tryouts? My little brother will be in Raleigh and has some size on him.

But seriously,Davis, Harrow, Raymond, Painter, Harris, DeTheay, Purvis…I could field a half decent team with our transfers alone.

“If you aren’t happy with us saying it, and/or don’t trust our sourcing, you are more than welcome to not believe it, or just look elsewhere.”

I would trust your “sourcing” if you had any. I asked for some sort of source in my first post but obviously got nothing.

  4. OutWestWolf 03/28/2013 at 1:32 PM #

IMO – I think it should be understandable that you can’t just out every source. Some us really struggle with subtleties here.

  5. Daniel_Simpson_Day 03/28/2013 at 1:43 PM #

Bon jour gopack10, it’s on the internet so it has to be true. But seriously, if you spend enough time around here you figure out pretty quickly who to believe and who not to. BJD’s “gossip” is usually pretty close if it’s not a coaching search.

  6. ringo 03/28/2013 at 1:45 PM #

I’d be extremely disappointed if Purvis leaves. He was my favorite on the team. Seems he may not be what I thought he was I guess. I really don’t see how his play was the fault of anyone else. Kid got major time at 2, was even tried at 1. No way he deserved more time than TJW or Lo. He played more than Lewis which was questionable by the end.

Can’t believe he would rather sit somewhere else than have a chance for all ACC, hometown hero, etc… A few things just need to be honed and he will be a great college player. I don’t understand who could be advising him that this would be best. Seems crazy to me.

  7. BJD95 03/28/2013 at 2:17 PM #

LOL, exactly right. Each of the last two coaching searches fooled a sh-t ton of people. Myself included!! 😀

    Great post-thank you.

The tangents by some cast and crew of SFN followers-WOW! Adult ADD?

Would the mess that attrition could cause make the concept of back to back great recruiting classes lose its luster? Yes. But we already have 2014 lining up great with the Martin twins. They destroyed it at Teleps Carolina Challenge. They bring some seriously high energy and versatility that would provide great synergy for the 2014 team and beyond. One rebuilding year followed by two, maybe three strong NCAA teams is a major step forward in only 5 years under a new regime (recall first 5 of Sendek).

Is the “we need more bigs right now” mantra a great cause of concern? It depends how you objectify it. We did ourselves a huge service signing Anya and Washington-both are high major, great ranked big man. Many programs would kill to have that. This years class of incoming bigs is very questionable. Get outside of our two and you find yourself in the volatile “project” player quickly.

The Josh Davis storyline will not gain any substance unless/until Calvin makes and announces his decision. Just keep in the back of your mind that Josh (grew up loving the Pack) saw first hand what Howell and Leslie looked like and performed as a few years back. Now they’re All ACC guys who are ready for the next level. The playing time and proven track record of our coaches to utilize these players has to garner some interest.

You certainly are obstinate. If the authors of the site feel strongly enough to state it that emphatically they have heard something. Why would they say their “source” as that would cause info to dry up. Either believe it or not but they are not going to tell you the “source”

Similar paradigm to Calipari. Recruit the best players, RUN a high paced offense and defense/free throws/fundamentals are of a tertiary concern.

It is EARLY but Gott’s recruiting exploits here have been similar to what Calipari pulled in while at Memphis in terms of class rankings.

Similar to Cal’s big leap in recruiting (he was landing top 10 classes at Memphis), Gott’s recruiting would increase too! No one will match Cal thus, a poor man’s Cal is a perfect descriptor.

This is a serious question that I would like some honest feedback by real Wolfpackers:

At what point do we begin to ask questions of a coaching staff that is losing so many guys to transfer in 2 years? This kind of stuff hurts the school’s image nationally and will eventually hurt recruiting. especially when you consider that the one guy that IS staying is the guy who re-posted a tweet about his coach’s terrible coaching. I am really on the fence about this. I had my doubts about MG after some of the things that were obviously not addressed during this season (good coaches don’t let anything just slide under the table hoping it gets better), but I was holding on out on thefact that he could recruit and maybe the players liked him. But if all of our recruits transfer and are discontented…on top of the obvious coaching issues…what does that say about our current situation and expectations of our coach and program?

  12. PackerInRussia 03/28/2013 at 2:38 PM #

I’d be content to watch a mixtape of Cat Barber hitting free throws over and over.

Great about the recruits and thanks for the info. But, a little concerned about the end numbers. If Howell, Wood, Leslie, Brown, and Purivs leave and we have 3 currently coming in, that’s a net of -2. Even with 2 more added, it’s a wash as far as bodies and they were considered thin this year.

  13. JeremyH 03/28/2013 at 2:39 PM #

huh? Purvis leaving is confirmed where?

  14. BJD95 03/28/2013 at 2:49 PM #

Question the staff if both of the next two seasons go very badly. The bottom line is what we need to worry about, not the path to get there.

We need to learn some lessons from last season. We need whoever is here to be “all in” – I think we are on the way to that now. And I haven’t given up on next season yet. Desmond Lee is pretty much a “must have” to keep that vibe, though.

  15. partialqualifier 03/28/2013 at 2:50 PM #

Not to be crass, but MG is not a “poor man’s John Calipari.” Maybe a rich man’s Pat Kennedy

  16. gopack10 03/28/2013 at 2:51 PM #

“You certainly are obstinate. If the authors of the site feel strongly enough to state it that emphatically they have heard something. Why would they say their “source” as that would cause info to dry up. Either believe it or not but they are not going to tell you the “source””

My bad Rick, I’ll start believe anything and everything that is written on this site’s main page and/or forums. I apologize that it takes some real bit of information, from someone with legitimate credibility, before it changes my mind. I’m not asking for a specific name but both comments thus far about Purvis transferring have come with zero other tidbits of information. I trust BJD’s opinion on these matters more than most because he’s been right about a number of things thus far but that still doesn’t make me “obstinate” that I don’t believe him just yet based on his current comments.

And what is it about you that makes you want to attack others on this site than don’t agree with or listen to everything you say?

  17. ringo 03/28/2013 at 2:58 PM #

    pq,

After 25 years of absolute crap you sure seem critical. Look at the numbers of wins and losses. Record speaks for itself. No need to pontificate on what ifs.

  18. vtpackfan 03/28/2013 at 3:07 PM #

Agree that Lee is a must get. Learning curve could be a bit dicey but Turner having a year to acclimate to the game gives us some wiggle room.
It will be a rebuilding year no matter what. All the minutes lost (especially if Leslie exits), all the productivity. Two seniors backcourt players, a Jr and Sophomore PG and one of the Martin’s added to the backcourt, is a fun load of firepower.
Anya and Washington will have gotten into great physical condition and learned the High/low movements.
If Lee commits this weekend than it is a fantastic recruiting haul.

  19. EasternWakeWolf 03/28/2013 at 3:08 PM #

Some kids seem to have trouble adapting to less playing time after being “the man” in high school for2 or more years. Maybe Purvis is one of them. It’s probably another reason that most of the high school stars have no idea how to play defense since they are all about scoring.

  20. partialqualifier 03/28/2013 at 3:11 PM #

If pointing out obvious observations and facts happen to be critical, so be it. There are some who suggest Lewis may leave because MG is obviously recrutiong over and around him. I was asking an honest question about how can a fan base have any expectations about future seasons when so many guys leave…and not for the NBA. We have all of these wonderful videos of recruits and we are all drooling over them, but if there is real malcontent on this team, who knows which one of these guys will jump ship. I have felt all along that transfers are a more significant indication of where the program is heading than temporary results. I just want to know what others think…

  21. ringo 03/28/2013 at 3:21 PM #

With respect to Lewis, if he expects to go to a team where he is the ONLY PG, he won’t even find that at Atlantic Christian. We MUST have at least 2 PG’s at ALL times. I don’t know why you would not get the best available at ALL times to come, period.

According to your theory it seems we should only have 5 scholarship players at one time. To me, if someone leaves because of an incoming recruit, that’s on them and not coach. Same goes for 2, 3, 4, or 5 positions. Need 2 of each.

You don’t know what was addressed and what was not addressed by the coaches during the season unless you were at practices and team meetings. Were you there? If not you can only evaluate objectively by the record, which is stellar by the way.

Any argument that 48 wins in first 2 years is not stellar? Even a new coach at Duke getting 48 wins in 2 years would be okay. We were coming off laughingstock status. Get real. The belly aching you guys can come up with is ridiculous.

  22. Daniel_Simpson_Day 03/28/2013 at 3:34 PM #

PQ’s concern is reasonable. BJD’s response is also reasonable. As long as the end result is acceptable, the offseason drama is inconsequential. Now the big question is what is going to be acceptable to keep the fan base happy. If the media keeps hyping the program and working everyone into a pie in the sky frenzy, nothing short of going to the final four every other year is going to keep some people happy. Personally, I think in a down year we should still finish at or above .500 in the league. Things are not going to get easier with Pitt, Syr, ND, Louisville and eventually UConn (my own personal opinion, I don’t have a source) entering the ACC.

  23. ILPackfan 03/28/2013 at 3:36 PM #

I’m just counting down the days until we know definitively who the coach is and who’s playing for him. I figure at this rate we should have a good idea by late September.

  24. TheCOWDOG 03/28/2013 at 3:56 PM #

It’s really quite simple, this transfer issue. Before the one and dones, coaches did not recruit over to the extent they are forced to in this era.

I don’t know if I could say that these kids’ egos are more fragile in this time, but I think the fall off the pedestal is a helluva lot farther.

  25. Packzingo 03/28/2013 at 3:56 PM #

LOL on the Atlantic Christian zing! Was that in reference to the Wilson college? If so, I didn’t think anyone remembered the school by its “old school” name! Its now Barton College.
Sorry for the “change up” ……….. new to the site and actually this is my new “go to” location for info and its pretty interesting…..
Keep up the great post for us not in the know!
