NC State Falls to Temple 76-72 In the NCAA Opening Round

A season that began with great promise ended with NC State losing its opening round game in the NCAA tournament 76-72 to the Temple Owls.

The loss came in the typical way that we’ve seen NC State lose all year: not showing up to start the game and leaving itself far too much work to advance in the field of 64.

The favored Wolfpack started the game lethargically, playing poor defense and with a lot of standing around when it had the ball, leading to a 38-22 halftime deficit.  That lead proved to be too large for the Wolfpack to overcome as it staged a solid second half comeback, and as a result, the team that was picked to win the ACC and to make some noise in the national tournament accomplished….nothing.

BUT HEY AT LEAST WE’RE NOT KENTUCKY AMIRITE?

I think it may be just a bit harsh to say we accomplished nothing, although it seems that way based upon preseason expectations. We did take a step toward establishing ourselves on par with the blues; and looking at the big picture, Gott has advanced the program. We still have good reason to be optimistic for the years ahead.

Although I look at Miami, and I keep saying to myself, “That was supposed to be us this year.”

Too much Wizard of Oz on this team. Lion, Scarecrow, Tinman. Lacked courage, brains, and heart at times. Sometimes all at once. For example, today in the first half.

Whoever’s on the roster next year I hope they decide to play defense more consistently.

Too soon, pak … Too soon 🙁

I am disappointed, but ACC semis and NCAAT is ok for an off year. And this team was off, almost all year.

We will see what this group is made of over the next two years. Don’t rush to judgment.

As I said early on, success is usually two steps forward, one step back. And at least we only took that one step, instead of our usual 5 or 6.

  7. pakfanistan 03/22/2013 at 4:27 PM #

    Yeah, sorry 🙁

I don’t deal well with this kind of thing.

I’m going to self medicate with a strong brown ale.

Edit: ^ And bizarro BJD continues….

Just a painful year! I’ll be really intrested to watch Gott’s coching ability and decisions over the next few years. Not concerned yet, but there were several WTF moments this year.

Only glad we played Friday so I could at least enjoy one day of the tournament. I could give a sh*t about the rest of it now.

It was a fitting way for CJ to go out not wanting to foul with 10 sec left on the clock. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT CJ…..

I will miss Lo and RH and that is it.

Disappointed as this season ends, but not entirely discouraged. I think the real verdict on this staff is going to come next year if CJ and Lo leave along with Richard and Scott. It’s definitely going to be a youth movement, but with Gott’s guys. Until we’ve had some results (either good or bad) next season, I’m not ready to pass judgment.

With apologies to TS Eliot…Not with a bang, but with a whimper.

Accomplished nothing might be harsh, yes. But also not completely undeserved considering what this team could have done if they’d had some mental toughness about them.

    I’m with Pak and BJD….

…. way too much good this season to let a ‘narrow’ view of things wash it all away….

I’ll be back after inevitable “wailing and gnashing of teeth ” has run it’s necessary course…..

If you want to make yourself feel better, just imagine yourself in the place of an Arizona State fan tuning in tonight to see if the Sun Devils can make it past the second round of the NIT. That will sure as heck make you count your blessings. #itcouldbeworse

Very disappointing. Especially considering the likely step back next season.

We probably won’t have as good an opportunity for a big season for a few more years now (assuming Brown and Leslie don’t both return). Especially with Louisville, Pitt, Notre Dame, and Syracuse joining the ACC, making the competition at the top that much tougher.

I thought Gott was pretty severely outcoached today.

This is my order of Wolfpack sport priorities from this point on now.

    1) Baseball team
    2) Spring football game
    3) Baseball team
    4) a whole bunch of waiting

“We will see what this group is made of over the next two years. Don’t rush to judgment.”

What group is BJD talking about? The team will more than likely have a near-complete turnover for next season. 4 of the starters will probably be playing basketball overseas for the next two years. The returning freshmen are all good players, but experience isn’t going to be our strong suit next season.

Obviously, defense won’t be, either. And until it becomes as important as slam dunks, 1987 will continue to fade further into oblivion.

    when the regular season ended,
    i predicted we’d play 2 more games.
at least we did better than that.

    Whoa AlphaWolf,

I cannot let you get away with stating that this team has accomplished “nothing”. This team.made it to the big dance and won 24 games. How many wolfpack teams in recent history have done that? I know we are disappointed, but after wandering in the desert for years, it is nice to finally get a cup of water that this team provided.

  23. wolfpackdawg 03/22/2013 at 4:42 PM #

Hopefully the coaching staff can motivate them to play harder & smarter in the 1st half of games next year. Jesus F Christ.

  24. phillypacker 03/22/2013 at 4:42 PM #

Zo is quoted as saying he plans to be back next year. Leslie is addition by subtraction, sorry to say it, but how can you argue? If Zo comes back, you are looking at a great core for next year. Plus a big, thick front court.

  25. pack44fan 03/22/2013 at 4:42 PM #

The disappointment to me is that the team didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to be in the tournament. Next year will be another story with the addition of Pitt, Syracuse, and Louisville to the ACC…It could be brutal. We have some pieces this year, but alot of those players were 1 dimensional. I think everyone’s expectations and the number of minutes that the starters played eventually wore this team down.
