Jeff Goodman (CBS Sports) Reports Troy Is Interested In Bobby Lutz (Updated 11pm – Not Hired)

Update: Troy has hired Western Kentucky assistant Phil Cunningham.  (h/t ColaPack for the link)

Troy will introduce Western Kentucky assistant Phil Cunningham at a news conference on Tuesday.

Multiple sources told CBSSports.com that Cunningham, who has spent last season with the Hilltoppers after working for Rick Stansbury for a dozen years at Mississippi State, has been chosen over N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz.

Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports reported earlier today on Twitter that Bobby Lutz may be in line for the head coaching job at Troy University.  The position came open last week when Don Maestri announced his retirement after the team lost to 68-63 in overtime in the Sun Belt Conference tournament to finish their year at 12-20.  Maestri has exactly 500 wins — he attained that mark the day before when Troy defeated Florida Atlantic 81-79 in overtime.

Earlier, Troy AD John Hartwell told AL.com

“Things are progressing very rapidly and at a very good pace,” Hartwell said in a telephone interview with AL.com Monday afternoon. “I anticipate within the next 24 or 48 hours we’ll have some clarity. Maybe even quicker than that.”

Hartwell has extensive contacts and knows Lutz well from his time at Charlotte.

Hartwell, a former college player at The Citadel who has maintained close basketball ties across the Southeast and the country, said he would head up the search for Troy’s next coach. That search may be close to the end.

It is possible the school will announce its new head coach as early as Tuesday.

We tend to agree with Goodman – Troy couldn’t make a better choice, and if Bobby Lutz does indeed end up at the school, Mark Gottfried and NC State will miss him on the sidelines and in the practice gym.

Having watched the coaches for two seasons, it appears that Gott relies on Lutz’s advice more than any other coach on the bench. Losing Lutz would be huge, but not insurmountable. I wish him well if he decides to eventually leave.

    Roo,

I’ve read your posts for a while now and I have to say I never understand wtf your points are. Nevertheless, it seems you have heard something about our coach and aren’t sure whether it’s true. Do you think it does our school good for you to spout like you know something terrible about our head coach on multiple threads on this site? What are you trying to accomplish? Can’t you act like a man and not a woman and keep your mouth shut until there is something concrete to pontificate on?

I want Dino Guadio!!! If Lutz leaves…

    Dino would be great.

    Roo,

very good to hear you continue to do OK.

This forum is now a broadcast with lots and LOTS of readers. I am sure you are acutely aware of that fact, so to use it to carry on clouded conversations about stuff you may or may NOT know reeks of an attention seeker.

I find nothing useful with the pretentious, clandestine “but it is discussed as “fact” in several insider circles (those fans/donors who have key cellphone numbers of the WPC, Coaches, AD Dept).” It is difficult to have anything but contempt, regardless of what is true or not, for stuff you put out there and the way you choose to put it out there. Perhaps a career in journalism (of course investigative) is for you.

Jeff Goodman does not like NC State and will always try and stir the pot. I have no doubt that Bobby is trying to get a head coaching job but do not believe he is looking at schools like Troy. Lutz is 54 and fired from his last head job so I doubt a lot of schools are beating his door down. He has tremendous respect in the coaching ranks but this does not always flow over to the AD’s.

VCU would not be interested in Lutz. Look at their past coaches, hot young coaches in Capel, Grant and Shaka. They like that style and it suits the school well.

Bzzz is safe at Wake. What a shame as that program has tanked. They were a factor with Dino. Wellman deserves to be canned.

    Ringo and Outwest.
I respect your criticism. I have revised the posts. The information that I declined to post is still out there. I doubt that my edited comments will meet your approval, but I did try.

I am disappointed in this season and wonder WHY…there were three reasons, as I stated…and I THINK that I have the right to be concerned about the one that was SEEMINGLY self inflicted…..I know a LOT of other folks that feel even more strongly about that than I do and they are making comments to other folks.

We each have our own opinion and in the final analysis, the facts will speak for themselves….

I will NOT post anymore on this matter…..maybe it will die a natural death…..and I certainly hope so….

The thing getting lost here is in what context that certain matters or subjects are being raised in.

There are too many posts that are completely unrelated to the subject of the entry. In the instance, Bobby Lutz, is a great example. No one can argue or undervalue the tremendous job he had done in only two years at State. He deserves tons of appreciation and well wishes in any circumstance moving forward. I would be happy for him to be given the opportunity to HC again.

Why is Gotts personal life being discussed here? Request to see if any author is interested so that anyone can get weird on and discuss these things. That the Authors here haven’t lead me to believe that it doesn’t have the traction or substance to justify it on the strong platform SFN has established.

He interviewed for the Va Tech job last year. Just a matter of time IMHO. I bet Wake interviews him after Bzzz is fired a year from now, if he is still on our staff that is. Still though you have to wonder about his chances. I mean, he was fired from Charlotte. Not questioning how valuable he is to us, he certainly is.

Wonder how the VT AD now feels about his decision. Seems Lutz would have been a good fit for that job. I appreciate what he’s done for us and wish him well if he leaves for a HC job.

I am sure when 99% of you either speak to another individual face to face, write or even type(blog) you have a tendency to veer off the subject. Adven can blog any damn thing he wants as long as it is not filthy and stays within the boundry of the name of the topic at hand. It is not to Lutz taking the Troy job but it I feel it is within the park and that should be sufficient.

Posting something that does not meet approval of other posters on here is normal and healthy. It will never be an issue or the reason that one persons post has caused a coach or player to stay or leave and a team to win or lose. In the big fish bowl of life or in this case the big world of Wolfpack Nation we are just a bunch of people with no power except purchase power. No one is going to base their decision of a career on us.
