Going Pro (Third Update 10:30pm – Leslie, Brown and Warren Say They’re Undecided)

10:30pm Update: Joe Giglio says Brown, Warren still undecided on NBA future

Kim Banks, Brown’s mom, said she would be in Raleigh this week to talk to her son about his future. She also refuted the CBS report.

“I’ve seen the rumors,” Banks said. “I don’t know where they get that from. He hasn’t made a decision yet.”

Leslie, who almost left for the NBA last April, also seemed to deny the report on his Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon.

“Who said I was leaving,” Leslie tweeted.

Regarding Warren Giglio Added:

“If he’s a first-round pick, I think it would be a good decision,” said Warren, a former Wolfpack player who was an eighth-round pick of the Chicago Bulls in 1979.

But Warren also said he felt his son could be a lottery pick next year after a big sophomore season as the centerpiece of N.C. State’s offense.

“It’s too early to tell,” Warren said. “I want to see what he wants to do. It’s up to him but he knows he can play at the next level.”

**Update** CJ Leslie tweets “Who said I was leaving?”

This confirms to me that no one outside of maybe Coach and the team knows what is going on 100% of the time.

Well that didn’t take long…

For anyone interested, Draft Express has Zo listed as the #29th pick, CJ projected as the #35th pick and Richard Howell projected as the #57th pick. I fully expect these guys to improve their draft status at the NBA camps/workouts before the draft b/c they are both freakishly talented. It is tough to say we’ll be better off when losing 2 5-star elite-level talent guys but next year will really test Gottfried’s coaching as we’ll probably be starting ZERO upperclassmen.

As a side note, I’m hoping Scott Wood gets a shot, literally.  His height and shooting skills might lure a team into giving him a shot and usually all Wood needs is a shot.

It was bad. Gott said it was bad. Wood said it was bad. It was bad.

  2. ringo 03/26/2013 at 8:48 PM #

What was bad? What is “it”. Can I see a quote? The basketball was bad, agreed. The loafing was bad, yep. What else? Warren did better after starting, so that seems like problem corrected. What else you got? Specifically.

  3. choppack1 03/26/2013 at 8:59 PM #

Wolfpack… it probably was… but when a team underachieves it usually is.

Coach has to manage a bunch of alpha dogs. What kills morale of my is if there is no negative impact for causing problems…and if it was anyone causing problems logging serious minutes…

  4. ringo 03/26/2013 at 9:05 PM #

all speculation and rumor based on nothing but the team underachieving

  5. Wulfpack 03/26/2013 at 9:21 PM #

Here you go, ringo. Reiterated last night by both Gott and Wood on the radio.

Going around on Twitter. UCLA boosters want Gott, and he wants them: http://zagsblog.com/articles/source-ucla-boosters-want-mark-gottfried/ Complete with scurrilous gossip in the comments.

If Gott goes does that make it more or less likely we hold onto 1.CJL, 2. Zo Brown, 3. New recruits?

  7. Alpha Wolf 03/26/2013 at 10:29 PM #

There’s a lot of unattributed supposition in that article. What boosters? And any quotes from Gottfried or a named source close to him?

Then there’s the usual “they’re living in the past” and “Gott is messing around on his wife” comments with supposedly Wolfpack-related screen names but somehow I suspect are other fanbases’ trolls doing what they do best…making crap up and trying to sound as if they know what they are talking about.

But…if Gottfried leaves, then it is time to rebuild, and with a new coach. I trust Yow to make the right hire, as she did two years ago. It’s not like we’re a shabby compass direction commuter school located in a crappy conference with no hoops tradition.

  8. ringo 03/26/2013 at 10:46 PM #

    Wulf,

I read that as defense and doing what the coaches say. I don’t really understand how else to read that. Not buying in = not committed to team success, ie not running the offense, not playing defense, loafing, etc….things we see on the court. I don’t believe anyone is airing off court grievances to the news media.

That article in zagblog is hilarious

  9. TLeo 03/27/2013 at 6:43 AM #

That stupid blog is just that……stupid. Just some talking head throwing out anonymous source crap just to make it seem he has some important inside info nobody else has.
By the way, I just noticed the twitter quote from some sports bimbo quoting Shaka about our job being open end of last year. I am sick of all these so called reporters, etc passing off all their rumor as factual, and true info.

2 years into this “turnaround” and we’re now talking about our “savior” coach jumping ship and one of our highly recruited freshman thinking of going to the NBA????? Appreciate it, I’d kill to go back to the 80’s when competing in college and learning a sense of pride for your school meant something to these student athletes. Back then, and before, kids were PROUD to put on the red/white, carolina blue..ect. They fought their asses off to compete and wanted to be where they were. Now I know why so many flock to Walmart and pick up some Carolina blue gear and call themselves UNC fans. So much easier and a lot less painful

Gott will be here and so will the process of building up this program to prominence.

I don’t look at early draft entries as a make or break circumstance to a program gaining traction. It’s an opportunity to showcase that that the program can keep moving full steam ahead.

Look at this as a possible (or VT’s) rebuilding/reloading 2013 team.

Guards: Lewis; Purvis; Barber; Lee (official visit this weekend).

Wings: Turner; Washington, (Purvis/Lee for a smaller or as needed componet)

High/Low Frontcourt: Anya; Washington; Josh Davis (potential grab Post Grad (We will be highly interested and he will get that knowledge before his decision-we will transfer for his last year); JV.

I just signed up to this site, because I wanted everyone to know that coach Gottfried is not as popular of a choice in Bruin Nation as being reported. If you go to Bruins Nation and do a little reading, it appears he is not a popular choice. Here is a sample of what I found.

I will end this update on a funny note. Yesterday, I linked up a funny story from the OC Register in which Lorenzo Romar’s name was floated in connection with this search process. Romar is waiting for a phone call! Today it’s Mart Gottfried’s turn. Read this amusing post from Zagsblog which suggests “UCLA boosters want Mark Gottfried.” Yes, UCLA boosters are really fired up about a coach who hasn’t won a conference title in 15 years (when he coached at Murray State) and had to resign from Alabama. Yes, Gottfried will really fill up those blue seats facing the cameras inside Pauley. LOL

  13. Wolfpackforlife 03/27/2013 at 10:12 AM #

    Another read:

Now beyond this Final-4, it’s unclear who are UCLA’s fall back options. What do we know is what we don’t want clowns like Lorenzo Romar in the mix. Although hilariously and pathetically Romar is sending signals via the traditional media trying to position himself for a phone call. Similarly Mark Gottfried would be a pretty uninspiring choice. Also, pathetic would be retreads from the NBA – such as guys like Kurt Rambis or Mike Brown (LOLOL). None of these guys would get anyone excited about paying up $$ to watch games at the OPUG.

I’m hoping all three return, that CJ and Lo get degrees and we have no transfers or coaching losses, we land the juco guard, and build some depth.

Any negativity under the prenise of “keeping it real” is counterproductive. Period.

  15. vtpackfan 03/27/2013 at 10:51 AM #

I agree that guys coming back to get a chance to compete in ACC basketball and getting a diploma is too notch scenario. I’m misunderstanding the keeping it real part.

  16. tjfoose1 03/27/2013 at 11:03 AM #

For those wondering, Josh Davis, Athens Drive product and former Wolfpacker who majored in hustle, was a Conference USA POY candidate (did not win). He lead the conference in rebounding (10.7/game) and was 3rd in scoring (17.6/game).

He did make first team All Conference.

  17. Gene 03/27/2013 at 11:24 AM #

“Both cj and McAdoo and probably zo lost a lot by not leaving last year vs. This year.”

The rookie contract is good money by everday standards, but the big money is in the second contract.

It can be worth getting the skills needed to make sure you last long enough to get a good second contract.

  18. vtpackfan 03/27/2013 at 11:25 AM #

    ^ tf

He is the best Post Grad prospect out there-you’re on board.

State couldn’t come close in reeling in anyone better fit that could tip the scale from rebuilding towards reloading by choosing out of JuCo or HS ranks.

IMO you kill two birds with one stone: CJ’s energy and Howells tenacious work on the glass.

It’s a long shot-better odds then out of possible range since he grew up a local Wolfpack fan (family friends sorround).

One has to ask objectively: Would some of the names coming back be consumed with with Draft status next year, and if so, how would that compare to inserting a player like Josh in order to take the next step in program rebuilding.

  19. Rochester 03/27/2013 at 11:52 AM #

Where did the Josh Davis talk come from? Is this pure dreamwork and speculation or has there been some actual indication that he is interested in returning? I’d love it if he did, but I’d love a lot of things that are never going to happen.

  20. Daniel_Simpson_Day 03/27/2013 at 12:35 PM #

@ Rochester, I read on PP that Kate Upton is coming to my house tonight for oysters and chocolate. I’m so excited! I read it on the internet; they can’t put anything on the internet that isn’t true. Bon Jour.

  21. sjmac11 03/27/2013 at 1:17 PM #

    opinion, and what is prenise?

  22. vtpackfan 03/27/2013 at 2:17 PM #

He has stated he’s planning on leaving after he graduates from Tulane in Spring. You CAN’T have anything but speculation on the Post Grad transfers-it’s tampering, lands you out of the mix and gets a secondary violation at minimum. It has to be under wraps until it comes out a done deal.

The ACC next year is a great opportunity and proving ground for Josh. Any combination of TJW/Calvin leaving sets him up for major playing time.

Also, very easy to find Grad programs offered at NCSU that aren’t at Tulane (a required condition).

Cap it off- he’s a die hard Wolfpack fan. He didn’t leave upset. He only saw that CJ Leslie was coming in as Lowes savior and Woods freshman year and all the plays called for him made for very little opportunity

  23. doug 03/27/2013 at 5:52 PM #

I think they could all move to first round maybe lottery with one more year. I think CJ is gone though and probably LO whichever I hope t works out for them.

  24. TLeo 03/27/2013 at 9:01 PM #

Well, for whatever it’s worth the other board is reporting that Brown made the decision today to go pro and was announced by his mom. If true, I say good luck to him and I will also look forward to watching Tyler Lewis run the point next year.

Can’t we do this the old fashion way? Back in my day you would just find out if the kids are still going to class. Lifestyle changes? Someone has to know. These are kids. Tough for them to stuff like this and still be on campus.
