Jeff Goodman (CBS Sports) Reports Troy Is Interested In Bobby Lutz (Updated 11pm – Not Hired)

Update: Troy has hired Western Kentucky assistant Phil Cunningham.  (h/t ColaPack for the link)

Troy will introduce Western Kentucky assistant Phil Cunningham at a news conference on Tuesday.

Multiple sources told CBSSports.com that Cunningham, who has spent last season with the Hilltoppers after working for Rick Stansbury for a dozen years at Mississippi State, has been chosen over N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz.

Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports reported earlier today on Twitter that Bobby Lutz may be in line for the head coaching job at Troy University.  The position came open last week when Don Maestri announced his retirement after the team lost to 68-63 in overtime in the Sun Belt Conference tournament to finish their year at 12-20.  Maestri has exactly 500 wins — he attained that mark the day before when Troy defeated Florida Atlantic 81-79 in overtime.

Earlier, Troy AD John Hartwell told AL.com

“Things are progressing very rapidly and at a very good pace,” Hartwell said in a telephone interview with AL.com Monday afternoon. “I anticipate within the next 24 or 48 hours we’ll have some clarity. Maybe even quicker than that.”

Hartwell has extensive contacts and knows Lutz well from his time at Charlotte.

Hartwell, a former college player at The Citadel who has maintained close basketball ties across the Southeast and the country, said he would head up the search for Troy’s next coach. That search may be close to the end.

It is possible the school will announce its new head coach as early as Tuesday.

We tend to agree with Goodman – Troy couldn’t make a better choice, and if Bobby Lutz does indeed end up at the school, Mark Gottfried and NC State will miss him on the sidelines and in the practice gym.

I think everybody knows he is a head coach in waiting. He’s not the make or break for State, but he is a tremendous coach who will be missed.

Can’t blame him for taking a head coaching job but it would be a big loss.

Why do you think Farmer was added last year?

Lutz has always been a HC commodity…if…that’s his chosen route once again.!

One of the things that top programs will always have to deal with is their assistant coaches and other key personnel leaving for positions that advance their careers.

How many times in the last few years have we had to worry about losing key cogs in the TOB or Lowe machines? It is a credit to both our AD and HC that we are able to have these people in the program. Should we lose Lutz, let’s all wish him well and support him in his new position. I think he is a good contributor to our program.

On the positive side, let’s go out and find a young aggressive defensive specialist as we have all been discussing.

Don’t wish to see him go but can’t blame him if he does and it’s not like this hasn’t been expected.

Good luck to him if he does, but hope he stays.

  8. JeremyH 03/25/2013 at 9:54 PM #

Yea didn’t he turn down south carolina last year? Maybe he should wait like Bill Cowher does.

Why is Tubby Smith out? I thought he did pretty good..

Hope he stays with Gott & crew, but he’s made no secret about wanting to be a head coach again.

    We’ll see what happens …

Hopefully he will stay a little while longer but we all know he wants another HC gig. Although I’m not sure Troy may have been his primary goal. Maybe he is leaving because Gott is bolting to the West Coast? Just kidding…..

This is how this stupid stuff starts…..

    Somebody’s grandma posted on PP…..

“..LA coaching job may be of interest’ to Lotz.”

And some of ya’ll start tracking tail numbers…..

nevermind….there ain’t no airport in Lower Alabama …

    THIS ain’t going to happen….

On the Coach’s final radio show, he alluded to the fact that offers would be (were?) coming and that changes could be made.

Colapack beat me to it but…Sounds like Troy hired some assistant from Western Kentucky

    Bobby Lutz is safe…for now…

Interestingly enough it says this new guy was chosen “over” Bobby Lutz…and then they proceed to highlight his recruiting credentials…

Thanks guys…I updated the article and gave the hat tip to Cola for posting the link first.

Why is the father from Roseanne reporting sports news?

  18. Alpha Wolf 03/25/2013 at 11:25 PM #

    Is that John Goodman?

  19. WeAreCured 03/25/2013 at 11:26 PM #

“He also made some interesting comments that add credibility to other things that seem to be lurking around and were considered pure “net” rumors.”

Come on, sir… I suppose until the man is actually caught with his pants down, the innuendo will continue… unfortunately.

  20. BJD95 03/26/2013 at 7:54 AM #

    JOHN Goodman. Mark it zero!

  21. TopTenPack 03/26/2013 at 8:57 AM #

Bobby Lutz leaving worries me more than Gottfried leaving. I hope both come back next year.

  22. Texpack 03/26/2013 at 9:05 AM #

Lutz promised Gott two years when he signed on. I always feels good for people who work for me that find a much better opportunity somewhere else, even when I hate to see them go. That’s how I feel about Lutz. By all accounts he’s been a major plus for our program. You have to hope we can keep him, but I don’t think that’s realistic given his reputation as a coach. He’ll be a good hire for somebody.

  23. JasonP 03/26/2013 at 9:10 AM #

Any word on Bzdelik at WF? I know Lutz will be gone at some point, but would hate to see him go to Wake. Should Shaka jump somewhere it wouldn’t surprise me if VCU pursued Lutz either.

    WeAreCured…..

As to the comment….there are two NET rumors. Both similar themes. One is really bizarre and would be ugly. That, from all outward appearances of the individuals involved and their tweeting and retweeting of comments is just THAT….a vicious rumor. That was the “biggie” and the most salicious…that was also the one that AD Yow “took care of”. One DOES have to wonder if it was just a rumor on a rival fan board WHY she took such strong steps…and why she COULD take care of it…..so maybe she killed two birds with one stone….I hope so and only time will tell on either.

I WILL say that personal issues impeded Sidney in his second and third years. That is public knowledge and was posted and discussed here in several articles and in the newspaper. That is NOT beauty shop gossip.

It bothers me that coaches have issues, which MAY or MAY NOT be in their control, but impact their ability to focus on their job……

We, as State Fans pay for tickets and support the team through donations to the WPC. I have 6 LTRs (2 FB and 4 BB – Lenovo CC) so my AMEX feels the pain.

I can understand some situations….but some are self inflicted…..and THAT is what bothers me, as well as several OTHER folks who pay a bigger tow than I do.

IF and I say IF, there were personal issues this year, the I expect them to be resolved or put into a “NON-Job Interference” Category. I am STILL a supporter of Coach G as I have been and wish him the best IF there are some OFF COURT issues that need to be addressed.

I want the team to win and I want to be PROUD of State. I can tell you with CLEAR CONSCIENCE that a LOT of folks in higher circles are UPSET about some things…..and have voiced their opinions..their AMEX get hit a LOT harder than mine and it also impacts the corporate donations….When Sidney was NOT winning, the money started to dry up and attendance sufffered.

Hopefully, It HAS been taken care of and there will be NO PERSONAL issues NEXT YEAR….

I think that this season was OVERHYPED….I also think that there were Chemistry ISSUES on the floor and in the locker room…..and IF there were OTHER OFF COURT issues, then they need to be addressed and we need to be focused on winning and maintaining the reputation of the school.

My posts were NOT intended to gossip….and I have known, as others have, about the situatiosn for several months..I truly regret commenting as it seems to upset some….but others say that we need to be fully aware of what is or may be going on…..When fans with minor connections to our program ask me about them and I try to debunk them….only to find out that there is some basis for them….I am upset.

I have edited both of these posts….
